This is Cupid, my Western Painted Turtle (Chrysemys Picta Bellii)

In the market in Iquitos, we saw so many turtle waiting to be bought to be eaten. It was so sad to me because I love turtles, but I guess when it comes down to survival and cultural practice it isn't bad to them.

The turtle was reticent to talk to us.

Pictures at the Cayman Islands Turtle Farm

Keep the smallest creatures in mind during drought conditions..like this small turtle in need of a low drink of water

A closeup of that little guy.

After a good meal and some rest, he will be tagged and released.

Sea turtles return to breed at the same beach where they were born. (This is a serious problem if their home beach is now a parking lot.) No one yet knows whether turtles who get lost going from the beach to the sea have properly imprinted on their beach, and whether this will be a problem when the time comes for them to breed.

After laying down a few feet from this gal she opened her mouth nice and wide (not sure if it was a threat display or if she was just stretching her jaw). She quickly realized I wasn’t that much of a threat and and decided I wasn’t worth her time, and went on her way.

Breeding Pool at the Turtle Farm

Various turtles, all coming up to breathe. These look great big.

The eastern snapping turtle's tail is typically about the length of half of its carapace (shell). However, juvenile's tails are longer than their carapaces.

Try to be like the turtle - at ease in your own shell.

Hawksbill Turtle

This turtle did not look quite as sleek as some of the others. An older animal, or maybe a different species?

Turtles mating provides a rare opportunity to see them on the surface - this pair were on the go for over half an hour !

Northern red-bellied turtles

I know, lots of turtle pics, but they are so cute!

If a snapping turtle is found more than a 1/2 mile from a decent natural water habitat, should you move it or let it be?
