An Overview of ADD and ADHD
These days, no parent wants to hear the words “ADD” or “ADHD” associated with their children. The moment these words are uttered, parents immediately think of uncontrollable children, basically climbing the walls, unable to study or sit down for more than a few minutes, but the truth is that these disorders are not always diagnosed properly, and when they are, many parents do not have a clue how to treat it. Getting to know what ADD and ADHD is and the ways in which to treat it effectively is a parent’s strongest weapon against these problems, and it can be a guiding light for children struggling with these disorders.
Understanding the Terms ADD and ADHD
The terms ADD and ADHD are commonly used by laymen who consider both terms to be interchangeable, and yet they are markedly different. ADD refers to “Attention Deficit Disorder” while ADHD refers to “Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder”. So, what is the difference? While those suffering from ADD tend to be more easily distracted and do not have the ability to concentrate on tasks for long periods of time, those with ADHD also suffer from very high levels of energy that they tend to burn off in a fury of activity. These children (and adults) never seem to be able to sit still, but they also tend to be very impulsive, and this is where it poses a danger to their well being.
ADD/ ADHD: Misdiagnosed and Misunderstood
These days, it seems every teacher, parent and doctor who has to deal with an active child immediately diagnoses the child as ADD or ADHD. The problem with this “trend” in diagnoses is that children are often mislabeled, and those that really need assistance are not always recognized as having the disorder.
Boys, for instance, tend to be diagnosed with ADHD more commonly than girls, but this is because many of them tend to display the “hyperactive” symptoms of the disorder. Girls with ADHD, on the other hand, tend to display the “inattentive” symptoms of the disorder, and so they are thought to be “unfocused and day-dreamy” rather than ADHD or ADD. The fact that their inattentiveness and “dreamy” behaviors are ignored makes it difficult for these children to get the help that they need, and the problem could continue to affect everything from their schoolwork to their ability to make friends.
Chemical VS Natural Treatments for ADD and ADHD
The raging debate between chemical and natural treatments for ADD and ADHD continue, and both sides make good arguments for the need to either assist children and adults with chemical medications or eradicate them completely. It should be said, however, that many parents are choosing the natural alternatives to ADD and ADHD treatments due to the sometimes severe side effects these chemical medications have on their children. Natural alternatives, such as specific diets, herbal treatments and exercise, have been gaining ground, but it might still be years before researchers will have enough information to make sound judgments with regards to these treatments.

When you laugh uncontrollably you are at your most vulnerable. I love it when I tell him a joke and he laughs so much that he can hardly breathe and is completely out of control - it is such a great sight, so natural - it cannot be faked.

I found these kids like this, laughing uncontrollably, with the scorching sun burning and dusty winds blowing, no slippers on feet, they just shoved each other and laughed.
My uncontrollable urge to make things out of metal remains unbounded and a host of rusty spring washers plus 6 old Irish Punts (with stags on) inspired me to start making this piece.
This is the chain for it, made from the spring washers plus the tangs from an old chisel and some sort of odd pentagonal burnisher or reamer.
Unlike a lot of my other pieces, I'm making this one fairly free-form, working with the materials to hand and working around issues as they occur, so the chain is a modified King's Pattern (to allow it to hang better than a plain King's Pattern there are three links in the middle of each section, not two) and the hooks for the main pendant piece were forged and fabricated without drawings or guides.
For me, working like this is both exciting and frightening.

Make sure to limit your Lupinus to your garden! It is easy to do by removing the flowering stems before any of the Lupinus seed pods are ripe. Recycle your green gold (garden waste) and soil in your own garden to keep “control”, and use it to maintain your garden flowering.

This was almost the scene of a major accident. An inch to the left and this 4WD would have rolled over onto it's roof and then kept rolling uncontrollably until it his the bottom, 30 or so more meters down. The trees saved these guys.

This is day 2, trip along the Border Track - Dog Fence.
This must be one of the best sand tracks to be found in Victoria/South Australia. It follows the border from near Pinnaroo right down to near the Melbourne - Adelaide hwy.
This track has very large sand hills to get over. Most of these hills have tracks to get around them if you are not able to get over them. Some of these hills are so extreme there's no way anyone will get over them, so this track can very easily be classed as a 'Difficult' track.
Very Important. Check with the SA National Parks and Reserves for information on when the track is closed, and what direction you need to go in.
The track is about 107km. Allow a full day to make this trip. For a more enjoyable weekend, take your time and camp anywhere along the track. Stop in or camp at Red Bluff - scenic red sandstone hill.
(This is where we stopped). Dress warm though as it gets hot in the day, freezing at night.
Make sure you pack all your recovery gear, and travel in a group with other 4wd's. (We had to recover 2 vehicles).
Check the depths of the mud holes. Some for us were over 1 meter deep. Watch out for the holes towards the end, they are really deep!
Momentum is your friend on the sand dunes. We used 15psi tyre pressures. (Try the sand dunes 3x, if you fail, take the chicken path)
We ended up getting lost around the supposed turnoff to red bluff, that according to the maps was "well signposted".
We ended up with broken eggs and bottles.
This is mostly a sandy track with dunes and provides you with a remote location for testing self and equipment without travelling deeper into the outback.
The environment is typical Victorian desert – Mallee country. Expect some scratching from Mallee scrub particularly in the Wyperfeld section and some parts of the Northern Border Track may be overgrown. Soft sand is to be found on the tracks as well as corrugations and hard gravel.
The border track is steeped in history largely due to the dispute which arose from the original survey completed between 1847 and 1850. The result is that the border is actually sighted some 3kms too far West. A fascinating account of this can be obtained from John Deckert at Westprint Heritage Maps if you manage to visit whilst in Nhill.
There is an abundance of wildlife to enjoy whilst undertaking this trip, so watch out for Emu and Kangaroo. Aboriginal rock holes can be found close to the junction with South Bore Track.
We were lucky to reach the top speed of 40 kms/hr.

My arms and legs often tremble uncontrollably, and then all of a sudden I cannot move. If I go to a cafe I look for a hidden table, and order food that is not too difficult to eat. I must constantly remind myself that nothing is impossible, it just takes longer. Like that morning when it took me 45 minutes to put the socks on my little boy. Nobody can take away the hope. The hope that there will one day be a panacea that means I can function normally again.
