January 4, 2023: today’s #prompt is again from @rachelastorauthor’s @dailyom program, WRITING TO UNCOVER THE #AUTHENTIC #SELF and it asks, “Have you ever used an "obstacle" as an excuse not to get started? Did you regret it?”
I’ve sadly used #obstacles as an excuse to not get started on #creative endeavours. My unorganized #mess has lived with me for just over a decade now. I would get going on #cleaning it up in-between #semesters & I’d keep going into the start of a new one, thinking I can delay #homework a bit if it means I get things organized again. But then I #underestimate how much work is needed to #cleanup, & I fall behind. I get #depressed, & even physically ill, & I fell behind with the cleaning again. Rinse, wash, repeat. Rinse, wash, repeat.
I often refer to the last twelve years of my life as a #lost decade, one that saw a significant long term #relationship & job that I loved come to end. It also marked a time when I decided to work on completing my BFA through @kwantlenu’s @kpufinearts department. And finally, it also saw me grapple with the worst #health crisis my Mum ever endured in her own life, which culminated in her having triple #bypasssurgery. I do devote a lot of time to taking my Mum to appointments, & to go shopping. I also help in her #yard, which helps me exercise, although as I’ve documented here, that’s yet another area I’ve fallen behind in.
And all of the above has impacted my ability to lead a more creative life of #writing, creating #visualart, as well as more fully exploring my interests in #spirituality or #neohumanism - my desire to #cultivate #unconditional #compassion, #curiosity, #empathy (can authentic empathy ever really be conditional though?), forgiveness, gratitude, love, & reverence for all life, human & nonhuman across the universe, starting with myself.
I shot today’s photo with my SONY ZV-1 digital camera sitting at an odd angle, & through the #foggy plastic #lid of a @BostonPizzaCanada #takeout #container. I found myself up late again this morning, thanks to my insomnia, & ended up in the kitchen eating chips while reading about photography.
This is my 4th photo in my subversive selfie project for 2023.

Yeah, it's back in Sarasota. 'It' being J. Seward Johnson's 25-foot-tall statue depicting the kiss in Times Square taken by the late Alfred Eisenstaedt on August 14, 1945 (VJ Day). I guess this was on display in Times Square as part of some 60th anniversary of the end of WWII celebration. It left New York and spent some time in Sarasota in 2005, apparently. Then it went to San Diego, where I first saw it while attending Comic-Con in 2007. Now it's back. A massive PDA. In this scale you pretty much can't help looking up her skirt. It always seems like a work that should be part of a miniature golf course or something.
The D700 is a remarkable camera, BTW. A much better tool than I am a tradesman. But in a way that everyone kind of deserves to have when they take a photograph. That roll of Ektachrome when you'd been used to Kodacolor kind of thing. It becomes an invisible friend that makes you feel more affectionate towards the way your camera saw the light. Hard to go back to Kodacolor after that, you know? Chips and pipelines like this will be all over the place before you know it, though.
Tonight I shot in really contrasty lighting at night. I wasn't overjoyed with what I got, but it was OK. I didn't look at it and sigh. Or at least not because of the way the camera saw the light I presented to it. Nikon may have used toying around with creatively clipping the blacks or any other number of things to make the D700 more forgiving in terms of apparent latitude and ISO response. I honestly don't know. It may be a terrible technical camera for your precision industrial or astrophotographic needs, but as something to shoot non-precision photographs it's got a way of rendering images that seems very pleasant to me.
Things seem to be much less electronic/video-y in the way contrast transitions are handled. I'm sure the curves I'm using are responsible, too. Overall the "unprocessed" RAW images are the least offensive aesthetically that I've dealt with. I don't have any idea how it is to work with digital medium format or scanning backs, though.

Our oldest pup Tuffy. We nursed him through Cancer 2 years ago, but his age is catching up with him and he has gone into kidney failure. We have weeks with him at the most. Being in the animal ER with him I was amazed at the number of grown men crying; it was sad, I was crying, but it's not often you see so many men showing their emotion so freely. The bond a man and his dog have is remarkable. Love you Tuffy.
Unconditional Surrender is a series of sculptures by Seward Johnson resembling a photograph by Alfred Eisenstaedt, V–J day in Times Square, but said by Johnson to be based on a similar, less well known, photograph by Victor Jorgensen.

The image is "Unconditional Surrender" by J. Seward Johnson this big statue (26 ft. tall) is big news in this town. Here's a link to a news story www.baynews9.com/content/36/2005/12/25/135738.html and a link to the artist's website www.sewardjohnson.com/
So much of art is sitting in a museum somewhere or on someone's wall where most of us might get to see it someday. Well here's a piece that's right out there where everybody can love it or hate it. Considering most of SRQ are retirees who remember what this image stands for I think its a good thing that it's paying us a visit (who knows I here there's a movement afoot to keep it here for good.) I'm sure there will be more talk and action on what is to be done with this work. Stay tuned!

Motherly love is unconditional!
My comment:
The civilised world can't forgive and forget this indescribable cowardly multiple murderous acts against innocent children from same ethnicity, culture, religion & language as this boy who planned this for months -not a spur of the moment accident, it was a wilful & deliberate evil mass shooting aimed at getting him the attention he craved for!
He shot his elderly grandmother in the face, he meant to kill her so that she wouldn't stand in his way for what he had planned & rehearsed to do even after reaching out to significant online followers on social media
His own sister refused to buy him a gun a year prior to the shooting, this was on his mind for sometime
Obviously this boy had no "love" for anyone or for himself: he wanted to end his life in a blaze of glory in a shoot out with police but not before he killed kids & teachers for no apparent reason {they were his own people! no racism involved there -no blacks or whites were targeted} -pretty much a murder-suicide in disguise
There's no reason to forgive or forget his actions

I am surrendering my heart to the Knight of Faith.
When I say “surrender” I do not mean a form of resignation like that of Nietzsche’s ascetic ideal.
But I need to be uplifted from these exhausted, broken shards of what I thought was everything I wanted to be.
I don’t have an elaborate plan of what I strive to be in this currently bold chapter in my life, so naturally, I am terrified.
I just want to know that I can have faith in something.
And that this faith won’t give up on me.
Unconditional Faith, please?

Shaun, 54, and Sharon Owens, 55, have been married for 28 years. They say the key to their longevity is their Christian faith. Shaun has lived in the city his entire life, while Sharon moved to the city in 1981 to start college at Syracuse University. Their anniversary is July 7.
