Little Ray's Reptile Zoo Trip

I've heard of ants on a log, but not turtle on a log

Rear view of Nemo's latest lounging pose.

An African Helmeted Turtle (Terrapin) suddenly arrived in our garden the other day out of nowhere - there are no likely bodies of water around where we could think he came from. We have placed him in the care of a wildlife organisation who will place him in a suitable (wild) environment!

I encountered this huge turtle during my run one day on the East Humber River Trail. I think it may have been laying eggs.

Turtle Taken at the San Diego Zoo August 7, 2009

My name is tur; turt, tuuurtle.

This photo op was reported to me by some fellow visitors who observed it but didn't have the right camera gear. We hiked about a half mile along this channel just to get this pic! Tree climbing turtles are special!

Turtles in Laidley - chillin' in the creek Easter 2009.

This guy came visiting us last weekend.

me: Cyril is snoozing on the island and Lucius has already gone to bed.

Mike: turtles can't " go to bed".

me: yes they can.

Mike: they don't have beds.

me: they sleep under their island at night.

Mike: that's not a bed.

me: you don't have to have a bed to "go to bed".

At the turtle pond, UT Austin, TX.

There are many turtles living around the pond, and are often seen sunning on logs.

rita is our turtle with character.. she likes her independence and she fights for it! :) first, she extended her borders from her turtle-box (70x70 cm) to our living room. now, she is willing to conquer our garden! :) the other day, she finds the garden door half open and lets herself out.. we were worried sick without knowing her whereabouts.. it took us almost one day (since the moment we realised that she was gone) to find her in a garden where all the patterns are matching with Rita's.. lucky for us that her weak point is the sun.. so, Alex found her the next day catching a little sun-bath! :) little one!

The problem is that she is a little domesticated (she eats fish, live warms, there are no predators, etc). we got her from a neighbour in Portugal and took her responsibility over. Being a Portuguese turtle she might not be well in the Dutch canals, or in any city-like environments.. So, we hope to give her a nice little pond in the garden where she can have her little crazy parties with her frog buddies and goldfish friends :)

But anyway, now she is back safe and sound and will be happy to be in the garden.. and it's ok that she tried to run away to the garden.. she is teaching us really what she wants..

oh, well, maybe she was just being a teenager trying to experiment with anything that shows up! :)
