Agate Bay, Two Harbors MN One interesting behavior I observed was that this whole group always dove all at the same time, unlike other diving birds I've watched that dive more independently..
The relatively small yard at Two Harbors can certainly be a very busy place. One of the dock switchers is seen moving ore cars around with CN #6018 and BLE #904. At left, U789 is just arriving and preparing to tie down their train, while U792's power moves through the yard at right.
The NP 3617 and BNSF 1550 assist at a Museum event while a job works the docks at Two Harbors, in the background, with a pair of CN EMDs for power.

Canada Steamship Lines' very own Atlantic Huron comes into Agate Bay in Two Harbors, MN, upbound from I forgot where. They'd spend the rest of the day in port, loading up with Minntac taconite pellets at the Canadian National dock--soon to be downbound for Quebec City, Québec. Taken on 5/18/22.
Steam rolls off the long train of taconite as U789 descends into Two Harbors behind a trio of ex CNW Dash 8s. These old GEs are currently on borrowed time, with rebuilt Dash 9s set to take their place sooner rather than later.
There are regular rides from Duluth to Two Harbors. Look up STEAM TRAINS MN/WI. Enjoy.

A carman is getting ready to cut the 400 off from the 2 car train. A young observer on the left who's probably retired by now is taking in the action. Note the wintertime garb on the little one.
As the gang went up to the bow for blue hour shots around 6:30 pm while loading on the shiploader side of CN Dock #2 at Two Harbors, we were surprised to see a CSL boat heading for the Two Harbors, MN breakwall off our stern.
While we knew the MV CSL St-Laurent was close to Two Harbors, we had thought she would anchor outside of Two Harbors until we had completed our load of pellets for Indiana Harbor.
This past Friday, my dear friend Kathy and I jumped into her van and drove 6 hours to northern Minnesota to meet up with a group of wonderfully crazy "Aurora Hunters"! These were not necessarily photographers (many were), rather they were souls seeking yet another experience with the elusive Northern Lights.
Workshops, meetings and impromptu shooting events filled our weekend with fun. This shot is a 'wool spinning' display under an almost-full moon...a BLAST to photograph for those of us who like playing with long exposures.
My spirit soars when I surround myself with people who share my passions... <3
We were traveling to Lutsen when we heard and spotted a really great sight...a steam engine...headed to Two Harbors. The race was on to find the best site to see the train. We arrived at a dilapidated old RR station and took photos of the surroundings waiting for the train to arrive. This pic is of two trolley/scales near the station. I like the contrast of the red flowers of life with the unused old metal of the trolley/scales...next to the weathered building.

You have to look closely at the engine numbers in these shots, but here's the 402 now coupled and getting ready to depart for Ely.
Today's date, April 14, rang a bell this morning. So here goes another flashback - 62 years ago to 1957 in this case. We're at Two Harbors poking around the engine facilities and here is P class 4-6-2 402 being tended to. We are informed it's being readied for the Duluth to Ely train. What, no Budd car today?
Nicely preserved Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range 2-8-8-4 #229 sits under a cover by the depot in Two Harbors. These massive beasts represented the very best of steam power on the Missabe, hauling ore until 1959.
An unique motel combo in the little northwoods town of Two Harbors, Minnesota on Lake Superior. Not sure if it was closed for good, or just for now. Wonder what it's like to stay in Lou's Motel and Fish House .... do you come home with a smoky smell, too ??? Or maybe just a little tough around the edges like jerky :)
Evidently, tho,it's "world famous", so maybe you've heard of it ???
The big sign in the window tells smoked fish and jerky lovers to head further south on Highway 61 to Kendall's in Knife River. Sorry, motel, guests, I think you're on your own !
A long strand of sea smoke partially obscures [from left to right] DMIR dock no. 6, Great Lakes Fleet articulated tug-barge combo Presque Isle, and DMIR dock no. 2 from full view on this crisp, beautiful day from May of 2023. A keen eye will notice a strong of ore jennies on the departure track behind dock no. 6 in the far background. What I can only assume was dock personnel are seen in their little speedboat inspecting things from below. A minute or two after this was taken, they went between dock nos. 2 and 6 for this purpose. Taken at Agate Bay in Two Harbors, MN on 5/11/23.

For the first time, my "photo of the week" is a short video....a time lapse, actually.
This past weekend my dear friend Kathy and I attended an Aurora Hunters weekend in Two Harbors, MN...complete with a fantastic aurora show!
We had overcast and cloudy skies for the better part of Friday and Saturday, but we made the best of it with long exposures, exploring waterfalls and connecting with other photographers in an assortment of workshops.
One workshop was about creating time lapses. I struggle with learning...and I wrote done word-for-word what the instructor was saying. His assignment for us was to go out that evening and create a time lapse of stars.
We set up our tripods to shoot continuous images of stars with the intention of assembling them into a short video timelapse. Much to our DELIGHT and SURPRISE, the clouds parted, and we were greeted with this amazing show!!! (I still believe our dear Warren Brown smiled down from the heavens to bring us this gift...).
With squeals of delight from 150+ of my closest Aurora Hunter friends, I shot these 279 images with my NIKON D750 to create one stunning timelapse.

This lighthouse is located some 45 miles northeast of Duluth, MN. It is located in Two Harbors, MN. Its development followed a 1905 November gale that saw almost 30 ships lost. The State Park offers visits to the lighthouse, an oil house, the keeper's house, and a fog signal building.
With dynamic brakes whining, an eastbound loaded ore train on the Canadian National Iron Range Sub is about to pass under 20th Avenue in Two Harbors, Minnesota. The train is bound for the docks at Agate Bay. Power is Illinois Central SD40-3 6255, Bessemer & Lake Erie SD40T-3 904, Illinois Central SD40-3 6253 and Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range SD40T-3 405 with around a hundred hoppers loaded with taconite.
