Photograph taken at an altitude of Forty seven metres at 14:06pm on a bright afternoon on Tuesday 12th May 2021, of an adult Wood pigeon(Columba palumbus), off Hythe Avenue and Chessington Avenue in Bexleyheath, Kent.
Wood pigeons are the largest and most common pigeon in the UK, and forms part of the Dove and pigeon family, genus Columba, family Columbidae. Known locally as the 'Culver' in Southeast England, these game birds are a protected species in abundance with over five and a half breeding pairs in the UK, and can grow to 42cms in length and weigh up to 550g.
Wood pigeon is also eaten regularly in the UK, a meaty bird with a distinctive deep gamey flavour. It is low in fat and high in protein and iron with a delicate texture that can be enjoyed at any time of the year. Commercially bought whole Wood pigeons sell from as little as a few pounds each.

I was originally enrolled as a SHUTTERSTOCK contributor on January 28th 2019. Shutterstock is an American stock photography company with headquarters in New York City, founded in 2003 by Photographer Jon Oringer. With a library in excess of 200 million royalty free stock photographs, I am delighted, and most grateful to have been accepted into the fold.
Having been passionate about photography since the age of seven years old, with a box brownie and black and white 120 roll film, these days I take a far more leisurely approach to my photographic exploits, a Nikon D850 FX Pro body as my trusted companion, I travel light with less constraints and more emphasis on the pure capture of the beauty that I see, more akin to my original persuits and goals some five decades previously when starting out. I would like to say a huge and heartfelt 'THANK YOU' to GETTY IMAGES, SHUTTERSTOCK, and the 27.636+ Million visitors to my FLICKR site.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Thirty eight metres at 07:34am on a cold but bright morning on Wednesday 12th May 2021, off Chessington Avenue in Bexleyheath, Kent.
Here we see a poor Female Starling (Sturnus vulgaris) having to deal with her brood of three juveniles, which she has worked so hard to keep fed and watered against the odds and chances of predation.
Although capable of excellent flight, these little terrors are still hounding her for food every which way she turns!
Starlings are Passerines and despite being a common sight in UK gardens, their decline elsewhere sees them on the red conservation list.

Photograph taken at an altitude of six metres, at 06:34am on Friday 3rd September 2019 around sunrise off 1st Street and Bevan Avenue, bewteen the boat jetty and Bevan Avenue Fishing Pier in beautiful Sidney by the sea on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.
In the distance we see Mt Baker in Washington State, USA . Known to the Lummi First nation people ( Lhaq'temish ) as Kwelshán ('Shooting place' in Nooksack), to the Halkomelem as Kwelxá:lxw, to Lushootseed speakers along the Skagit River as Teqwúbe7 “snow-capped peak'', to the Nooksack language as Kweq’ Smánit (“white mountain'') and also known as Koma Kulshan, (pronounced kō-ō’mah’ kool-shän’), the name for the Middle Fork which originates from the glaciers such as Deming and Thunder on the western slopes, she is an active glaciated andesitic stratovolcano in the Cascade Volcanic Arc and the North Cascades of Washington State in the United States, standing 3,286 metres tall and was first ascended in 1868, her last eruption recorded in 1880.
The name Mount Baker first appeared in print in Captain Vancouver’s 1798 narrative of his voyage around Vancouver Island. Legend has it that his third-lieutenant, Joseph Baker, was the first to spot the mountain while they sailed into Dungeness Bay on April 30th, 1792.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Fifty nine metres at 14:20pm on a mixed summer afternoon of cloud and brief sunny interludes on Wednesday 14th July 2021, of an adult Male White Fantail Dove (Columba livia), off Hythe Avenue and Chessington Avenue in Bexleyheath, Kent.
The fantail is a very popular breed of 'fancy pigeon', it's Latin name Columba Livia gives the clue to the fact that it is not a Dove, rather it is related to the Feral or town pigeon, hence the same name. The fantail refers to around 40 individual feathers compared to a standard 14 or so in a feral pigeon, and in some variants the fantail pigeon can have a very elaborate array of these feathers and be bread for show purposes with ornate feet feathers and head plumage.
In 'On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life', published on 24 November 1859, Charles Darwin used a Fantail in the opening chapter and referred to it as a descendant of the rock pigeon (Columba livia). Fantails are often used by pigeon flyers to help with the training of racing pigeons (Homing pigeons) and Tipplers (domestic pigeons bred to race in endurance competitions flying up to 22 hours at a time).
White doves have a huge significance in religious ceremonies the world over and 'Release Doves' have traditionally been bred for public ceremonies, weddings and funerals. They are in fact white pigeons.
The practice of using release doves has thankfully decreased over the last decade as those birds are often attacked soon after release by predators due to their white colouration marking them out against other birds. Because they are domesticated birds, they can become confused and disorientated, and do not possess the instincts and skills to survive in the wild. Injuries and deaths, and increased public awareness of animal cruelty has thankfully decreased the popularity of release doves.
This little fella has visited me daily for a week now, grazing on bird seed and mingling with the other feral pigeons, and it could well be that it is from a local dovecote, maybe even bred with homing abilities.
It is a little beauty for sure.
HISTORICAL SYMBOLISM
The Genesis flood narrative is the flood myth[a] Found in chapters 6–9 of the Book of Genesis in the Hebrew Bible and the Christian Old Testament, 'The Genesis flood narrative' is the flood myth, and a white dove is released three times as the flood waters are receding. In The Epic of Gilgamesh, an epic poem from ancient Mesopotamia, regarded as the earliest surviving notable literature and the second oldest religious text, after the Pyramid Texts, Utnapishtim sends out a dove that returns to his ship with a similar flood narrative.
The ritual of releasing doves at the Olympics originated in 1896 as part of the closing ceremony, becoming an official part of the opening ceremony in the 1920 Antwerp games. Changes were made to be purely symbolic after the doves released in the 1988 Seoul Olympics landed on the Olympic Torch and were burnt alive when it was lit!
In 2016 whilst Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger (Pope Benedict XVI) performed a ceremony for the Holocaust remembrance, two doves were attacked by a gull, one seriously injured. Similar tragedy occurred during Vatican release of doves in 2014 when Jorge Mario Bergoglio (Pope Francis) failed to get two release doves to leave from the window of the papal apartment. When he finally pushed them out, they were immediately attacked by a crow and a seagull in front of all the spectators.
White Doves are also a symbol of peace, used in many ceremonies and films including Tim Burton's marvellous 1996 film 'Mars attacks', starring an all star cast of famous actors lining up to die (Jack Nicholson, Pierce Brosnan, Annette Bening, Rod Steiger, Michael J Fox), when white doves are released as a gesture of peace and goodwill from the Earthlings.... only to see them frazzled to a pulp by the Martian ray guns!

'' I do not have a fear of heights. I do however have a fear of falling from heights ''
It's ten years since I first joined Flickr and I felt it was an appropriate time to take a gentle stroll down memory lane and reminisce with a few photographs that have meant a great deal to me along the way. They include commercial successes and personal favourites, fantastic memories and turning points in my photographic journey and all are accompanied with a little background information to the making and taking of the photograph.
(28) Niagara Canyon Bridge (Cisco Bridge over the Fraser River) on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada.
I have never had a fear of heights.
I have stood on a precarious ledge at the top of the West rim of the Grand Canyon in Arizona, I have taken photographs at 1,150ft from the top of the Stratosphere tower in Las Vegas, and walked the glass bottom bridge in the Canyon, and the 603.5ft Space needle at 400 Broad Street in Seattle. I have hung over the edge of the jutting out rocks known as the pinnacles overlooking the Cheddar Gorge in Somerset, and crossed the barriers with a massive 540ft drop down to Ross Dam in Washington State USA. I've stood at the peaks of Whistler and Blackcomb mountains at over 2,177 metres having taken the longest gondola rides in North America across the mountains, travelled in the tallest cable cars across worldwide mountain ranges.
I've also encountered wild American Black bears (Ursus americanus) and wild grizzly bears and even got between a mother and her juvenile and had a tug of war over a holdall of food and lived to tell the tale! But this photograph appears in my selection as one of the scariest things I have ever done... erm....three times!
Not for the first time in my life, I risked life and limb to capture this photograph (Chasing wild American black bears counts too I guess). Trespassing on private property, illegally entering onto the railway line some 169 metres or 554 feet high up in the air, with no railings nor protection, and facing prosecution and hefty fines if caught (not to mention certain and spectacular death should I fall), this was my first visit to this amazing location. I subsequently made two more visits on later trips in 2014 and 2016 at which point I realized that age was catching up with me and I could no longer make the steep walk up to the bridge. Some lovely memories though....
Up here there is a sense of freedom and danger like no other place I've encountered. You stand on wood, the planks move through years of use, the height can muddle your brain temporarily as you look down on the tops of giant trees and water falls that seem so tiny. You look birds in the eye as they inquisitively pass you by, and you wonder if at any moment a steam train might come thundering around the blind bend in front of you. You would fly, but you do not have wings. You are steady and yet unstable, safe to a point, vulnerable for sure. You are out of your comfort zone, brave yet afraid.
This was taken on the Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway (E&N) Niagara Canyon Bridge (Cisco Bridge over the Fraser River). The present day bridge 17 km north of Victoria, BC, over Niagara Creek Canyon formerly crossed the Fraser River at Cisco, BC, and was moved here in 1910. The metal cantilever 21 panel pin-connected Pratt deck truss bridge was pre-fabricated in England in 1884 by Hawkes, Crayshay and Company of Gateshead with Charles Conrad Schneider the Engineer and designer and shipped to Canada. It replaced the original wooden trestle bridge, which was damaged in a washout on 12 November 1886. Still very much used to this day.
The main span length of the bridge is 315 Feet (96 metres) the structure length reaching 525 Feet (160 metres) and features three main spans. It was created to carry the Canadian Pacific Railway over the Fraser River in British Columbia in an area called Cisco, and came to be known as the Cisco Bridge. According to an 1894 Annual Report of the Department of Railways and Canals of the Dominion of Canada, the bridge was painted white for a time during its service on the Fraser River, which was the same colour as other bridges in the railway division.
In later years it has come to known as the Goldstream Trestle Bridge crossing high above the Niagara Creek and offering some beautiful views of the estuary, Mount Finlayson, and the surrounding area.
Though not currently not in use, there are plans to resume passenger and freight service in the future. It is illegal and dangerous to walk out onto the bridge, which is situated in what is now private property, having unevenly spaced slats and no railings, though many tourists and hikers (myself included) walk along the line to capture photographs of the view down. That being said, many hikers take the risk and walk out to the middle of the bridge to see the view anyhow. Trespassing like this can incur fines or prosecution, and certainly could result in death should someone fall.
After taking this shot I walked along the open track to the far left metal casing where I stood and took photographs of the forest and rivers far below me. You cannot help but be enthralled by the spectacle and beauty that your eyes and brain soak in here, but it does cross your mind in such a vulnerable position, what if... The dark side of my mind can't help but think, if I were to wish to end my life then I couldn't think of a better place to do it than here with that incredible, vast and beautiful landscape all around as I fall. Could be worse.
For this trip I was carrying the Nikon D90 a DX crop sensor successor to the D80, and a fine little camera in it's day, along with a pretty average Tamron 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 Di II lens which was destined to become the first lens I ever dropped when hastily exiting a car without securing my camera bag. The lens was cheap as chips to buy, and full of distortion and compromise, not one to hold much fondness in my heart.
This photograph was published by Getty Images on June 28th 2021 and became my 5,070th frame to be published by them. It also appeared in one of my published books and others from this shoot have also gone on to publication.

Photograph taken at an altitude of nine metres at 15:38pm on Thursday 3rd September 2019 off Bradford Avenue in the garden of my Sister in Law who resides in Sidney, on Vancouver Island, British Columbia in Canada.
This is a male Anna's hummingbird (Calypte anna), easily distinguishable by it's crimson red iridescent crown and gorget. Hummingbirds are native to the Americas and are the smallest birds species measuring just three to five inches and weighing less than two grams. Their wingbeats range from 12 to 80 per second and the noise created by the wings gives them their name as the high frequency is audible to humans. They fly at up to 34mph.

Photograph taken at an altitude of zero metres, at 06:30am on Friday 3rd September 2019 around sunrise off 1st Street and Bevan Avenue, between the boat jetty and Bevan Avenue Fishing Pier in beautiful Sidney by the sea on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.
In the distance we see Mt Baker in Washington State, USA . Known to the Lummi First nation people (Lhaq'temish) as Kwelshán ('Shooting place' in Nooksack), to the Halkomelem as Kwelxá:lxw, to Lushootseed speakers along the Skagit River as Teqwúbe7 meaning “snow-capped peak'', to the Nooksack language as Kweq’ Smánit (“white mountain'') and also known as Koma Kulshan, (pronounced kō-ō’mah’ kool-shän’), the name for the Middle Fork which originates from the glaciers such as Deming and Thunder on the western slopes, she is an active glaciated andesitic stratovolcano in the Cascade Volcanic Arc and the North Cascades of Washington State in the United States, standing 3,286 metres tall and was first ascended in 1868, her last eruption recorded in 1880.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Fifteen metres, at 10:33am on Thursday June 20th 2019, off Hyde Park Corner and Park Lane A4202 in the grounds of Hyde park, a Grade 1 listed Royal Park (the largest of) of London. Spanning an area of 350 acres, the park is divided by the Serpentine and the Long water lakes, and was created by King Henry VIII in 1536 as hunting ground. It opened to the puiblic in 1637 and was extensively improved under Queen Caroline in the early righteenth century. The Great exhibition for which the Crystal Palace was erected, designed by Joseph Paxton, also took place here.
Taken off the West Carriage Drive on the Serpentine Lake in Hyde Park, here we see large group of Mute swans (Cygnus olor) resting and preening themselves. The collective name for a group of swans (not in flight) is a bevy, a herd or a bank.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Ten metres at 09:43am on Tuesday 13th April 2021 off Riverside Grass, a walkway by Gabriel's wharf on London's South Bank. In front of us are Observation point and Waterloo Beach viewpoint looking towards Gabriel's Pier and Blackfriar's Bridge.
Designed by George John Vulliamy and modelled by Charles Henry Mabey, Dolphin lamp standards depicting two stylised Dolphins or Sturgeons writhing around the base of lamp posts, adorn much of the Thames Embankment in Central London. These date back to around 1861, and newer examples where added to the South Bank in 1977, the year of Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee anniversary. In the background St Paul's Cathedral is visible.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Thirty eight metres at 11:05am on Thursday 14th May 2020 off Abbey Road B213 and New Road in the grounds of Lesnes Abbey Woods in the London Borough of Bexley, England. Lesnes Abbey woods joins to abbey wood and Abbey wood open space as well as Bostall Heath and woods.
After almost fifty days of self isolation due to the global pandemic that we know as COVID-19 Coronavirus, we are allowed to go for unlimited exercise now out whilst still observing social distancing measures, by keeping at least 2 metres away from others. A walk in the local woodlands after the rain came today to taste the fresh air and get my limbs moving again.

Photograph taken of a Pink Moon (April Full Moon) at an altitude of Fifty four metres on Monday 26th April 2021 at 20:24pm on a calm, cool and beautiful Springtime evening in off Chessington Avenue in Bexleyheath, Kent.
A supermoon (Perigee) occurs when the Moon is at it's closest distance to Earth, some 356,500km compared to it's furthest distance away (Micro moon or Apogee) at 406,700kms.
The moon is the only natural satellite of Earth. It's surface gravity is 0.1654g, around one sixth of Earths, and it's average orbital distance from us is around 384,402km (238,856 miles), or 1.28 light-seconds. The moon influences our tides and stops us in our tracks on a clear night. She is beautiful for sure.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Ten metres, at 10:32am on Tuesday June 4th 2019, on a an overcast and drizzle filled morning off Birdcage Walk and Horse Guards Road in the grounds of St James's Park. Situated in the City Of Westminster, the Park spans twenty three Hectares and is the oldest of the Royal Parks of London, with a variety of visiting and nesting birds that include Ducks, Canada Geese and Pelicans.
Here we see a beautiful juvenile Siberian White-fronted goose (Anser Albifrons) relaxing beside the lake in St James's Park. The Siberian race has a pink bill and legs and the juvenile seen here does not yet have the full white forehead blaze nor black bars on it's belly that adults do.

Photograph taken at an altitude of One metres at 16:11am on Friday March 30th 2018 off Beachy Head road and South Downs Way at Birling Gap, East Dean in Eastbourne, East Sussex, England.
A day of torrential rain, hour after hour, and fleeting moments when people could stretch their legs, let off steam, enjoy the Bank Holiday as the tide chased the horizon. I loved the bright sunlight through the cloud as it glistened on the sandy shoreline, and just as I lined up a shot, a family started running across my line of sight. Perfect.

I was originally enrolled into the GETTY IMAGES collection as a contributor on April 9th 2012, and when links with FLICKR were terminated in March 2014, I was retained and fortunate enough to be signed up via a second contract, both of which have proved to be successful with sales of my photographs all over the world now handled exclusively by them.
On November 12th 2015 GETTY IMAGES unveiled plans for a new stills upload platform called ESP (Enterprise Submission Platform), to replace the existing 'Moment portal', and on November 13th I was invited to Beta test the new system prior to it being officially rolled out in December. ESP went live on Tuesday December 15th 2015 and has smoothed out the upload process considerably.
These days I take a far more liesurely approach to my photographic exploits, and having moved from professional Nikon equipment to consumer bodies and lenses, I travel light less constraints and more emphasis on the pure capture of the beauty that I see, more akin to my original persuits and goals some five decades previously when starting out. I would like to say a huge and heartfelt 'THANK YOU' to GETTY IMAGES, and the 20.568+ Million visitors to my FLICKR site.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Four metres, at 12:21pm on Tuesday 24th September 2019 off the West Coast Road 14, on the shoreline of French Beach Provincial Park.
French Beach lies within the traditional territory of the T’Sou-ke First Nations people. Their name comes from the Sook tribe of Straits Salishans, from the SENĆOŦEN language word T'Sou-ke, the name of the species of Stickleback fish that live in the estuary of the river .
Their economy was based on hunting, fishing, and gathering, and extended families among the Straits people owned the lands and resources, which could not be sold, only inherited.
Situated on the scenic Strait of Juan de Fuca on the west coast of southern Vancouver Island, French Beach Park is a 55 Hectares site and can be accessed via Highway 14, 20km west of Sooke. It took it's name from pioneer James French who took two years to travel from New Brunswick to Victoria. His home and favourite beach would become French Beach Park in 1974.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Three metres at 13:47pm on Wednesday 3rd November 2021 off Central Parade standing beside the wall of Neptune's Arm at Herne Bay on the Thames Estuary, CT6 5JQ, England.
I left at 9am for the One hour journey down with the sun breaking through to leave a wonderful, bright sunny day. At Herne Bay it was time for my usual stop at 'Makcari's Coffe Lounge & Ice Cream Parlour' for a slice of Lemon gateaux and a lovely latte coffee before a pleasant stroll on the pebbled shoreline.
Here we see a group of adult Black-headed gulls (Chroicocephalus ridibundus) in flight in winter plumage. These are beautiful little agile birds in flight, with vivid bright vivid red bills and matching legs and a dark spot behind the eyes.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Twenty One metres, at 14:11pm on Monday 4th November 2019, off Hyde Park Corner and Park Lane A4202 in the grounds of Hyde park, a Grade 1 listed Royal Park (the largest of) of London.
Here we see a pair of juvenile Great crested grebe (Podiceps cristatus) Largest of the Grebe family, they can reach twenty inches in length with a twenty nine inch wingspan and weigh up to 3.3ibs. The distinctive black and white plumage of the young birds gives way to an adult plumage of ornate orange and brown head decoration.
Spanning an area of 350 acres, the park is divided by the Serpentine and the Long water lakes, and was created by King Henry VIII in 1536 as hunting ground. It opened to the puiblic in 1637 and was extensively improved under Queen Caroline in the early righteenth century. The Great exhibition for which the Crystal Palace was erected, designed by Joseph Paxton, was also held here.

This Four seconds long exposure was taken at an altitude of Four metres at 06:07am on Friday 6th September 2019 around sunrise off Beacon Avenue beside the new bandstand in Beacon Park, on the promenade above the beach in Sidney by the sea on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.
Totem poles are known as ᒥᐢᑎᑯᐦᑳᐣ mistikohkân in Cree and Gyáa'aang in Haida Gwaii, derived from the Algonquian word odoodem [oˈtuːtɛm] meaning "(his) kinship group". They are poles, posts and pillars often made from Western Red cedar wood into which are carved or hung symbols or figures, by Tlingit, Tsimshian, Kwakwaka'wakw and Nuu-chah-nulth and northern Northwest Coast Haida Gwaii First Nations and indigenous peoples.
The carvings commemorate cultural beliefs and ancestry, legends and events and are unique to each clan or group. Here we look out towards Moresby Passage and Coal Island, Moresby Island and Portland Island.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Three metres, at 10:41am on Friday July 2nd 2021 opposite Market Square, at 72 Central Parade, of the old Clock Tower in Herne Bay on the south-east of the Thames Estuary, England.
I left at 9am and despite a lengthy traffic jam thanks to the Kentish constabulary who decided to halt a vehicle on the inside lane of three, causing havoc and five mile tailbacks, the journey down was fine. At Herne Bay it was time for my usual stop at 'Makcari's Coffe Lounge & Ice Cream Parlour' for a slice of cherry and almond gateaux and a lovely latte coffee before a pleasant stroll on a gorgeous day.
It was the world's first free standing purpose built clock tower, the foundation stone having been laid on the 3rd October 1836, and the tower, with a brick interior and Portland stone cladding being completed by October 5th 1837.
It stands some 82 feet high to the weather vane, and originally cost around £4000. On its northern face a memorial plaque has been placed to commemorate the men of Herne Bay who volunteered for the Boar war, there being insufficient standing troops, volunteers were needed.

THE HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE OF PIGEONS
The Feral pigeon (Columba livia) gets a really bad name thanks to a whole bunch of popular misconceptions. Labelled as sky rats, flying ashtrays, rats with wings, there is even a name for extreme fear of them, peristerophobia.
Some say they spread communicable disease to humans, a myth banded by pest control companies making money out of extermination, and although they can naturally carry some disease like tuberculosis (just like many other bird species), being able to breed up to six times per year and being so commonly seen has lead to the belief that they cause damage and drive other species away (again, no scientific evidence supports this). Seen as a plague by mankind, who is...
er...
the biggest plague on the planet after all and more likely to infect pigeons with his own germs!
Being common these days seems to make some animals less appealing than others, and yet the pigeon is culturally and historically significant and utterly beautiful in terms of plumage. When was the last time you took the time to spend a few moments in the company of these gorgeous, fascinating birds, or talked to one.... Well do so soon, your life will be all the better for such interactions.
In world terms, Pigeons represent peace and good, symbolizing Prosperity and fertility, luck, fortune, peace and harmony, love and devotion and beauty and piety. It is believed that the Pigeon totem as your animal spirit guide will enter a good persons life after a period of suffering or hurt, restoring faith and the good in their world. It will symbolize Love and kindness, sacrifice and devotion, calmness and tranquility.
Their presence in dreams can have significant meaning if the dream is of catching one, killing one, a pigeon falling in the sky, finding a dead pigeon etc. Pablo Ruiz Picasso's 1949 lithograph on paper 'La Colombe', shows a white dove on a black background, widely considered a sign of peace. It was used to illustrate a poster at the 1949 Paris Peace Congress, and is now house in the Tate Gallery, London. The Lithograph went on to become a renowned international iconographic image referred to as 'The dove of peace'. The dove was in fact a Milanese pigeon which had been gifted to Picasso by friend and fellow artist Henri Émile Benoît Matisse.
They are a wild ancestor of domestic world pigeons. A common sight in UK gardens, and traditionally seen on London postcards of Piccadilly circus until the feeding of pigeons was banned around the year 2000, they can weigh up to 370g (8-13oz) with a wingspan of 34cms. There are approximately 550,000 breeding pairs in the UK, and they are protected by The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and happily on the Green status for conservation
With a name taken from the Latin word for Dove, there are around 350 recorded types of pigeon, the commonest being the Feral pigeon with an estimated European population of around 15 million. Feral pigeons are also called city doves, city pigeons, or street pigeons. They make up part of the group of columbiformes which includes the now extinct Dodo to which they are closely related. Wild pigeons live in coastal areas, whilst feral pigeons are more urban, and more often than not found in close proximity to mankind. Feral pigeons have a lifespan usually of between three to five years, much longer in captivity. Pigeons have an incredibly close link to mankind
Technically they are: Kingdom:Animalia Phylum: Chordata Class:Aves Order: Columbiformes
Family:Columbidae Genus:Columba Species:C. livia Subspecies:C. l. domestica
In the UK, Pigeons are covered under the "General Licences" and therefore it is illegal to kill them or destroy pigeon nests for any reason other than those listed under the general licences. They can be humanely culled by the land owner or their agent for a variety of reasons (mainly crop protection). At commercial premises where I worked for many years, Pigeons and babies were professionally killed on a regular basis, shot with high powered air rifles and then heads dippeds into an acid substance... it was very bloody and extremely unpleasant to witness!
They are possibly the first domesticated animal in history and Charles Robert Darwin was one of the first and most famous pigeon breeder, who recognised their beauty and abilities and place in the natural order of things. On board HMS Beagle, he sailed from Plymouth Sound on 27th December 1831 under the command of Captain Robert FitzRoy. Scheduled for a two year voyage, it actually returned on 2nd October 1836.
He published his work, 'On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life', in 1859 and it has long been considered the foundation of evolutionary biology. In the opening of the work, Darwin began with 'fancy pigeons' which were becoming fashionable to own and exhibit in London at the time.
By crossbreeding the many different species of fancy pigeon, Darwin showed that, contrary to a commonly held belief that there were two different species which spawned the multitude of domestic pigeons, they actually all came from one wild species: the Rock Dove (Columba livia).
Nathan Mayer Rothschild developed a system of communication faster than those of most governments at that time. It is believed that he used carrier pigeons and semaphore to communicate across the English Channel. Following the Battle of Waterloo he used this system to stunning effect. Through a clever stratagem, and foreknowledge of the outcome at Waterloo, Rothschild made an immense fortune by manipulating the London stock market.
ThIn the early 1800s the Rothschild family set up a network of pigeon lofts throughout Europe using homing pigeons to carry information between its financial houses. This proved to be the fastest and most efficient method of communication at that time, and the speed of the service and the ability to send and receive information ahead of the competition helped the Rothschild family amass a fortune, which still exists today. There are medals from 1870 commemorating the pigeon post in Paris.
Pigeons are highly intelligent, one of the few birds who can actually recognise themselves in a mirror, tests proving that they were capable of identifying themselves over other pigeons in photographs even with a five to seven second delay and they could even recognize humans in photographs as well. Proving that their self cognitive abilities were higher than a three year old child (who struggled with photographic recognition of a two second delay), pifeons were trained to discriminate real-time self-image using mirrors as well as videotaped self-image, and proved that pigeons can recognize video images that reflect their movements as self-image.
They proved themselves capable of being able to learn the alphabet in trials. They have been used to predict the weather with hearing far superior to that of humans in the very low frequency range that allows them to detect incoming storms not yet on the radar. They can assist in message delivery, help in search and rescue missions and even carry wartime messages across enemy lines, dating back to Greek and Roman times, and then forwards to both World Wars by the British Intelligence.
During the first world war, pigeons were dropped from an aeroplane in batches in harnesses with parachutes in order to send and retrieve messages from the resistance. A male pigeon in 1918 named Cher Ami was awarded the Croix de Guerre, an honour bestowed on foreign troops by the French Army, after saving 194 US troops who were pinned down by enemy fire.
Despite being shot several times, he still managed to deliver the message attached to him. In history pigeons have been recorded as far back as 3000BC and records show that in the 5th Century AD, both Egypt and Syria used them to send and receive messages. Greek poet Anacreon wrote poems of his tame pigeon over 2000 years ago in which he described the bird's role in carrying a love letter to the poet's lover and how the bird drank from his cup and ate from his hand.
Some scholars believe that man's connections with pigeons go as far back as Neolithic man 10,000 years ago. An archaeological discovery of lifelike pigeon images beside the figurines of the Mother goddess, dating from the Bronze Age (2400-1500 BC) in Sumerian Mesopotamia, links to worship also in Crete where the Goddess was depicted with Doves upon her head. Pigeons were also sacrificed to Aphrodite (Venus), the Goddess of love in Greco-Roman culture. The Dove was also the symbol of Demeter (Ceres).
Astarte, goddess of fertility and love was often times depicted with a pigeon in ancient Phoenician tradition and Ishtar, mother to the Sumerian people also. Goddesses Aphrodite and Venus from Greek and Roman culture were similarly often depicted with symbolic pigeons.
They are highly revered in religions including Hindi where it was believed that pigeons were messengers of deity of death, Yama. Also in Muslim and Sikh traditions as well as Christianity. Some Sikhs will ceremoniously feed pigeons in honour of Guru Gobind Singh, a high priest who was renowned as a friend to pigeons.
The Old Testament dove of Noah and the New Testament dove of the Holy Spirit are the ancestors of the dovecote birds of the past and today’s urban pigeons. In China, it is believed that with the coming of Spring, a Sparrow hawk would transform into a pigeon and vice versa, repeating the opposite transformation at the end of the season.
Pigeons have been recorded flying at more than 92mph and the average speed is around 78mph, they can also reach altitudes of 6,000 feet. Contrary to the rumour mill, pigeons are very clean birds and very little evidence exists to show that they can spread disease to humans.
Generally pigeons mate for life and are monogamous, both incubate and care for their young, and they are amazingly social creatures found in large groups. Pigeons have also saved lives on sinking ships by being released to alert nearby people, and some pigeons have received honours and awards for their part in saving lives.
They have been trained to save lives at sea by recognising the red and yellow life jackets of victims, and even being able to view the UV spectrum. They can use landmarks to recognise and retrace routes and use the sun as a guide and an internal magnetic compass.
During a study in 2016, four pigeons built up a vocabulary of between 26 and 58 written English words, they could identify visual patterns and therefore tell them apart. The birds could even identify words they hadn't seen before.
Researchers at University of California Davis Medical Center put 16 pigeons in a room with magnified biopsies of potential breast cancers. If the pigeons correctly identified them as either benign or malignant, they got a treat, Once trained, their percentages of correctly identifying the biopsies was between 85-99% accurate.
Pigeons have been recorded regularly using the subway in the United states of America, hoping on and off subway cars and seeming to understand the direction of the journey. They also on occasions perform aerial backflips, seemingly just for fun. They see the world with five spectral bands, a kaleidoscope of colour compared to humans triple system of colour perception.
These are magnificent birds that so often fall victim to mankind's prejudice and dislike. Take a look at their ornate, beautiful plumage, the many markings and differences in coloration, and think about their history and the incredible journey they have made through the centuries.
Give them some love, they have certainly earned it!

These days I take a far more leisurely approach to my photographic exploits, a Nikon D850 FX Pro body as my trusted companion, I travel light with less constraints and more emphasis on the pure capture of the beauty that I see, more akin to my original persuits and goals some five decades previously when starting out. I would like to say a huge and heartfelt 'THANK YOU' to GETTY IMAGES, and the 30.727+ Million visitors to my FLICKR site.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Twenty three metres at 10:20am on Sunday 7th March 2021 off Cockspur Street and Pall Mall East in the centre of Trafalgar Square of a three year old Harris's Hawk (Parabuteo unicinctus), formerly known as the bay-winged hawk or dusky hawk, and known in Latin America as peuco.
Employed by the Greater London Authority, this stunning male Harris's Hawk is used to deter (not captiure or kill), feral pigeons in and around central London including Trafalgar Square. In 2003 the Mayor of London closed pigeon feed sellers down and outlawed pigeons from the London area, and the Harris's hawk now deters them, and gains rewards of chicken scraps for his efforts.
He is part of a team of Hawks and in captivity they can live for twenty years, more than twice that of those birds in the wild.

One of the most amazing and surreal experiences of my life. I was out of the Buick Enclave, standing in the dusty trail and grass taking photographs of the Bison herd as they turned and began walking straight towards me.
They were calm and unworried by my presence, no angry bulls, no mothers and young babies to defend, and so I stood my ground and the herd passed right beside me, touching distance. An amazing experience in the wilds of the Alaska Highway.

This photograph of a Mother Wood Bison (Bison bison athabascae), was taken an altitude of Four hundred and sixty five metres, at 16:10pm on Wednesday May 11th 2016 past Muncho Lake Provincial Partk and heading towards Liard River Hot springs at Mile 475 on the Alazka Highway 97,British Columbia, Canada.
Often referred to incorrectly as Buffalo, the Bull Wood Bison roams the plains along the Alaska Highway, and I was fortunate to have a few encounters with these huge, majestic beauties, having several of the herd pass close by me at one point. These are the largestnative terrestrial Mammals in North America and are commonly regerred to as the American Bison. At six years, a mature Bull can exceed Two metres at the shoulder and weigh 900kgs.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Forty one metres at 07:45am on Saturday 27th February 2021 off Blackheath Avenue and Charlton Way in the grounds of Greenwich Park, one of the Royal Parks of London situated in Greenwich, South East London.
Here we see a Feral pigeon (Columba livia), a wild ancestor of domestic world pigeons. A common sight in UK gardens, and traditionally seen on London postcards of Piccadilly circus until the feeding of pigeons was banned, they can weigh up to 370g with a wingspan of 34cms. There are approximately 550,000 breeding pairs in the UK.

These days I take a far more leisurely approach to my photographic exploits, a Nikon D850 FX Pro body as my trusted companion, I travel light with less constraints and more emphasis on the pure capture of the beauty that I see, more akin to my original persuits and goals some five decades previously when starting out. I would like to say a huge and heartfelt 'THANK YOU' to GETTY IMAGES, and the 23.083+ Million visitors to my FLICKR site.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Three hundred and twenty two metres at 08:36am on Friday 24th August 2018, having paid twenty five euros for a trip on the East wing lift up to the highest viewing platform on the Tour Eiffel located at Champ de Mars, 5 Avenue Anatole France, 75007 in Paris, France. Here we look over part of Paris including Champ de Mars, 5 Avenue Anatole France, 75007 in Paris, France.
The Champ de Mars (Field of Mars), is a large park located in the Seventh arrondissement between the Eiffel Tower to the Northwest and Ecole Militaire to the Southeast. It was named after Campus Martius in Rome, Italy. It originally measured 42 hectares, but was reduced by architect Jeran-Camille Fromige for the 1890 World Exposition.
On the far left top corner we also see Musee de L'armee and Napoleon's Tomb beneath the golden dome.
The Eiffel Tower was originally designed by Gustave Eiffel and constructed between 1887-1889 as the entrance to the worlds fair in that year. It is now the worlds most visited paid monument, standing 324 metres tall (1,063ft) with three floors and eight lifts and was the tallest building in the world from 1889 to 1930.

A squirrel's prayer (A message to mankind)
Thank you for the life you give
The air I breathe, the dray in which I live
For the land around in which we roam
My wife and kids who call it home
Thank you for the food received
For love and hope and dreams believed
For every breath each day I take
For the little things that big things make
Thank you for the seasons all
For Spring and Summer, winter, fall
For happiness, contentment also
The birds and bees and flowers that grow
Thank you for the clouds and sky
The trees that offer shelter high
For rain that feeds the land I love
The earth below, the stars above
If I could ask for one small favour
Please watch over man's behaviour
I fear that dreadful changes may
Create a world of dread one day
The need to breed and feed and greed
Light pollution, lead not heed
Blinkered thoughts of exploration
Forests felled, extermination
Species dying by the hands
Of thoughtless folk as man expands
Pesticides and chemicals
Placed within the hands of fools
A planet pale and suffocating
Dwindling hope, excruciating
It's not too late if man could see
Responsibility lies with he
A squirrel, I, a chain and link
Like all who dwell on Earth I think
Thank you for my life, it's great
And Man take note... It's not too late!

Photograph taken at an altitude of Forty seven metres at 09:17am on a cold morning Saturday 22nd May 2021, off Chessington Avenue in Bexleyheath, Kent.
Here we see, Sciurus Carolinensis (Eastern Gray Squirrel or Grey Squirrel), a tree squirrel native to North America and first introduced to the UK in the 1870's. Though it was largely responsible for the decimation of our own native red squirrel population, those are now on the increase and found in certain parts of the UK including Scotland. The Greys are still an ecologically essential natural forester regenerator.

These days I take a far more leisurely approach to my photographic exploits, a Nikon D850 FX Pro body as companion to my D7200 DX, I travel light with less constraints and more emphasis on the pure capture of the beauty that I see, more akin to my original persuits and goals some five decades previously when starting out. I would like to say a huge and heartfelt 'THANK YOU' to GETTY IMAGES, and the 26.090+ Million visitors to my FLICKR site.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Seventy two metres at 08:31am on Saturday 24th June 2017 off the A20 Sidcup bypass and Old Perry Street, in the beautiful open grounds of Scadbury Park Nature Reserve in Chiselhurst in the London Borough of Bromley.
The Park was first mentioned back in the thirteenth century when it was owned by the de Scathebury family. It is also a Site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation, with over 300 acres of land, and is part of an extensive wildlife corridor together with Petts Wood and the Jubilee Country Park.
These horses are owned and loved by the family who reside in the big house off the main footpath, and they always respond to the lure of a bag of carrots and apples, as on this occasion.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Thirty eight metres at 07:58am on a cold but bright morning on Wednesday 12th May 2021, off Chessington Avenue in Bexleyheath, Kent.
Here we see a juvenile Starling (Sturnus vulgaris), sunning itself in a Vibernum Burkwoodii bush having been brought down this morning by parents from their nests up on the house chimney stacks. Starlings are Passerines and often found in noisy flocks where squabbling and stealing food from one another are common traits. They run along the ground and are capable of mimicking many sounds around them and despite being a common sight in UK gardens, their decline elsewhere sees them on the red conservation list.
