This can be used either as a USB thermometer to take live measurements or as a datalogger. The DealExtreme product description said it was also a hygrometer (perfect for predicting dew), but alas it is only a thermometer (although TEMPer does make models that combine thermometer and hygrometer).
I bought it to be part of my future robotic telescope, both to warn me of dew conditions (I'll have to input the relative humidty some other way now) and to record the camera's temperature as an EXIF comment in every photo.
On the next clear moonlit night I hope to leave the camera outside (without the telescope) shooting darks at different temperatures, and in time hopefully make myself a catalog of darks to use when processing star photos.
