It’s was the only ride that I ever thought of whenever I looked across at the North Shore here in Vancouver. With a combined climbing of about 3400 metres up three mountains over 140km, it was the one ride that always wanted to cross off the list. Starting in Vancouver one climbs the three mountains of Seymour, Grouse and Cypress on the North Shore, each time returning to the base before attempting the next. Each climb on is decent on its own, averaging 8% and are popular with the local cycling community, but linking them together is where the magic is. Especially given that Grouse is a gravel road. Yes, an 8% gravel service road up to a ski hill.
After three years of wanting to attempt it, the day finally came on July 21st. At 6am on a blue sky saturday morning Alex, Matt, Peter and myself departed. Rolling east to west we tackled Seymour, Grouse and Cypress over the course of 7.5 hours of riding. Three flats were encountered, a low number given that 30km was on gravel with 23c tires, an average of 2 coffees were downed and countless Clif Shot Bloks were consumed but in the end we accomplished it. A truly epic ride.

Emi Gennis is a cartoonist and illustrator from the Midwest. Her often macabre historical and true crime comics have appeared in several online and print publications, including Irene, The Cartoon Picayune, Bitch Magazine, and The Hairpin. She has also produced comics journalism for The Nib and Symbolia. Gennis is the editor of Unknown Origins & Untimely Ends, an anthology of nonfiction mystery comics (Hic & Hoc Publications, 2013). Her work appeared in the 2013 documentary Oregon Experience: Portland Noir, produced by Oregon Public Broadcasting. She has a B.A. from the University of Chicago, and an M.F.A. in Sequential Art from the Savannah College of Art & Design. Gennis currently resides in southeastern Kansas where she teaches art at Pittsburg State University. Her work can be found at emigennis.com.

This image captures the bloom of the cactus at my home in a rich but true color when shot in the dark. Each of these images of the "night-blooming cereus" are very different from each other because I was trying out several homemade lighting experiments. The image immediately previous to this one is more blue and cooler in tone.
Since this 9' tall cactus pillar blooms only once a year, I was lucky to capture images in the middle of the night, before the bees found it. There are many images on my stream of the past years' attempts to photograph this amazing desert flower. This series at present has 4 images in a row.
