1. Duplicated color layer, giving me Layer 1

2. Added a channel mixer, set to monochrome set red 60 green 37 blue 22 (but that can change with photo).

3. Used keyboard command Command + e to merge adjustment layer and Layer 1, giving me a black and white above the color.

4. Duplicate the black and white layer (command + j ) and invert it (command + i).

5. Put the inverted layer (Layer 1 copy) in "Linear Dodge" blending mode from the menu on the Layers Pallet. You should now have a white photo.

6. Run gaussian blur on Layer 1 copy, I used 150. This will give you a sketch look.

7. Add a levels adjustment layer and move the left slider until you get a good black.

8. In CS2 select all the layers except the background layer (the color one). In previous versions you'll need to link those layers by click on the little link boxes in the layers pallet. From the fly-out menu on the Layers Pallet choose "New Group from layers..." (in earlier versions it'll say "linked").

9. Add a layer mask to the group (user the layer mask button on the pallet) and from choose Edit > Fill and make it black at about 30 or 40 percent. Also put it in diffuse mode.

10. I flattened the image and from the Filtered menu I added an Angled Stroke with Direction balance set to 50 stroke length 15 sharpness 1. I also add a Texturizer with Canvas texture and set Relief at 5 and scaling at 100%.

Playing around with this sketch tutorial. ClaraDon turned me onto a twist. In the last step, instead of Gaussian blur, choose filter, other, minimum with a radius of 1 or 2. OK, following so far? Here is my twist.......create an image with Don's twist and then make one following the tutorial. Put the "tutorial version" on top in the layer palette and choose layer style "multiply". This is how this image was created, by using two techniques together. Have Fun!

This is an e-learning application set that Randy developed as a staff member at NAIT. It consists of a player (Adobe Flex web application) and an editor (Adobe AIR desktop app).

The project is for the Library at NAIT who want to build some online lessons (The player) for teaching students how to do research. The team came up with a plan of how each "slide" could be populated with either a video (streaming or progressive), camtasia capture, image or interactive Flash swf along with bulleted (or not) text. This defined the dataset structure. Next up: an AIR application that gave the librarians an easy way to build the xml dataset. This way they could easily develop and update the tutorial.

The project went really smoothly and Flex 4 was a pleasure to work with. RobotLegs combined with the MXML workflow is a winner! The application also uses the new TextFlow object along with a rich text editor for a convenient (and much cleaner!) way of serializing/deserializing formatted text. Thanks to Stephen Horvath's for his Simple TLF Text Editor library.

8a. Make the top, "New Layer#3" visible again.

8b. The drop shadow in "New Layer#2" probably needs adjusting so click on that layer in the layer dialog. At the top, change the Mode setting to either Multiply or Burn, and lower the opacity with the sliding bar to somewhere between 80-86.

Look at the picture to see how your layers dialog should look. It shows the order your layers should be in, the mode and opacity of "New Layer#2", and what the result image should look like.
