Opened in 1924, the Hoosier Theatre shared a three-story building with the Illiana Hotel (now apartments)and storefronts. It could seat around 650 and originally featured both vaudeville and movies.

In 1963, the Wurlitzer organ from the massive Uptown Theatre in Chicago was moved into the Hoosier but it was never installed. It eventually was broken up for parts.

In 1987, the theater was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Today, recently refurbished, and still a single-screen movie house with a huge, two-story tall screen (one of the only classic movie theaters still in operation in all of Northwestern Indiana), the Hoosier now seats just over 600, and screens both second-run and classic films, as well as hosting the occasional concert or other live entertainment on its stage.

Abdul Mannan. Works as a waiter at the nearest local restaurant at Shadarghat. His family lives in this neighborhood. He earns a very little, but he always tries to fulfill their every demand. Father of 4 kids, 3 of them now go to school and he really is very happy about it.

We all know how things work in our society! people send their children to work to earn a little extra money or force them to beg for it! but Mr. Mannan wishes to give all his 4 kids proper education and do something big with their lives! He seemed a little off when he said that he may not give them expensive clothes and exquisite food, but he is willing to make sure that each one of them gets enough education to earn those for their own self!

I respect his thoughts and what he's willing to do. He could be an inspiration to lot of us.

this was taken at the Shadarghat Terminal while he was taking a short break and having a smoke. For him, watching people is the best way to spend time! i bet he could be a great portrait-photographer if he ever had a camera.

Big & Black

He asked me not take any more pictures as there was somebody still trapped inside.

I hope they're not too badly injured.
