. . . and so, I did tutor the same student again on Monday morning. and despite having a game plan, and discussing expectations with him on Sunday night, and despite us reviewing our plan and what we needed to get done when I arrived on Monday morning, well, let's just say I stayed 30 minutes longer than I had "contracted" for, endured thrown items and yelling, and got home at 10:45 am and truly, really, needed a drink. No joke.
So, when I looked at this check and realized it represented 2 hours of prep time and pulling together materials for this student, 2 round trips to his house, and 150 minutes of "time in seat" with him, it made my heart hurt a little bit. I like students. I ADORE education. I hate renting out my expertise in such circumstances. Meh.
The "rock on" finger placement was accidental, but when I saw it it was ironic enough to make me smile after the fact.

Utah’s Student Tutoring Achievement for Reading (STAR) program connects elementary students with volunteer tutors to practice reading skills. The program has been in operation since 2005 and this year nearly 300 schools are participating.
This year, the program’s section on phonics got a boost with the addition of a word study component from Early Steps and Next Steps—two highly effective Tier II intervention models from the University of Utah Reading Clinic (UURC).
Since August 2013, Susan Okroy, Utah State Office of Education literacy specialist, and UURC Director Kathleen J. Brown have provided professional development for more than 350 STAR tutors.

I tutored one of my most difficult (and most academically needy) students on Sunday evening . . . and because he did not have school on Monday, we agreed I would do a second session with him the next morning. He does best when he has a single, focal distraction and when it is music. So, I needed to remember to not only get up, get dressed, drink coffee and head out, but to take the computer with me. It's been awhile since I was managing an "on the road" career but my system used to be hanging things off the door, and post-it notes that would confront me if I tried to leave without necessary items. Thus, I gave myself a couple of hours of down time on Sunday night, post-tutoring, but then turned around and prepped for Monday morning, back-to-back tutoring.
