My tutoring student made this little guy. I'm not so sure exactly what it is, species-wise, but I am very impressed with my student's sewing abilities!

The Avro Tutor entered service with the RAF in 1933, and as well as their training role, were frequently seen in aerial formation displays. They were mainly military aircraft, and less than twenty were in private use.

The Tutor seen here was part of the RAF's original production batch of 1933, and is the last of its kind still flying!

It is powered by an Armstrong Siddley Lynx engine with a maximum Max speed of 106 knots.

Let me ask y'all this - when one is hired to tutor, does that imply sitting somewhere and helping someone with assigned work, a curricula, if you will, that is already laid out? Or does that imply creating a curricula and set of lesson plans replete with individualized materials for each session? Hmmm, the later seems to be more TEACHING FROM SCRATCH. And yet, each week, I spend 2 hours generating from thin air, creating, fine-tuning, and planning materials before going off to tutor for two hours for a child who has never done homework from school and whose parents prefer to pay the private school tuition AND me. Fascinating.

Anyhoo, here are some of the exercises I came up with for the lad.

. . . and so, I did tutor the same student again on Monday morning. and despite having a game plan, and discussing expectations with him on Sunday night, and despite us reviewing our plan and what we needed to get done when I arrived on Monday morning, well, let's just say I stayed 30 minutes longer than I had "contracted" for, endured thrown items and yelling, and got home at 10:45 am and truly, really, needed a drink. No joke.

So, when I looked at this check and realized it represented 2 hours of prep time and pulling together materials for this student, 2 round trips to his house, and 150 minutes of "time in seat" with him, it made my heart hurt a little bit. I like students. I ADORE education. I hate renting out my expertise in such circumstances. Meh.

The "rock on" finger placement was accidental, but when I saw it it was ironic enough to make me smile after the fact.

Claire Fant, instructor, tutor, and friend.

We come to the eighth and what was originally the final photo from my “People and their Passions” series.

This is one of my (and other’s at SCC’s) photos from the series. It’s probably because we all know and love Claire so much. Claire is an instructor (hence the VCT 124/125) on the board, tutor, and friend at Shoreline Community College. Always willing to help, patient, and full of knowledge. Claire is an independent designer and you can check her out at:

Also a favorite of mine because this came out the way I originally conceived, I had a very limited time with Claire to shoot this and she wasn’t the most comfortable in front of the camera. The concept was to have her as the teacher in front of the class and in the most “natural” lighting look as possible. Like the rest of this series/set, I tried to treat it as if it were an editorial assignment for a magazine, with the photos to be accompanying a short bio on the subject.

This was an assignment for a class where I was to turn in 10 photos as the final (I was allowed to submit 2 older ones from my portfolio). I originally shot the 8 finals shown here in a week, but I plan to keep shooting as many people as possible and hope to add to this set and series.

I tutored one of my most difficult (and most academically needy) students on Sunday evening . . . and because he did not have school on Monday, we agreed I would do a second session with him the next morning. He does best when he has a single, focal distraction and when it is music. So, I needed to remember to not only get up, get dressed, drink coffee and head out, but to take the computer with me. It's been awhile since I was managing an "on the road" career but my system used to be hanging things off the door, and post-it notes that would confront me if I tried to leave without necessary items. Thus, I gave myself a couple of hours of down time on Sunday night, post-tutoring, but then turned around and prepped for Monday morning, back-to-back tutoring.

Utah’s Student Tutoring Achievement for Reading (STAR) program connects elementary students with volunteer tutors to practice reading skills. The program has been in operation since 2005 and this year nearly 300 schools are participating.

This year, the program’s section on phonics got a boost with the addition of a word study component from Early Steps and Next Steps—two highly effective Tier II intervention models from the University of Utah Reading Clinic (UURC).

Since August 2013, Susan Okroy, Utah State Office of Education literacy specialist, and UURC Director Kathleen J. Brown have provided professional development for more than 350 STAR tutors.
