Feminism has many different avatars. On one hand, you have the fiery Frida Kahlo, who openly rebelled against the patriarchy, and adopted bold measures like having an open marriage and painting graphic images of women. On the other hand, you have the relatively quieter American artist Mary Cassatt, who persistently fought against male dominance in her own style.
And this difference is not more evident in any place than in the art of these two incredibly talented women. We’ve already discussed Kahlo’s style previously and today, we’re going to look at Cassatt’s impressionist art that was just as effective in promoting the case for equal rights for the sexes.
Cassatt’s work is very distinct – they feature women in all spheres of life. Of course, most of them are from scenes she observed personally, but the beauty of her art is that generations later, women across the world can still relate to what she painted. Her work features women socializing, reading, playing cards, having tea and so on, but her most popular works are based on mothers.
And these aren’t pictures of firebrand mothers who fought a war – they’re images of mothers and children in everyday life, bathing, comforting, nursing and more. Children will find these very relatable, and they’ll love realizing that throughout time and in all lands, mothers and children have always shared a special bond. SUV crash test ratings for 2018 models (and one 2019 model) shows two of the most popular SUVs have problems with a certain type of frontal crash.
Out of eight SUVs tested, all were model year 2018 except the 2019 Kia Sorento, and all were put through the challenging passenger-side small overlap crash test. The test consists of the front corner slamming into a stationary object, such as a tree or utility pole, as the SUV travels 40 mph.
IIHS says some of the SUVs did well, but others showed serious problems with seat belts, airbags and structural strength, leaving front passengers at risk of injuries.
Three SUVs earned "good" ratings, the top classification out of "good," "acceptable," "marginal" and "poor."
Those three SUVs include the 2018 GMC Acadia, 2019 Kia Sorento and 2018 Volkswagen Atlas, with the Sorento the only SUV to earn a Top Safety Pick+ award when the SUV is equipped with optional front crash prevention and specific headlights.
Researchers say the 2019 Sorento structure suffered maximum intrusion of four inches on the right side of the toe pan. Overall, the structure held up well and the head of the test dummy was well-controlled.
The GMC Acadia did well also with maximum intrusion of only two inches on the right side of the toe pan. However, the head of the dummy slid off to the right side of the frontal airbag. An incident in real-life could cause a passenger's head to strike the structure.
The head of a Honda Pilot passenger could also suffer injuries based on results of the crash test, as researchers determined the head slid off the airbag and hit the dashboard. But IIHS says the SUV still earned an "acceptable" rating due to structural integrity, with the Nissan Pathfinder and Toyota Highlander also earning acceptable ratings.
Bringing up the rear in "poor" passenger-side small overlap crash ratings is the Ford Explorer and Jeep Grand Cherokee.
The 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee suffered 10 inches of intrusion at the lower door hinge pillar and the dummy's head traveled through the frontal airbag and smashed into the dashboard. The head reached the dashboard because the side curtain airbag failed to deploy during the test.
Then there was the little issue with the door that opened during the test, allowing the dummy's head to move outside the SUV. According to data from the dummy, a human would have likely suffered from injuries to the head and right leg.
The 2018 Ford Explorer also rates "poor" in the small overlap test because of structural issues that allowed intrusion up to 15 inches at the lower door hinge pillar and 13 inches at the upper door hinge pillar and the dashboard.
IIHS says the door sill was pushed in six inches toward the dummy and data shows a high likelyhood of injuries to the right hip and possible left lower leg injuries.
Ford says it is redesigning the Explorer based on the results of passenger-side tests, in addition to the "marginal" ratings for past tests for driver-side small overlap protection.

Thousands of fans are gathered in Riviera Maya, Mexico this week to celebrate the inaugural Deja Voom festival thrown by Bassnectar. With a beautiful ocean backdrop and 5-star resort as the festival setting, it seems like paradise. However, there’s a darker side to the story.
The resort the festival is held at, Barceló Maya Beach, also features an attraction wherein guests can view dolphins in captivity for free, or pay to ride them and interact with them within the enclosure. Although the company that runs the attraction, Dolphinaris, claims to have achieved certification through the global American Humane Conservation program for “the welfare and humane treatment of the animals under its care,” animal rights activists and resort attendees have condemned the facility for their treatment of the animals.
Dolphinaris has five locations on the Yucatan peninsula, all within 114 miles of each other: Cancún, Cozumel, Riviera Maya, Tulum, and Barceló. Though no explicit information is publicly available about the size of the Barceló enclosure, it stands to reason that it is similar in size to the others.
This blog post describing the conditions at the Tulum site puts the depth of the enclosure anywhere between 3-5 meters deep. The familiar bottlenose dolphin grows to approximately 2.5 meters long, which if the minimum depth is true is akin to explicit animal torture. Even at the maximum depth estimated, it’s still clearly animal cruelty with hardly enough space to move. Photos from Trip Advisor for the Barceló location appear that the enclosure is perhaps even smaller than the one at Tulum.
Note: the size of enclosures does vary from location to location.
Furthermore, dolphins held in shallow enclosures like this with very little protection from the sun can actually become sunburnt, and appear a darker color because of it.
A sixth Dolphinaris location was open in Arizona until just last month, when it closed after its fourth dolphin died in a span of two years. ANIMALS 24-7, a nonprofit online newspaper and information service covering the humane community worldwide, alleges that as many as nine dolphins have died at Dolphinaris locations altogether in the same time span (May 22, 2018 thru January 31, 2019).
“We recognize losing four dolphins over the last year and a half is abnormal,” Dolphinaris general manager Christian Schaeffer said in a statement. “We will be taking proactive measures to increase our collaborative efforts to further ensure our dolphins’ well-being and high quality of life.”
ANIMALS 24-7 reports Dolphinaris Arizona was closed “temporarily,” ostensibly for an expert review of the facilities, on February 8, 2019. Signage identifying the buildings was taken down on February 15, 2019.
Dolphinaris likes to use promotional materials claiming they are helping the environment, like this blog post about cleaning beaches in Cancun and Riviera Maya from 2017.
“Dolphinaris has always been committed to the conservation of marine environments,” the post reads.
However, the continued confinement of such intelligent creatures is entirely at adds with that commitment.
This outrage isn’t just coming from animal rights activists, but also from those within the Bassnectar fandom and EDM in general, as well.

Hey guys! Man. THANK YOU so much for the overwhelming response on the reveal of the Small World room yesterday! (If you haven’t seen it yet check it out here!)
You know I try to post tutorials for everything that I do but friends, a tutorial for this wall treatment just isn’t happening. Not because I don’t think that you can do it, but because I think you TOTALLY CAN!! Let me explain.
This room started off as a rough (and I mean rough) sketch. There were no measurements or angles or exactness. I knew the general size and the general shape and that was good enough for me. (Court was a little concerned when I pulled out my drawing)
I started off by measuring and marking the size for each building on the wall with tape. Then we got to work ripping pieces of 1/2″ plywood down and started attaching them to the wall (just make sure when you’re doing this that you’re hitting at least one stud!)
I also used 1×2’s to add detail and dimension. If you’ve ever seen Small World you know that dimension is of most critical importance, everything got layers.
Once the build out was done it was time to pull it all together. This is where I hit a creative roadblock (if you follow my instastories you were a part of this emotional and frustrating part!)
The detail was pretty much done and it was time to start adding wallpaper and paint. The biggest issue that I kept running into is that it was going very juvenile really quickly. I know how that sounds. This is a kids room, I’m using It’s A Small World as inspo. DUH of course its juvenile. But the dilemma is that my daughter is 9 and so I wanted the room to feel more old kid and not nursery. A good dose of whimsical and modern.
I started painting and almost immediately hated it. See I get this feeling in my gut and I know if I’m on the right track or not. It was just too busy with the wood and the wallpaper (even though the paper is white) and the patterns. Again, I know how this sounds. How is it not supposed to be busy?! It just felt like mixing the shapes and the colors and the elevations was just too much.
Oh and did I mention that one of the best things about this type of work is having hard deadlines, and I had to have this room ready for pictures the next day. Not a problem.
So I did what any rational person that hated what was happening would do. I started painting over everything. As I was doing this I was feeling SO conflicted. I love the natural wood, but with the floors and the dresser and the whole vibe I was going for they couldn’t stay natural.
After I had painted everything white I was so gut sick. It just wasn’t working! And now I couldn’t go back (plywood doesn’t sand well). I needed to take a break and walk away from the situation.
Have you ever listened to Elizabeth Gilbert’s TED talk about creative genius? It’s SO AWESOME. Go listen to it right now! For me, creativity is spiritual. Not in a religious sort of way, but in a there-is-something-bigger-that-endows-me-with-ideas sort of way. So I left the Merc, parked my car and started to meditate and pray. It was after about 30 minutes of wrestling with my genius (have you listen to the talk yet?!) that I got the distinct impression that I needed to think bigger than the buildings. When I think of my daughter I see her potenitial as such a light. She literally radiates. So I was picturing her sitting in her bed and the idea of doing these rainbow beams came to my mind, because that is just who she is. As soon as I saw it I knew it was exactly what the space needed.
I started measuring and marking the stripes by using masonry line and nails. (You can see the pink masonry line in the picture below, see how it all meets at one central point?)
Then I got to painting. I used sample pots (if youre doing an accent wall with sections of color, 9 times out of 10 you can get away with testers and don’t need to buy full size cans.) It will save you so much money!!
And then voila! we ended up with this!

Sanjay Dutt has openly spoken about his drug addiction and how he managed to come out of it. He has also been a heavy drinker but earlier this year; it was revealed that he has stopped consuming alcohol as well. However, smoking is something that Sanjay Dutt has not been able to free himself from.
Recently, Sanjay Dutt shared an interesting anecdote with regards to his smoking habit. He said his father, late actor-politician Sunil Dutt, had beaten him up. The strict father had caught Sanjay smoking in the bathroom. He took Sanjay Dutt inside a room and thrashed him. Remembering this incident, the actor admitted that he needs to stop smoking and that he’ll attempt to kick the butt soon.
Sanjay Dutt then opened up that his father made sure that his sisters Priya Dutt and Namrata Dutt were treated equally at home and it’s a quality that he has also imbibed. The actor was in prison from May 2013 to February 2016 and said that if he learnt that a fellow prisoner was a rapist, he would not talk to him. He justified that women are symbols of Goddess Durga and Laxmi. We pray to them and still it’s bewildering for him that how anyone can violate them.
It’s this point of view of Sanjay Dutt to perhaps drive him to sign his comeback film Bhoomi, which releases on September 22. It deals with a father’s struggle after his daughter is exploited by a ruthless criminal. Sanjay admitted that he was more than happy to be a part of this film that gives a nice message.
Aditi Rao Hydari plays Sanjay Dutt’s daughter in Bhoomi. In real life, he is a father to Trishala and also twins, Iqra and Shahraan. He says that he isn’t strict disciplinarian but he has one complaint. He fails to understand why his children wish to have stayovers with their friends at their houses. He reasons that the children have the duration of the entire day to bond with their friends. Then why do they want to spend nights together and this is something he detests to the core.

Counter Culture Coffee’s Seattle Training Center is the sort of space you might stumble upon by chance. Located in a narrow storefront on 1st Street in the city’s Pioneer Square, its two-C logo affixed to the building’s facade just looks like it belongs. Has it always been here?
It hasn’t, but Counter Culture’s Seattle “TC”, as it’s colloquially referred to, has been in the making since 2016. The independently owned Durham, North Carolina-based company entered the market in the city with one customer—the diminutive Anchored Ship cafe in Ballard—but grew exponentially when hometown favorite Cherry Street Public House picked them up as a supplier that same year. Counter Culture cut the ribbon on its new space in mid-April. Seattle regional manager Amanda Byron explains that the company wanted to have a unique launch event, not just another coffee party.

“It wasn’t just an open house,” Byron says of what will surely be the first of many special events at the training space. “The idea was that we would do a book launch for A Reference Guide to Ethiopian Coffee Varieties.”
The book, written by Counter Culture’s Getu Bekele and Timothy Hill, is exactly what it sounds like, and sets out, according to its introduction, “to provide a more complete picture of the unique coffee varieties found in Ethiopia and showcase the work researchers have been doing in the country for over 40 years to make Ethiopian coffee more disease-resistant and better tasting.” Sounds like a lot to bite off? It would be, perhaps, for a roaster with less depth of knowledge in the field. The opening also featured Jeff Koehler, who wrote Where the Wild Coffee Grows, and showcased a limited-release single-farmer-lot coffee from Jose Sebastian Rodriguez in Colombia to commemorate the occasion.
Before opening their own space, Counter Culture’s Seattle operations were run out of the La Marzocco showroom in nearby Ballard. But having a facility fully their own is key to the Counter Culture model, says Byron.
“There are four corners to a complete region—education, sales account management, tech support, and a training center,” she explains. “We could’ve existed at La Marzocco for quite a while, but it never would’ve been our space.”
Operating in lockstep with other TCs, the Pioneer Square space features a Mazzer ZM, La Marzocco Strada and Linea PB machines, and a Marco Mix system.
“With each new training center,” Byron says, “you’ll see slightly different equipment, depending on what’s new at the time of its opening. But what we’re really doing in each is creating spaces that are easy to use, functional, and welcoming.”
That means the company’s popular Tasting at Ten series will continue in Seattle, and Counter Culture’s customers will of course have access to the space for trainings. Current partnerships include all of Cherry Street’s cafes, two General Porpoise locations, the Miir flagship, 5 Stones Coffee Company in Redmond, and James Beard Award-winning Seattle institution Canlis, which serves exclusive off-menu coffees whenever possible.
Tasting at Ten
“I’m interested in how [the new center] impacts our ability to expand in Seattle,” Byron says. “We have a support model like nobody else does, and I think that a lot of places here don’t yet know it exists. My hope is to get people in here to see this.”
Whether they’re invited in or just happen to be walking by, her hope seems a reasonable one.

But he’s matching that tough talk with generous spirit, imploring parents not to skimp. Lieber says to establish a set budget for things as important as clothing, then let your kids decide how to spend it (and likely fail to cover their bases.) If they spent the funds unwisely, don’t bail them out; this is their chance to learn how to manage their finances before the consequences are more severe.

Deadmau5 is a huge fan of automobiles. In fact, we had a chance to talk to him about his P1 hypercar when he ordered it back in 2014. During his trip to E3, Electronic Entertainment Expo, Deadmau5 managed to spend some time with the Senna. Why was the Senna at a video game expo? Because it’s one of the two cover cars on the new “Forza Horizon 4” video game. Also, peep that PUBG hat.
