Turtle at Shady Banks Park

This turtle was actually stuck on the log. We gave it a push off.

Maybe it was just me but besides being ridiculously hot, the tour of the turtle farm was pretty miserable. It was sad seeing the miserable conditions they were being "farmed" in. There were way too many turtles in each enclosure, climbing one on top of another for air. There was also something creepy about that many animals, in constant motion, and totally silent...

It made me glad to be a mammal.

This specimen was captured in a hoop trap set at ecology camp. It must have been an old individual as it pretty much lacked any amount of middorsal keeling.

This turtle decided to lay eggs right in our camp.

At the turtle farm on Grand Cayman they had big pools with giant turtles swimming in them. Some of the turtle pens opened onto a beach area that the turtles could climb up on. I think it was just too hot at the time of day that we were there and so the turtles were all piled up in the pools to keep cool.

I followed this sea turtle while snorkeling in St. Thomas. Scale is deceiving - he was bigger than me! :^)

Our turtle, Murphy, is still molting. The bits of shell that you can see curling up are called scutes.
