Happiest child in the world (A different view competition)

India – the world’s largest democracy

An economic powerhouse, potential superpower fuelled by a population explosion

This is the view which we are accustomed to.

Poverty remains an uncontrollable constant threat

An undesired companion to this success story

This dark horror haunts even the most affluent of cities

A cycle that only a few are lucky to escape

Another view, which we in the developed world acknowledge, possibly ignore.

This child, an “economic” migrant

Upon completion of an audacious move to Punjab, North India from Bihar, West India

He currently works on less than a dollar a day

Through no choice, instead in order to survive

Arguably this child is not and economic migrant instead trapped by circumstances

Which have been passed on from generation to generation.

His own childhood innocence is becomes his alibi but also his enemy,

As an enemy it leads to vulnerability and exposure to exhausting, harsh work conditions

Whereas an alibi it acts as a shield, sheltering the child by nurturing him to see better of his current state of affairs

Lest it may tarnish his outlook.

Yet, he remains the happiest child in the world

His own happiness lies in knowing that his hard work directly benefits his mother at home

This is his own view, shared by many, myself included.

For a view is not what one sees

Rather how one sees it

Perception is everything; it holds the key to unlocking these different views

A view is complex, dynamic and ever-changing.

New thread - Friends of Barbaro now helping bring attention to Amelia :) forums.prospero.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=19552.1

Amelia left NCARES in November after being rescued from a life on a chain to go to Great Dane rescue, where she would be subsequently placed in a home that was waiting for her. However, Amelia's GI problems worsened again, and we felt it best to wait until she was healthy before her adoption. This just hasn't happened, unfortunately.

Amelia goes from extreme diarrhea where she has uncontrollable leakage, to being impacted...and she is currently having he bladder & bowels expressed several times per day, and every few days she returns to the vet to have it done more completely. Since battling a horrible UTI, and finding blood & yeast in her stool, a herniation was found in her colon, which may explain the reason she is not able to strain to have a bowel movement, and may also be putting pressure on her urethra, preventing her from urinating normally. Another possible factor in her not being able to relieve herself normally could be the severe fractures from physical abuse that were seen on her radiographs, which have resulted in severe spondylosis & degenerative joint disease in her spine as they have healed. Despite such abuse and neglect, she still remains sweet and loving and trusting of humans. Truly amazing and inspirational.

Gloria, the rescuer from CSCADR who has been taking such wonderful care of Amelia, called me in tears on 1/17, sobbing as Amelia licked her face. We had previously discussed that if Amelia required very expensive vet care to fix her problem, we just wouldn't be able to help her from a financial standpoint and we would have to have her euthanized. Our worst fears were actually facing us as she sat there with Amelia at the vet's office and she was told of the various tests & surgeries that lay in Amelia's future to diagnose & treat her. We couldn't accept the fact that in her 2 short years on this earth she would fight to survive horrible abuse and neglect, then finally her lucky day would arrive when we rescued her, only to be killed because her treatment would cost too much.

Here's a breakdown of the complex coordination of events that will be coming together over the course of Amelia's treatment so everyone can sort of know "the overall game plan".

**There are two separate offices in the same clinic...Veterinary Surgical Care (VSC) for surgeries and Veterinary Medical Care (VMC) for internal medicine. These two offices are run as two separate business in the same office. They do not overlap their billing at all.

**VMC (Dr. Nicastro & Dr. Jameson) will be responsible for doing Amelia's MRI, Echocardiogram if needed, CAT Scan if needed, and any other skilled diagnostic tests that may be necessary. Amelia had her refferral appt here today, 1/30/08, with Dr. Nicastro. (Amelia was taken to WVC on 1/21, for another thorough bowel & bladder expression - this will be done probably several times by WVC to keep her comfortable until her surgery can be scheduled.)

**VSC (Dr. Bianucci) will be responsible for repairing Amelia's herniated colon, and at the same time any biopsies if necessary based on the pancreatic bloodwork which will be back to VSC by then. This surgery will happen hopefully very soon after her referral appt on 1/30 to VSC-Internal Medicine.

**Once she recovers from the hernia repair, since it is the most urgent, we'll get her referred again to VSC-Surgery, who will do Amelia's myelogram to evaluate the damage to her spine to see if spinal surgery is necessary to improve the spondylosis & degenerative joint disease. If so, they would also do the actual spinal surgery if deemed necessary once those tests are in.

Phew!!! Amelia could have her own planning committee!!! lol For now we have the vet listed as VSC-Surgical for donations b/c we KNOW she will be having her hernia repaired and that's where the most expensive procedures will be done. Luckily, a lot of donations have been sent via Fundable.com and PayPal and checks mailed to NCARES in her name, so those funds can be sent directly where they are needed when they are needed. See below for info on donating directly to the vet's office before calling/sending money directly to them.

Amelia is only about 2 years old, so she has lots of life left to live, and she's spent all of it except a few months being beaten and starved. She deserves this chance that all of you are making possible.

So, send this to anyone & everyone you know...if everyone who heard about this donated $1, it would be a miracle.

Donations can be made in several ways:

1. Donate via PayPal on Amelia's "Fundables" page at:

www.fundable.com/groupactions/groupaction.2008-01-20.5964....

We set the goal lower than we really need b/c if the goal is not met, all pledges are lost. But the goal has been met, so we're good to go there!

2. Donate via PayPal to North Carolina Animal Resource Education Services by using the email address MATTNELIZABETH@aol.com (the invoice will tell you it is going to the NCARES organization), or mail to NCARES, 741 Old Marshall Hwy, Asheville, NC 28804. Just put "Amelia" in the subject line/message somewhere.

3. THE VET'S OFFICE WILL NOT ACCEPT CREDIT CARD PAYMENTS BY PHONE OR CHECKS MAILED TO THEIR OFFICE. TO DONATE DIRECTLY TO THE VET'S OFFICE, YOU MAY MAIL A CHECK MADE OUT TO THEM (SEE BELOW) TO NCARES ADDRESS FOR US TO HAND DELIVER TO THEM...BE SURE IT HAS YOUR PHONE NUMBER, ADDRESS, AND DRIVERS LICENSE # PRINTED/WRITTEN ON IT OR THEY WILL NOT ACCEPT IT.

MAIL THE CHECK TO NCARES AT 741 OLD MARSHALL HWY, ASHEVILLE, NC 28804. WE WILL TAKE ALL THE CHECKS WE RECIEVE WITH US TO PAY THE BILL ONCE THE ACCOUNT IS CLOSED OUT.

If any extra is recieved by check, we will either return your check to you, or you may give us permission to make it out to either NCARES or to one of the other two vets who will be treating Amelia. Remember, checks made out to NCARES are tax-deductible, while those made out to the vet are not.

So, The Gang of Four ( a loose...umm, very loose collective of folks with cameras and an uncontrollable urge to point them at people, places and things and click the shutter release) invaded the 'Big Smoke' of Toronto today.

What you must understand is that it is actually a Gang of Three with one hack tagger-on who fancies himself a photographer sometimes...mostly after a few pints but, on occasion is up early enough for that particular point-of-view to be imagined whilst sober (if it ain't obvious who I'm referring to...it is me).

Anyway, as we roamed the Spadina-Queen St. area, my fellow 'gangstas' confronted folk, requesting permission to capture them in a photograph...meantime, I was doing crazy shit with my camera, like changing all the settings willy-nilly and snapping away like a loon on a lark! Hey! That's what wanna-be camera enthusiasts do...snap four billion pictures in the hope that one turns out!

This, what you are viewing, is not "the one"! Ha! I kinda like it though, so there you go.

Cleopatra's Needle

Cleopatra's Needle is one of a pair of obelisks that were moved from the ruins of the Caesareum of Alexandria, in Egypt, in the 19th century. It was presented to the United Kingdom in 1819 by the ruler of Egypt and Sudan Muhammad Ali, in commemoration of the victories of Lord Nelson at the Battle of the Nile and Sir Ralph Abercromby at the Battle of Alexandria in 1801.

Although the British government welcomed the gesture, it declined to pay to move the obelisk to London.

The obelisk remained in Alexandria until 1877 when Sir William James Erasmus Wilson, a distinguished anatomist and dermatologist, sponsored its transportation to London from Alexandria at a cost of some £10,000 (equivalent to over £1,000,000 in 2020).

it was dug out of the sand in which it had been buried for nearly 2,000 years, and was encased in a great iron cylinder, 92 feet (28 metres) long and 16 feet (4.9 metres) in diameter. It was built at the Thames Iron Works, shipped to Alexandria in separate pieces, and built around the obelisk.

The cylinder, named the Cleopatra, had a vertical stem and stern, a rudder, two bilge keels, a mast for balancing sails, and a deck house. It acted as a floating pontoon which was to be towed to London by the ship Olga.

The effort almost met with disaster on the 14th. October 1877, in a storm in the Bay of Biscay, when Cleopatra began wildly rolling, and became uncontrollable. The Olga sent out a rescue boat with six volunteers, but the boat capsized, and all six crew were lost – they are named on a bronze plaque attached to the foot of the needle's mounting stone.

Captain Booth of the Olga eventually managed to get his ship next to Cleopatra and rescued the six men on board it. Booth reported the Cleopatra "abandoned and sinking", but she stayed afloat, drifting in the Bay, until found four days later by Spanish trawler boats.

Cleopatra was then rescued by the Glasgow steamer Fitzmaurice and taken to Ferrol in Spain for repairs. The Master of the Fitzmaurice lodged a salvage claim of £5,000 which had to be settled before departure from Ferrol, but it was negotiated down and settled for £2,000.

The paddle tug Anglia, under the command of Captain David Glue, was then commissioned to tow the Cleopatra back to the Thames. Upon their arrival in the estuary on the 21st. January 1878, the school children of Gravesend were given the day off.

A wooden model of the obelisk had previously been placed outside the Houses of Parliament, but the location had been rejected, so the London needle was finally erected on the Victoria Embankment on the 12th. September 1878.

On the 4th. September 1917, during the Great War, a bomb from a German air raid landed near the needle. In commemoration of this event, the damage remains unrepaired to this day, and is clearly visible in the form of shrapnel holes and gouges on one of the sphinxes flanking the needle.

Restoration work was carried out in 2005.

Shell Mex House

Shell Mex House, also known as 80 Strand, is a Grade II listed building located at number 80 Strand in London.

The building was opened in 1932 on the site of the Hotel Cecil, and stands behind the original façade of the hotel, between the Adelphi building and the Savoy Hotel. Broadly Art Deco in style, it was designed by Frances Milton Cashmore of the architectural firm of Messrs Joseph.

Standing 58 m (190 ft) tall, with 537,000 sq. ft (49,900 m2) of floor space, Shell Mex House has 12 floors (plus basement and sub-basement) and is immediately recognisable from the River Thames and the South Bank by the clock positioned on the south side of the building.

The clock is flanked by four large, hieratic marble figures at the south corners sculpted by William Charles Holland King.

The clock, which was known for a time as "Big Benzene", has the largest clock face in the UK, at 7.62 metres in diameter, just 0.02 metres more than the clocks on the Liver Building in Liverpool; it was supplied by Gillett & Johnston of Croydon.

The building faces the river and the Strand. It was described by architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner as:

"Thoroughly unsubtle, but it holds

its own in London's river front."

The building was for many years the London headquarters of Shell-Mex & BP, for which it was built. Shell-Mex & BP was a joint venture company created by Shell and British Petroleum in 1932, when they decided to merge their United Kingdom marketing operations.

Upon the UK marketing separation of Shell and BP in 1976, Shell Mex House became the head office of Shell UK, which was Shell's UK operating company. Changes in the way that Shell was run in the 1990's led to the disposal of the property by Shell. Today, simply known as 80 Strand, most of its floors are occupied by companies belonging to Pearson plc.

The entrance to the building, which is set back from the Strand, is through a large gated archway. A green plaque was affixed to the wall just inside the gate in March 2008, proclaiming:

"The Royal Air Force was formed and

had its first headquarters here in the

former Hotel Cecil 1st. April 1918".

Below it is a brass plate stating:

"This plaque was unveiled by the Chief

of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Sir Glenn

Torpy to mark the 90th. anniversary of the

formation of the Royal Air Force".

During World War II, the building became home to the Ministry of Supply, which co-ordinated the supply of equipment to the national armed forces. It was also the home of the Petroleum Board, which handled the distribution of petroleum products during the war. The building was badly damaged by a bomb in 1940.

The building reverted to Shell-Mex & BP on the 1st. July 1948, with a number of floors remaining occupied by the Ministry of Aviation (latterly the Board of Trade, Civil Aviation Division) until the mid-1970's.

During this time, until the department's move to its present location in Farnborough, the building was also the headquarters for the Air Accidents Investigation Branch.

On the 17th. May 2006, The Times reported that the building was for sale, and that the Indian-Kenyan Kandhari family was the front-runner in the battle to buy it from the existing owners, Vincent and Robert Tchenguiz.

The Kandharis were said to have offered £530 million for the building, but they were competing with other interested groups, including Menorah, the Israeli insurer, an Irish company, and several British companies.

An offer believed to be for £520 million was made in December 2006 by Istithmar, the investment agency of the Dubai government, which withdrew its offer before completion. The property was subsequently sold in July 2007 to a fund managed by Westbrook Partners for £988 million.

The most noticeable action of thought is that it flows through us and is an seemingly uncontrollable power. Controlling that power, ending random thoughts; to focus towards the realisation of positive motives, is where all the questions are.

I fully expected her to be over the top and uncontrollable in the ring, in fact, I nearly didn't take her at all as I knew I would be busy helping all day. But despite our lack of practice, and the fact that she was cooped up in a crate most of the day, she was as good as gold in the ring. We only came away with minor places but for me it was a real success. My little girl is beginning to mature, and she made me proud.

The weirdest thing was the tea. There were 8 Starbucks cups filled with old tea, just precariously sitting on the bottom shelf with no lids. Each with 2-8 teabags still in them.

We had to throw out about $130 of good dry tea too, it had rat droppings and spiderwebs in it. It was a shame because it was high quality oolong, jasmine, gunpowder and white.

Someone loves knitting with handspun yarns. And it's me! I knit this scarf out of three coordinating skeins of Pigeonroof Studios handspun (Krista's yarns = an uncontrollable new vice of mine)--in Monarch, Millefiore, and Ash Rose. And even though it was super-simple garter stitch, I didn't get bored once while knitting it. I'm calling it my Carpet Scarf because it has the look and texture of a carpet or rug. And hot damn! this thing is toasty! (Yeah, I do realize I am wearing a thick wool scarf in August, so "toasty" may be a wee understatement). This thing is so thick and warm--and is going to be so so good for this winter. I suspect this is the first carpet scarf of many.

My Carpet Scarf was inspired by skrillaknits' Brulee Scarf pattern, but since I can't crochet for the life of me, I did my 'crochet' edge using a sock cuff technique. I also sewed my buttons on 'free-form' and not in any orderly way. :)

Wendy Rover's beautiful & patient work on me as I coughed uncontrollably... kudos to her!

Visions of a desolate world overflowing with glorious mutations, uncontrollable sexual depravities, extreme guttural violence, blaring obscenity, spiritual corruption, moral mayhem, and self-mutilation, as seen through the graphically savage eyes of:

Mike Diana -

creator of Boild Angel and the only artists ever convicted of Obscenity and legally no allowed to draw for almost 3 years just for a comic book he drew!!!

Victor Cayro a.k.a Bald Eagles -

self-taught artist whos work oozes with the virtues of the groutesque and beautiful. His amazingly detailed works mix 80's action movie demi-god, ultra violence, and scathing humor into a personal mythology flowing straight from his id.

David Magdaleno -

A Los Angeles native who's work has gradually mutated into an inspired mix of Day of the Dead themes, classic skateboard graphics, psychedelic horror, and low-brow comedy.

Keenan Marshall Keller-

Los Angeles artist and curator whos continuously works on drawings, zines, commix, and putting together kick-ass art shows such as this one. His work flows from dark psychedelia filled with mutants, 3rd eyes, magik and surreal landscapes; to full color pieces of humor and absurdity.

These artists show the evidence of grand catastrophe, an illness that is killing both our future and our pasts… An Armageddon seen by only those who dare to look!

This one looks like a spectre or a skeleton overlooking a corpse or a mummy beneath to me.

These are the things keeping me from spending my entire week coughing uncontrollably. I bought a set of extension tubes (with electrical contacts so I can use my aperture and autofocus system!), so I'm able to do my standard "I can't handle leaving the house, so I'm going to shoot a macro shot" trick with greater ease.
