me: Cyril is snoozing on the island and Lucius has already gone to bed.
Mike: turtles can't " go to bed".
me: yes they can.
Mike: they don't have beds.
me: they sleep under their island at night.
Mike: that's not a bed.
me: you don't have to have a bed to "go to bed".
rita is our turtle with character.. she likes her independence and she fights for it! :) first, she extended her borders from her turtle-box (70x70 cm) to our living room. now, she is willing to conquer our garden! :) the other day, she finds the garden door half open and lets herself out.. we were worried sick without knowing her whereabouts.. it took us almost one day (since the moment we realised that she was gone) to find her in a garden where all the patterns are matching with Rita's.. lucky for us that her weak point is the sun.. so, Alex found her the next day catching a little sun-bath! :) little one!
The problem is that she is a little domesticated (she eats fish, live warms, there are no predators, etc). we got her from a neighbour in Portugal and took her responsibility over. Being a Portuguese turtle she might not be well in the Dutch canals, or in any city-like environments.. So, we hope to give her a nice little pond in the garden where she can have her little crazy parties with her frog buddies and goldfish friends :)
But anyway, now she is back safe and sound and will be happy to be in the garden.. and it's ok that she tried to run away to the garden.. she is teaching us really what she wants..
oh, well, maybe she was just being a teenager trying to experiment with anything that shows up! :)
Such a handsome fellow, we found him walking down the side walk in front of our house! We don't live near a stream or pond! Lots of rain has washed all sorts of critters away from their homes.
This spotted turtle was found april 13th 2008 crossing the street in the king farm development in Rockville, Maryland
I got a flat tire while riding bicycle today, which sucked. This big snapping turtle was hanging out on the road right where I had to pull over. I tried to move him so he wouldn't get hit, but he hissed at me, thrashed around, tried to bite me and whip me with his tail! I said, "fine, if you want to get hit that's your business!" and left him be.
Even though he acted like he owned the road & we were in his way, he did allow Wes to move him to a safer spot on the shoulder.
Finally got to see a live turtle while snorkling at Fitzroy Island. Everyone else seemed to be finding turtles and I kept on missing them.. until May spotted this a couple of meters away, which i almost missed!
