The huge American aircraft carrier is moored in the Solent as she is too big to enter Portsmouth Harbour.

Taken at dawn this morning, just as the sky was warming up. Her bow is pointing to the West.

She has a crew of over 5,000 and is 20 stories high above the water line. She is home to 9 aircraft squadrons of over 70 helicopters and aircraft.

She is the 8th Nimitz Class warship and her deck is 1,096 feet long.

The giant Nuclear-powered US Navy Aircraft Carrier - USS Harry S. Truman, CVAN-75 moored up in Stokes Bay on the Solent on the 9th of May 2003.

Aboard were her Air Wing component CVW-3 - all with tail code 'AC' comprising a mixture of attack squadrons each with twelve aircraft - US Navy 'VFA-37 Bulls' and 'VFA-105 Gunslingers' plus USMC 'VMFA-115 Silver Eagles' all with Boeing (McDonnell-Douglas) FA-18A, FA-18A+ & FA-18C Hornet jet fighters.

Also on board were ten Grumman F-14B Tomcats from VF-32 'Swordsmen' - possibly their last Atlantic 'cruise' before retirement, four Grumman EA-6B Prowlers from 'VAQ-130 Zappers' and eight Lockheed S-3B Viking sub-hunters from 'VS-22 Checkmates' and four E-2C 'Airborne Early Warning' Hawkeyes from 'VAW-126 Seahawks'.

Seven Sikorsky SH-60F and HH-60H Seahawk helicopters from 'HS-7 Dusty Dogs' littered the deck as did a brace of COD 'Carrier-Onboard-Delivery' E-2 derivatives, the Grumman C-2A Greyhound with Det-1 from 'VRC-40 Rawhides'.

Here she is being replenished by a couple of supply vessels with some tlc by the painters on the left to stave-off the ever present salt-water corrosion.

Way too large to enter the nearby Portsmouth Naval Dockyard, these leviathans appear occasionally here for some RnR for the crew and to re-stock their larders for the remainder of the cruise duration.

All the US aircraft carriers have their number lit up like a bright Christmas tree. Here is CVN75 the USS Harry S Truman at anchor in Stokes Bay.

Her bows is off to the right of the picture. We are looking at her starboard side.

USS HARRY S. TRUMAN

CVN-75

APRIL 23, 2003

So, how often in life do you get the chance to see this?

Crossing the I-64 bridge from Hampton into Norfolk, you immediately see Norfolk Naval Station off to the right.

The ship slips, though on the other side of the promontory, are nonetheless impossible to miss, so when we crossed the bridge, the three islands of these beauties instantly jumped out at me from amidst the forest of comm masts and cranes.

From left to right they are; CVN 78, the USS Gerald R. Ford, CVN 75, the USS Harry S. Truman, and CVN 73, the USS George Washington.

I was unable to make out the individual ships on the far left, but they appear to be, in order, an oiler, can't make out the class, a Wasp class LHD, and a San Antonio class LPD.

Apologies for the somewhat blurry shot, once again it was taken from the car window. :D

USN C-2A Greyhound - 162171/51 - VRC-40 'Rawhides' from CVW-1 embarked on USS Harry S Truman, seen arriving at RAF Mildenhall.

Conditions this morning were a lot better than yesterday for viewing CVN75, the USS Harry S Truman. Here till Wednesday for some shore leave.

This 4 shot panorama looks across from the stern of CVN75 to Osborne House where Quenn Victoria liked to stay.

Overall: 1,092 feet (332.8 m); Waterline: 1,040 feet (317.0 m). Apparently carries up to 90 aircraft and helicopters.

The two little boats near the bows of the CVN75 are either MOD or Hampshire Police boats. There were another two off her stern! Coming back last night from collecting a takeaway there was a fair bit of blue flashing lights out in the bay. Taking security seriously!
