An early 1950s advert issued by Shell and following on in their great tradition of quality in terms of their publicity and advertising. The foundations of this had been laid by Shell's advertising manager in pre-WW2 years, Jack Beddington, and the company were to continue with innovative and high quality adverts such as this by Cecil Keeling. Keeling (1912 - 1976) had started as a designer with the BBC in the 1930s and later worked for other clients as seen here. The illustration is typical of his engraved (in a variety of media including lino and wood) that seems to have often featured quite 'medieval' figures.
