Based on this, I am making a Powerlet USB outlet. Powerlets are like those cigarette outlets, but were designed to carry power rather than lighting a cigarette.
The USB outlet will let me charge my phone, intercom, iPod, GPS, etc. This one is weatherproof, and made by NAPA.
I got my Powerlet stuff from BurnsMoto, who has been terrrific to deal with.

This can be used either as a USB thermometer to take live measurements or as a datalogger. The DealExtreme product description said it was also a hygrometer (perfect for predicting dew), but alas it is only a thermometer (although TEMPer does make models that combine thermometer and hygrometer).
I bought it to be part of my future robotic telescope, both to warn me of dew conditions (I'll have to input the relative humidty some other way now) and to record the camera's temperature as an EXIF comment in every photo.
On the next clear moonlit night I hope to leave the camera outside (without the telescope) shooting darks at different temperatures, and in time hopefully make myself a catalog of darks to use when processing star photos.
Nice case complete with all HD screws, 5 foot USB cable, IDE/SATA power/data cables and power block.
You can't miss the fact that it's switched on! There's a red HDD activity light behind the 5 blue leds.
The aluminium (or aluminum in some parts) case is fanless and runs cool.
Well printed instructions containing all the specifications and clear instructions with photos covering win98SE to XP and MacOS 9.1 to 10.3
CD with drivers for Win ME/98SE if needed.
