Over 30000 tons worth of a double grain train meanders 'down stream' through Palisade Canyon on Central Pacific's portion of the original transcontinental railroad.

The CP (SP) was later joined by the Western Pacific as both railroads treaded the Humboldt River through the Canyon. Following use by the USRA during WWI, the SP and WP paired their main tracks between Weso and Alazon (basically Winnemucca and Wells) with westbound trains using the SP and eastbounds on the WP. Today this arrangement largely remains the same but now under UP ownership.

Dear friends, I am back in a cold and wet Netherlands after 2 glorious and sunny weeks in Hermanus, South Africa. I've enjoyed my mom's 80th birthday and my family spoiled me rotten!

I've shot this sunrise scene at Onrusstrand one morning very early. I've dragged my youngest brother and my nephew along and we enjoyed immensely of the fresh air and ambience.

I always wanted to take a photo like this and today I found a nice spot for it on my walk through a beech forest. These beech forests don't have any undergrowth as the canopy of leaves high overhead blocks out too much light. So it feels a bit like walking through a natural cathedral with the dim light and the tree trunks giving the impression of columns.

A Snowy Egret throws up a protective wall of water as it strikes for baitfish on Armand Bayou.

Under muddled skies, a pair of sharp CSX EMDs lead L423-19 onto double track at SW Cabin with a healthy train of Lima traffic for Cincinnati.

An eastbound UP at the nearly ghost town of Ancho, NM on March 5th

I knew Groundhogs could climb a bit but had no idea they would go so high up. The only reason I saw this Groundhog was because the Wood Thrushes in the area were quite alarmed so I looked up, half expecting to see a hawk or owl but saw this instead.

UP MSKHK 23 crosses the massive Joso trestle on the Ayer Subdivision.

Just after the UP merged with CNW. At least the Union Pacific had some interesting power leading this empty coal train.

These two low flying speedsters (Pacific Black Ducks) were in perfect opposing synchronisation as I managed quite a few shots in a row with one set of wings being up, and the other down. They were really moving too, and I was actually completely shocked and pleased that the camera locked and held focus on them. This lens combination with the extender at a fixed f16 is definitely not an ideal birds in flight set up. The ducks were skimming along the surface of the Murray River in Mannum, South Australia.
