Such a determined lill guy. He didn't stop until every kernel of corn was off the cob.

It's cold, raining, and I'm waiting for a train to show.

But how often do you get to stand on a cobbled road over an ancient bridge, in gritty countryside?

Chimney Rock is one of the striking features of the landscape around Owl Pass, in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado.

The top of Chimney Rock is 1,540 feet higher than my camera.

If this structure is strangely familiar, perhaps you viewed it from the other side, in the movie "True Grit" in which John Wayne played Rooster Cogburn, and the final scene has Cogburn charging across a meadow at outlaws charging him. He has his horse reins in his mouth, for he is firing with a pistol in his right hand and a rifle in his left. He earned an Academy Award for that role.

An annual movie festival and photography field trip to the meadow below Chimney Rock celebrate the movie, the actor, and the landscape each year.

Note that the pinnacle to the left of Chimney Rock has a window, a hole all the way through the rock wall.

This was shot at the top of Owl Creek Pass. This very near the area that final shootout in True Grit was filmed.

A car should be able to drive this road normally, but this year there was a lot of washboard on the road.

We lost our precious family member a week ago today, Shebbear was also one my favorite photo subjects... here's a memory from December 2017, in the heart of Savannah, GA.

English Counties

This is another collection of images which have been photographed over a long period of time. These are photographs taken mostly on holidays throughout our great English Counties. In the day we have travelled the length and breadth of Great Britain, with many coastal and country walks and a lot of photography.

This selection has been chosen from the many East Sussex photographs I have taken, (Bodiam to be precise). Sussex is a lovely county to visit with many places of interest.

Chimney Rock with Court House Mountain is one of those "iconic" scenes from the San Juan mountains. I definitely feel it deserves that "iconic" status...

I couldn't bring myself to post the SOOC version over this one. I hit it with a preset in Topaz Adjust (crisp, I think) and BAM! Love how it came out. Added some noise, let's just call it grit, shall we.... :-) For a sooc look, go back a couple of shots and you'll see a smaller barn built at the same time and painted the same color.

I had seen these many times, but didn't know where they were, I found them amazing, hope y'all dig em too.

In late September to early October I was in Colorado for the 2018 fall color season. I photographed many places in and around McClure Pass, Ridgway, the Dallas Divide, Ouray and Telluride and then some. This was my fourth year of doing so.

I met up with a couple fine photographers (Ryan Smith and Nick Selway) for about 5 days and had a great time.

In the past, I'd shoot the fall colors in Jackson Hole, Wyoming but I have to admit that while the fall colors are really nice in Jackson Hole, you are truly missing great fall colors if you have not been to Colorado.

Here is a capture from another secret area I always like to visit south of Ridgway, an area you can see from the 4 wheel drive dirt road. You just have to know where it is.

Thanks for stopping by.

This was shot from near the top of Owl Creek Pass Road. Location of the final shootout of True Creek is located to the bottom left of this photo.

This is an easy drive with lots of aspens and what I think is the best chimney rock in the San Juans.

With a storm approaching, I was able to snap a pic of the Mattie Ross Homestead, close to the approach they used in the opening of True Grit. It is located on the Last Dollar Road.

The original owner was Cal Lewis, whom around the turn of the 20th century, provided meat and butter for the miners in the area.

Louis Massarotti was the next owner. The Massarotti family bought the land from the Lewis family. In 1946 they left the ranch and moved to Montrose, but owned it while True Grit was filmed there.

Rodney Lewis, the current owner, is responsible for saving the homestead for future admirers.

You can see the vantage point shown in the opening credits of True Grit

Owl Creek Pass road has beautiful scenery, but the road tends to rough with washboard areas.

The sun begins to shine on the high snow capped peaks of the great Sierra Nevada Mountains and the hills above Hot Creek Gorge just south of Mammoth. Stars still twinkled in crisp clear early morning light as sunlight struck the peaks turning the bright white snow pink and orange. This is the time it was the coldest and the steam was much more pronounced in the early morning chill and you could really feel it coming up through the ground into your feet. I wanted to walk down to the creek and dip my feet in the warm waters of Hot Creek but I resisted and stayed to take pictures but as often is the case the temperature continued to drop even as the sunlight seemed to warm the colors on the distant peaks. This turned out to be one of my top favorite shots of my recent trek to the Eastern Sierra’s for the Fall Colors that line the canyons of the mountain peaks in the distance.

This was shot from a spot that was seen in the True Grit movie.

The area is on Owl Creek Pass road and is normally accessed in cars. Last year work was being done on it and it was a muddy mess. They are still working on the road, so they say there can be delays. Hopefully they will be done by the time I get there.

I realize most of the younger people don't like western movies, and probably don't know who John Wayne is, but this one is for the old folks and western lovers.

In True Grit actress Kim Darby goes to sleep beneath a rock. This is that rock.

The funny think is I have shot many pictures of this rock, not because of it's connection to True Grit, but because it sits right next to the Owl Creek Pass elevation sign. So no matter how many times I go to the San Juan Mountains and Ouray, I always learn something new.

To admire the brave war hero or to adore the innocent young girl. I wonder.

It's that time again! I've posted a new gallery on my website. The Fall Colors of Colorado Gallery is complete. If you enjoy beautiful fall colors and aspens trees, this will be the gallery just for you. Again this is one of those galleries that I feel should be viewed as a body of work as to an image here and there. For many years I've wanted to photograph the forest of Colorado. My expectations were met and then some. Creatively, I felt that this was an area that I had to see with my own eyes and camera. I've visited some impressive aspen groves throughout my photography journey, but none as impressive as the ones in Colorado. Each grove had its own character. It was an amazing experience. To see the body of work as a whole is an accomplishment for me. Hope everyone is well, happy shooting, continue to inspire each other. Peace and Love.

In the foreground is where the final shootout in John Wayne's True Grit was filmed. Of course you can see the Chimney Rock that was also in the film.

This area is located on the road and is a short distance from Owl Creek Pass. It's a beautiful area and worth seeing if you get close to it.

Hard to believe that a stick so little could keep that rock from rolling down the hill. Seen along the road near Mariposa, California

This is the Chimney Rock at Owl Creek Pass. The huge rock in the field is the one in the True Grit movie that John Wayne's horse was shot fell down by.

Owl Creek Pass road is beautiful drive with many aspens on it. This year we were just a little early, With limited time, you just can't always see them. Most cars should be able to do this road, all there is washboard areas on the road.

After several consecutive days of warm temps and sun, this day was windy with some clouds but mostly sunny. A few friends and I hiked up the side of a mountain to a rocky outcrop which was home to coachwhips and diamondbacks. While the beginning of the trip was discouraging with no finds at all, once we got to one end we found an atrox just exiting it's den, which got away from us. Shortly after on the way back, my friend spotted two large ones resting in the mouth of a crevice, one of which we captured for pictures. It was very defensive, but only struck once opting instead to rattle and stand its ground.

Yell County, Arkansas

The setting is Ouray, Colorado which was first founded as a mining town in 1884. The Camp Bird Mine produced 1.5 million ounces of gold and 4 million ounces of silver over its life. The town is located at an elevation of 7,800 feet in the San Juan Mountains in southwest Colorado. The road in the foreground of the photo is US 550 and it is the only paved road within Ouray. Between Ouray and Silverton, CO US 550 is known as the Million Dollar Highway because of the spectacular views that it offers. Today, the town offers natural hot springs and is popular for winter ice climbing. The movie industry took advantage of the setting and filmed the 1968 version of True Grit in Ouray County with scenes in the town. More recently, TV's MacGyver's grandfather Harry resided in Ouray. The views from the roof top restaurant at the Ouray Brewery make it a worthy lunch stop and the beer there is not bad either.

This is where the final shootout in John Wayne's True Grit was filmed. This on Owl Creek Pass very near the top of the pass.

This is on Owl Creek Pass Road and where True Grit was filmed. Lot of aspens on this easy road.

It wasn't easy this year, it was a muddy mess. I don't know what they were doing to the road, but with the rain and them working on it, it wasn't in good shape.

Aren’t there annunciations

of one sort or another

in most lives?

Some unwillingly

undertake great destinies,

enact them in sullen pride,

uncomprehending.

More often

those moments

when roads of light and storm

open from darkness in a man or woman,

are turned away from

in dread, in a wave of weakness, in despair

and with relief.

Ordinary lives continue.

God does not smite them.

But the gates close, the pathway vanishes.

from "Annunciation" by Denise Levertov]

The season would start for Glenn with The Grey Cup Game, which we all enjoyed yesterday (especially I, the only Westerner in the crowd of 26 family), and then would come the edict on the first Sunday before Advent - "time for the music"... No one understood and lived out the truth of his faith more than Glenn - it was real and it was tough, requiring true grit... Here's to true grit under fire!

These are located near Owl Creek Pass. One of my favorite areas for aspens. Also the added benefit of seeing the location where the final shootout in John Wayne's True Grit was filemed.
