The University of Texas did win a National Championship this year; just not in football or basketball but in swimming and diving. Other sports still TBD.

February 9 1973 the second snow event that winter at the University of Texas. Much of the snow had already melted by the time I took this photo looking east from the top of the private Castilian dormitory at 237 feet (72m) above the ground. The UT tower is 307 feet (94 meters) tall and was completed in 1937.

We have a slight chance for more freezing precipitation in Austin late this week, which might be our third event of 2013.

The University of Texas at Austin from 2000 feet

When I returned home on Friday after Fun Fun Fun Fest, I happened to look out the north-facing windows of our condo (unit 2010 in the 360 Condominiums building) and noticed that the top of the The University of Texas Tower was lit orange. When the tower is illuminated with orange lighting, it typically signals a UT sports win or some other celebratory event. In this case, it was lighted orange in honor of a Texas Longhorns football win (59 to 20) against Kansas. (Apologies for the poor/grainy quality of this pic; my iPhone doesn't take very clear nighttime or zoom photos...)

Dan Dietz, a playwright, actor and former student at the University of Texas at Austin, sits atop a stairwell in the University's clocktower. Dietz is a resident company member of Austin's Salvage Vanguard Theater and has received the Austin Critics Table Award for Best New Play.

The same tower, as in the previous image, but zoomed in to take just the top, which was lit burnt orange (supposed to be)

The tower has quite an amazing lighting scheme which brings out the details quite beautifully. On special days, the tower is lit burnt orange - the official "color" of UT Austin. When the longhorns win against a rival team (in football), the just the top is lit red. The beginning and the end of semester see it in full burnt orange color, with the year inscribed in the window lights below the top.

The occasion today was Texas beating Oklahoma university in a long standing rivalry. Austin, TX, USA

(You read the time rite, it is 2:35 am. I was there for another hour snapping pictures).

From the corner, this icon of Austin has always looked like a mad muppet to me...

Supposed to be lit burnt orange tonight with the tower lights forming a "1". All these photogs were behind the fountain waiting for it... but it never happened.

On the bright side, the sky looked amazing

On Wednesday, March 2, the view from our condo (unit 2010 in the 360 Condominiums building) revealed that The University of Texas Tower was fully lit orange. When the tower is illuminated with orange lighting, it typically signals a UT sports win or some other celebratory event. In this case, it was lighted orange in honor of Texas Independence Day. (Apologies for the poor/grainy quality of this pic; my iPhone doesn't take very clear nighttime photos.) I was disappointed about the new Aspen Heights apartment tower obstructing our view of the UT Tower, but at least we can still see the top of it (and a sliver along the side)...

Jenn and Matt, friends of Joe & I, wanted some photos of them and their family members whipped up before the holidays. Figured this was just the perfect spot to get them done.
