Fragola
Per fragola si intendono i frutti (in realtà si tratta di un falso frutto) delle piante del genere Fragaria a cui appartengono molte specie differenti.
Comunemente con questo termine si intende la parte edule della pianta: anche se le fragole sono considerate dei frutti dal punto di vista nutrizionale, non lo sono dal punto di vista botanico: i frutti veri e propri sono i cosiddetti acheni ossia i semini gialli che si vedono sulla superficie della fragola. La fragola viene considerata come un falso frutto perché non è altro che il ricettacolo ingrossato di un'infiorescenza, posizionata di norma su un apposito stelo. La pianta, al di fuori del sistema riproduttivo, ha sistemi di moltiplicazione non sessuale, come lo stolone, ramificazione laterale radicante per mezzo del quale può produrre nuovi cespi che sono di fatto cloni dello stesso individuo vegetale.
Le fragole oggi comunemente coltivate sono ibridi derivanti dall'incrocio tra varietà europee e varietà americane.

www.google.com/search?q=pete+french+round+barn&ie=UTF... Pete French was a pioneer cattle baron in Eastern Oregon. Apparently he had quite a few of these modeled after similar barns in the midwest. They were constructed of two concentric circles. The outer ring was used to train horses and mules to work at harness. The core was used to house and feed and mares with foals during the harsh winters. The Pete French Round Barn is an Oregon State Park. The photo is a vertical floor to ceiling pano. As a one time carpenter I wanted to capture the framing details. Some timbers have been replaced and the barn partially restored.

Helianthus annuus
Il girasole (Helianthus annuus, L. 1753) è una pianta annuale appartenente alla famiglia delle Asteracee, con una grande infiorescenza a capolino.
Il fusto può arrivare a 3 metri di altezza, mentre il diametro del capolino può raggiungere i 30 cm.
Il nome comune italiano deriva dal fatto che il capolino ruota durante la giornata in direzione del sole, comportamento noto come eliotropismo.
Storia
Il girasole è originario delle Americhe dove fu coltivato fin dal 1000 a.C. Francisco Pizarro scoprì che gli Incas consideravano il girasole l'immagine del loro dio del sole. All'inizio del XVI secolo furono portati in Europa sia riproduzioni in oro del fiore, sia semi dello stesso. Heliantus è invece il nome greco del girasole.
Il mito greco
Nella mitologia greca si racconta di come una ninfa di nome Clizia si fosse innamorata del dio del sole Apollo e non facesse altro che guardare il suo carro volare nel cielo. Nove giorni dopo venne però trasformata in un girasole. Per questo motivo la parola girasole esisteva già molto tempo prima che l'"Heliantus annuus" venisse portato in Europa ed è evidente che il mito sopracitato (menzionato ne Le Metamorfosi di Ovidio) si riferisca più propriamente all'eliotropio.
Il termine girasole è anche usato per indicare le altre piante appartenenti al genere "Helianthus", molte delle quali sono perenni.
Quello che viene definito il fiore è in realtà il capolino, composto da un affollamento di numerosi fiori. I fiori esterni sono i "fiori dei petali" e possono essere gialli, marroni, arancioni o di altri colori. Questi fiori sono però sterili. I fiori che riempiono il capolino sono chiamati "fiori del disco".
La sistemazione dei fiori all'interno del disco avviene secondo la sezione aurea, ottenendo uno schema a spirali in cui il numero di spirali orarie e di quelle antiorarie sono successivi numeri di Fibonacci. Di solito ci sono 34 spirali in un senso e 55 nell'altro; in girasoli molto grandi si possono trovare 89 spirali in un senso e 144 nell'altro.
I fiori del disco maturano e diventano semi. Tuttavia ciò che è comunemente chiamato seme è il realtà il frutto (un achenio) della pianta, con i veri semi circondati da pula indigeribile. questo fiore inoltre tutto significa "allegria e gioia"

I am sorry I have not been responding to your comments.
I am currently undergoing medical treatment for a serious condition and my Flickr time has been limited.
I will continue to post ( I have a large library) and comment when I am able.
I told my wife at about 2pm in the afternoon that we’re going to have a great sunset tonight based on the clouds. At 5pm I got my gear and just started driving, in hunt for something interesting to accompany the sunset.
I have a problem with authority. Well, it’s not all authority, it’s the authority of those who 1. have little but think they have a lot, and 2. have it and abuse it. Obtaining this photo I ran into someone with #3. someone who didn’t appear to have any authority, but layed it on pretty thick.
Just down the road is Pt. Mugu Naval Air Weapons Station. A Navy base. Via public road, they have this display of retired Naval military air power, F-14 Tomcat, F-4, some missles, etc. (photo courtesy of driko. So you can just drive up here from the highway, park in the parking spaces provided and look at these jets and weapons.

Literally within SECONDS of me pulling out my tripod, a dark brown piece-of-crap car, all beat up and making faulty noises pulls up diagonal right next to me. I think nothing of it as the mid-20s Hispanic man wearing a white undershirt and some baggy jeans gets out. I’m still getting my camera ready on my tripod.

So, I walk around him and start clicking off exposures. He jumps on his cell phone and starts talking:

So he’s calling someone on me. That’s fine. I’m not going to lose this sunset. There really wasn’t much else to shoot here, so I start putting my gear back in my trunk.

This is where I was just about to formulate my next statement which would in an ideal world would have been something thought-out, creative and recited with a 1960s Clint Eastwood voice, “You’re about to see what my knuckles taste like, punk!”, but I wasn’t given the chance as the base Military Police showed up.
So the police shows up and he narks on me that I was being uncooperative and still took the photos, etc. And I told him yes, I entered this spot via public road and took these photos that several people have photographed over the years. The officer describes to me that technically I’m on govt property and photographing these planes in this direction is also photographing the base’s air strip (flight line) and the base commanding officer does not allow it. I told him that there were no signs that said this and unless otherwise stated, I can take photos anywhere I want via public property (which was about 10ft behind me). He understood and was calm about it. I even showed him my photos and he said I could keep them since I wasn’t using a 400mm lens to try and photograph some top secret stuff. But that other dude got away without me getting his information.
I’m generally a nice guy. I’m 99% happy most of the time. But don’t piss me off, cause I will go Chuck Norris on you.

Jerash
Jerash (arabo: جرش), l'antica Gerasa, è la capitale dell'omonima regione giordana, nel nord del paese, a circa trenta chilometri dalla capitale Amman.
La città è situata sulle rive del fiume Wadi Jerash[2], che fa parte del bacino idrografico del Giordano e prospera grazie al fertile terreno agricolo circostante.
Storia
Il sito esisteva già in epoca neolitica come i ritrovamenti archeologici confermano e molto probabilmente continuò ad essere abitato anche durante l'età del bronzo e quella del ferro. Grazie alla presenza del fiume Wadi Jerash già nel Neolitico il centro era abitato e d'altronde i resti che affiorano oggi dai siti archeologici appartengono ad un ventaglio storico che va dall'età del bronzo a quella romana[3].

Il primo insediamento di una certa importanza avvenne ad opera dei Greci dopo la conquista operata da Alessandro Magno; tuttavia Gerasa divenne veramente importante solo con l'avvento dei Romani.
A seguito della conquista della regione operata da Pompeo, nel 64 a.C., Gerasa fu annessa, da parte della Repubblica romana, nella provincia di Siria.
Gerasa fece parte di un sodalizio commerciale e militare assieme ad altre nove città denominato Decapolis, che la fecero espandere. Nel corso dei due secoli successivi, Gerasa strinse rapporti commerciali coi Nabatei e grazie ai profitti del commercio e alle ricchezze dell'agricoltura, la città divenne ricca e fiorente.
Nel I secolo d.C., la città venne ridisegnata e assunse il classico aspetto del modello romano: una strada colonnata principale in direzione nord-sud (cardo massimo) intersecata da due strade orientate in direzione est-ovest (decumani).
Dopo che l'imperatore Traiano, nel 106, aveva annesso il regno nabateo, a Gerasa affluirono molte ricchezze e molti edifici furono abbattuti per essere sostituiti da altri ancora più imponenti. L'opera continuò anche durante il governo di Adriano che, nel 129, visitò la città, ed in suo onore a sud della città venne edificato un Arco di trionfo. Lo schema urbanistico della città è quello classico dell'epoca e dal punto di vista architettonico è tipico del periodo di Adriano e Traiano. Nel 130, la città era abitata da circa 20 mila abitanti.
La città raggiunse il suo apice all'inizio del III secolo, quando a Gerasa fu conferito il titolo di colonia. Dopo la distruzione di Palmira, nel 273, e col contemporaneo decadimento delle vie carovaniere, a causa dello sviluppo del commercio marittimo[4], iniziò una lenta decadenza (con una breve interruzione durante il governo di Diocleziano, verso il 300), che continuò sino alla metà del V secolo, dopo che il cristianesimo era divenuta la religione principale dell'impero e quindi, nei primi anni dell'era cristiana, si ebbe un nuovo periodo di splendore, con la costruzione di edifici religiosi. E ancora sotto l'imperatore bizantino, Giustiniano (527-565) furono erette sette chiese, anche se si fece uso in buona parte le pietre provenienti dai templi e santuari romani.
L'invasione dei sasanidi provenienti dalla Persia, nel 614, e la conquista araba, del 636, accentuarono la ripresa della decadenza, e poi il devastante terremoto del 747, determinò il declino definitivo di Gerasa, la cui popolazione si ridusse ad un quarto di quella originaria.
Nei secoli successivi, ad eccezione dell'occupazione da parte dei Crociati, nel corso del XII secolo, la città fu completamente abbandonata, fino all'arrivo dei Circassi dalla Russia, nel 1878. A seguito di questa migrazione si comprese l'importanza archeologica del sito e vennero intraprese le prime opere di scavo. l'eccezionale stato di conservazione di Jerash va anche attribuito al fatto che il valore storico e archeologico del sito fu riconosciuto molto presto e fu tutelato.

Ukiah in Mendocino County is the southern tip of the “Emerald Triangle”. Before Marijuana was legalized in California, Mendocino County as well as Humboldt and Trinity County were the greatest marijuana producing counties in the USA. With legalization and competition many of those black market farmers have gone bankrupt. Note that the graphics on the front and side are designed to make the coach look like a Volkswagen bus.

A new garden at the bay of marina will be opening soon next year.
Gardens by the Bay consists of three distinctive waterfront gardens – Bay South, Bay East and Bay Central, spanning a total of 101 hectares. They are set in the heart of Singapore’s new downtown Marina Bay, encircling the Marina Reservoir like a green necklace. The Gardens will complement the array of attractions around Marina Bay.
Gardens by the Bay is an integral part of a strategy by the Singapore government that further transforms Singapore from a ‘Garden City’ to a ‘City in a Garden’, in which the city is woven into a green and floral tapestry. This aims to raise the quality of life in Singapore with a more holistic and all-encompassing programme that enhances greenery and flora in the city. First announced to the public by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong during the National Day Rally in August 2005, Gardens by the Bay will become Singapore’s premier urban outdoor recreation space, and a national icon.
An international competition for the design of the master plan was held in January 2006 to elicit the best designs for the Gardens. This attracted more than 70 entries submitted by 170 firms from 24 countries, from which two firms – Grant Associates and Gustafson Porter – were eventually awarded the master plan design for the Bay South and Bay East Gardens respectively.
The Gardens are being developed in phases. Bay South is currently being constructed and is slated to be completed by June 2012. Bay East has been developed as an interim park in support of the Youth Olympic Games 2010, and is scheduled to open to the public in late 2011 or early 2012. The full master plan implementation of Bay East and the development of Bay Central are part of the next phase of development.

Nikon Corporation (o Nikon, Nikon Corp.) è un'azienda giapponese fondata nel 1917, oggi fra i leader nel settore della fotografia e dell'ottica. Produce fotocamere, binocoli, microscopi, e strumenti di misura. È una delle società del gruppo Mitsubishi.
Storia
La società nacque nel 1917, con il nome Nippon Kōgaku Kōgyō (日本光學工業株式會社), dall'unione di due società leader nel settore ottico. La società si specializzò nella costruzione di lenti e strumenti di precisione per fotocamere, binocoli, microscopi e strumenti di rilevazione. Durante la Seconda guerra mondiale Nikon divenne fornitrice di binocoli, periscopi e altra strumentazione ottica per l'esercito giapponese e si ingrandì fino a contare 19 stabilimenti industriali e 23000 dipendenti. Dopo la fine della guerra, tornò ai prodotti per i civili, riducendosi a una singola fabbrica e 1400 impiegati. Nel 1946 acquisì il nome Nikon, dall'unione Nippon Kōgaku ("ottica giapponese") con la parola Ikon, con riferimento alla Zeiss. Anche uno dei primi modelli di fotocamera del dopoguerra prese il nome di Nikon, più precisamente Nikon I, ideato da Masahiko Fuketa.
Nel 1980, Nikon produsse il primo motore passo passo (stepper), il NSR-1010G. Da allora, Nikon ha creato oltre 50 modelli di stepper e scanner per la produzione di display basati su semiconduttore e cristalli liquidi. Nel 1982 fu fondata negli Stati Uniti la Nikon Precision Inc. (NPI), specificatamente per produrre e rivendere stepper. Alimentata da un mercato molto vivo e in espansione, questa branca della Nikon si è rapidamente ingrandita. Nel 1990, NPI aprì la propria sede centrale a Belmont (California), che oggi comprende uffici, centri di formazione, e dipartimenti di marketing. Nel 2002, la Nikon contava circa 14000 dipendenti.
Fra i prodotti più celebri di Nikon si possono citare gli obiettivi Nikkor, le fotocamere SLR della serie F, le fotocamere subacquee Nikonos e, recentemente, la serie D delle SLR digitali. La serie D (soprattutto modelli come la Nikon D200, Nikon D70 e Nikon D50), insieme alla serie Coolpix, hanno dato un contributo notevole all'affermazione della fotografia digitale a livello amatoriale e semi-professionale. Nel 2005 viene introdotta sul mercato una nuova reflex digitale, la Nikon D200, che stravolge totalmente il concetto di reflex prosumer, in quanto la Nikon D200 ha tutte le carte in regola per essere considerata una reflex professionale a tutti gli effetti, essendo dotata di caratteristiche prima riservate alle top della gamma come ad esempio la Nikon D2X. Nel 2006 Nikon ha presentato la Nikon D40, che viene considerata la più piccola e leggera reflex digitale in commercio e successivamente un miglioramento della stessa chiamato Nikon D40x.
Fra i principali competitor di Nikon si possono citare, Canon, Fujifilm, Leica, Minolta (ora Sony, che produce i sensori per la Nikon stessa), Olympus e Pentax. In particolare, Nikon e Canon si contendono una notevole porzione degli acquirenti di reflex digitali tra i fotografi amatoriali, i semiprofessionisti e professionisti.

This scene is part of the landscape of Red Rock Canyon Open Space on the border between Manitou Springs and Colorado Springs. The red sandstone here (see link above) is part of the Fountain Formation which runs much of the Front Range ( east slope of the Rockies) in Colorado. The Open Space here offers the advantage over other locations in offering hikers the luxury of walking between smaller pinnacles. The cloud cover attenuated the setting sun. Anatomical resemblance is purely accidental.
