Curcuma alismatifolia, Siam tulip or summer tulip is a tropical plant native to Laos, northern Thailand, and Cambodia. Despite its name, it is not related to the tulip, but to the various ginger species such as turmeric. It can grow as an indoor plant, and is also sold as a cut flower. The Pink Siam Tulip is an eye-catching perennial with a tropical feel. It pairs nicely with other tropical plants, like hibiscus and elephant ears. Prefers plenty of water, so it would be a nice companion planting on the same watering schedule as the elephant ear. Despite its common name, Summer Tulip, and its handsome shape reminiscent of tulip blooms, the Siam Tulip is actually a member of the ginger family. It's a rebloomer, producing soft pink flower spikes throughout summer.

Sometimes you can't avoid big pharma I suppose, but I like to try. This little lot is almost ready to go in an infusion. See if you can spot all of the following: Fennel seeds (digestion), dried Beetroot and Echinacea tea, dried St. John's wort (mood), Cardamom, Lovage (just tastes good, but was once thought an aphrodisiac), Ginger (digestion), fresh Tumeric and a little green tea (anti inflammatory). Did you find them all? HMM

Canna Indica - These come in reds and yellows.

Not my words but it does describe this pretty plant rather well.

"This Curcuma Cordata Giant Pink grows enchantingly with long pink and white flowers amid full and broad textured foliage that looks almost like folding fans. The giant bracts on each flower fade from a crisp white to a creamy colour towards the stem. Pink enlivens the tips of each petal on this unique tulip-like flower as it ladders high and inviting, resembling a home for fairies or creatures alike found in folklore. There is something magical about this plant, so keep it somewhere with plenty of filtered light if you want to attract some magic and fairy dust. This statement plant adores being the centre of attention in a container or pot, or being in a cosy tropical garden."

Mixed techniques. Wet Cyanotype on Hahnemühle Platinum Rag. Added: vinegar, Tumeric, H2O, H2O2. 20 min. In the garden. Coloured with watercolour pencils.

In the fresh market section, away from the front row with tourist souvenirs. Here the basics are traded; even with the growing freedoms back then in 2015 there was very limited supply of anything not grown local (besides the lack of money for most people to buy much in the first place).

The vendor here was selling chillies, ginger, peanuts, tea leaves, tumeric, black sesame and some other root or fibre that I am not sure about. All essentials of the local cuisine.
