Seventy-five percent of hardcore comic book and strip fans will not think TRUE! is a comic book or comic strip. (Source: I made it up). But ninety-nine percent will enjoy it. (Source: Daryl Cagle’s talent).
TRUE! is an “Encyclopedia Of Amazing Facts About Us All” compiled in single-panel cartoons by prolific cartoonist Daryl Cagle.
These statistical “facts” cover everything from what scents arouse males to which pretzel shapes are preferred by men or women. If you are not excited yet, these facts were culled from such diverse sources as The Book of Lists, Harper’s Index and The Roper Organization. As example, did you know that after criticism over “Teen Talk Barbie” [the doll] who said ‘Math class is tough’, Mattel [the toy manufacturer] introduced teacher Barbie? No? Were you in the know that after only two weeks in show business [the horse] Bamboo Harvester’s name was changed to Mr. Ed [for the television show] and he was castrated? Neigh? Do you still doubt that the reviewer’s promise that ninety-nine percent of TRUE! readers will enjoy this anthology?
Oh true unbeliever, this is because you have not seen Cagle’s interpretation of dry statistic through wry art. Cagle’s art and approach seem heavily influenced by Mad magazine in its lunatic heyday as filtered through the cartoonists own life experiences and beliefs. His minimalist style adds a sparkle and visual wit to these boring statistics that transforms each fact into delightful fancy. His tools are exaggeration, his vivid imagination, and a wonderful sense of what is visually funny.
TRUE!, while not exactly a laugh factory, is nevertheless recommended for quiet fun and reflection.
MINIVIEW: The Royals [Plan 9 Publishing]. A comic strip that is as humorless as the British royal family it satirizes. What is funny in one nation does not always translate into yucks in another, even when the language in both is English.

True Blue, and looking so new too! With ebay you can buy back the '80s, hehe! This arrived today, still in its original shrinkwrap.
Although I knew all of Madonna's hits by heart as they danced their way across the radio waves, one after the next... and although I counted her among my favorites from Lucky Star and Borderline on, I was never much of a record buyer as a kid. I preferred to spend my money on toys even up through high school (ok, I still like spending my money on toys!). So I never had anything by Madonna on vinyl. Boo hoo. But eventually I collected all of her albums on CD. For a long time, True Blue wasn't a favorite of mine. But lately I can't stop listening to it. It's in the CD player in my car, it's on my ipod. And the cover is probably the most breathtaking of all of her records. This is totally frameable! CDs are cool, ipods are cool, even cassette tapes and walkmans are cool, but there's nothing quite like a vinyl record for maxiumum coolness!
I always loved Open Your Heart, Papa Don't Preach, Live To Tell and True Blue - I still love those songs and can lisgten to them again and again. But White Heat is amazing, and Love Makes The World Go Round just makes you feel so good when you hear it. Where's the Party is energy overload, and Jimmy Jimmy is just goofy fun. Somehow True Blue went from being one of my least favorite Madonna records to one of my favorites. Ok, so I have like 5 favorites, hehe, but some of her albums are just better than others. And sometimes you go through phases where you can't get enough of one of them. Right now... True Blue, baby, I love you.

The series True Blood season dvd follows Sookie Stackhouse, a barmaid living in Louisiana who can read people's minds, and how her life is turned upside down when the Vampire Bill, walks into her place of employment two years after vampires 'came out of the coffin' on national television...
went to a trendy, yet slummy, section of the city...its where most demostrations are held....schanzenviertel or schanze for short...its where outsiders come in to protest or tag the walls of the neighborhood...mainly the people who live there are very anti_establishment people and who really do not mind the edgy neighborhood ...the buildings were from the late 1880s, but a tad run down...and the tons of garbage graffitti tags didnt help the look of the place. granted, there was some awesome graffiti and beautiful arty posters plastered all over the place too...dumb, useless tags are truely a blight
there was a little streat performance going on between a pair of young lovers...they looked really cool and mimed a couple's meet up in a movie to a relationship...it was kind of cool...though, the usa is sort of over mimes, at least there was no white makeúp...
there are many little boutiques and many little eateries on the first floor of the 4 to 6 story apartment buildings. there are scattering of cafes which probally sell more beer than cafe...there was one grocery store selling COLD BEER, but using the phrase ASS COLD which is a slang for 'extremely cold' in German, BIER ARSCHKANT 1 EURO...ASS COLD BEER 1 EURO..lol
there was some awesome graffiti and paste_up posters which were impossible to take down...you so know i would of done that...i didnt have my roll of clear packing tape, which is my secret for taking down a glued on poster. tape over the poster and gently pull off the wall.
someone did 3-D sculptures out of thick poster board...they were incredible...chamaleons, strange monsters, and assorted creatures...so, there was some very creative art work up....
the volunteer fire department had the whole building done with ROY LICTHCHENSTIEN type of drawings of firement, a woman screaming 'fire', and lots of flames....it was all professionally done, and with approval of the fire department....They spray painted the words in flames, 'FEUER UND FLAMME' in english 'FIRE AND FLAMES' which means being 'obsessed' ...quite clever...and the art work was incredible.
it was a fun walk around the trendy neighborhood, but i wouldn't want to live there, as they say.....speaking of neighborhoods, when we took the U-BAHN and S-BAHN train (U underground, S fast=direct) The conductor came on the speaker system and said, 'Eppendorfer Baum, If you want to live in a nice neighborhood, this is where you get off.' Everyone laughed. (During WWII, this is the area the British did NOT bomb during the raids, because of all the beautiful manisons. The British wanted to occupy those houses after the war. The Americans bombed the factories, not the neighborhoods.)
We did do a U-BAHN metro stop photo op...yes, we stopped at the SCHLUMP station...That brings a huge smile to any English speaker....SCHLUMP....lol..Though the state sponsored billboards , which ares 10 feet by 15 feet in the SCHLUMP metro station cause me to just break out laughing....it featured a stick drawing of a woman and man...the stick guy had his pants open while the woman stick figure was looking down them. 'PREMATURE EJACUATION? 1 out of 5 men experience it. Call for fast help to slow you down.'

Socozinho (Butorides striata) Striated Heron
Socozinho (Butorides striata) (Linnaeus, 1758), fotografado no Parque Olhos D'Água, em Brasília, Brasil.
O socozinho é uma ave da ordem Pelecaniformes da família Ardeidae. Conhecido também como socó-estudante, soco-í e socó-mirim (Pará), socó-mijão e socó-tripa.
Butorides - do gênero Butor = bútio + ides, do grego = semelhante, parecido; striatus - do latim striatus = faixa, listra.
Tem cerca de 36 centímetros. É inconfundível, devido às suas pernas curtas e amarelas e pelo seu andar agachado.
Alimenta-se com peixes, insetos aquáticos (imagos e larvas), caranguejos, moluscos, anfíbios e répteis. Permanece imóvel por longos períodos, empoleirado sobre a água ou em suas proximidades, à espera de presas.
Vive solitário o ano inteiro. No período reprodutivo, costuma fazer seus ninhos separado das demais aves da família ou mesmo da espécie, sendo raro encontrar colônias desse socó. Não chega a desenvolver uma plumagem especial de reprodução como as garças. A íris e as pernas ficam vermelhas nessa fase. Às vezes nidifica em colônias. Constrói seu ninho sobre árvores ou arbustos nos brejais. Os ovos são esverdeados ou verde-azulados (às vezes brancos ou esbranquiçados), uniformes. Põe 3 a 4 ovos.
Os adultos costumam coletar o alimento da prole a grande distância do ninhal. A procriação procede geralmente no início ou no fim da estação seca, quando o alimento para as aves aquáticas é normalmente mais farto.
Vive em qualquer lugar que haja água. Tanto no interior do continente como nos manguezais. É migratório. Anda como se esgueirasse, a passos largos e como se observasse um perigo ou uma oportunidade. Voa devagar, com o pescoço encolhido e as pernas esticadas. Para dormir, não volta a cabeça para trás, e sim mantém o bico dirigido para a frente. Costuma colocar o bico verticalmente para baixo de encontro ao peito dentre a plumagem, o qual oculta completamente. Gosta de dias chuvosos e escuros, sente-se à vontade tanto com espécies noturnas como diurnas.

Striated Heron (Butorides striata)

The Striated Heron, Butorides striata, also known as Mangrove Heron, Little Heron or Green-backed Heron, is a small heron. Striated Herons are mostly non-migratory and noted for some interesting behavioral traits. Their breeding habitat is small wetlands in the Old World tropics from west Africa to Japan and Australia, and in South America. Vagrants have been recorded on oceanic islands, such as Chuuk and Yap in the Federated States of Micronesia, the Marianas and Palau; the bird recorded on Yap on February 25, 1991, was from a continental Asian rather than from a Melanesian population, while the origin of the bird seen on Palau on May 3, 2005 was not clear.[1]
This bird was long considered to be conspecific with the closely related North American species, the Green Heron, which is now usually separated as B. virescens, as well as the Lava Heron of the Galápagos Islands (now B. sundevalli, but often included in B. striata, e.g. by BirdLife International[2]); collectively they were called "green-backed herons".
Adults have a blue-grey back and wings, white underparts, a black cap and short yellow legs. Juveniles are browner above and streaked below.
These birds stand still at the water's edge and wait to ambush prey, but are easier to see than many small heron species. They mainly eat small fish, frogs and aquatic insects. They sometimes use bait, dropping a feather or leaf carefully on the water surface and picking fish that come to investigate[3].
They nest in a platform of sticks measuring between 20–40 cm long and 0.5–5 mm thick. The entire nest measures some 40–50 cm wide and 8–10 cm high outside, with an inner depression 20 cm wide and 4–5 cm deep. It is usually built in not too high off the ground in shrubs or trees but sometimes in sheltered locations on the ground, and often near water. The clutch is 2–5 eggs, which are pale blue and measure around 36 by 28 mm.[4]
An adult bird was once observed in a peculiar and mysterious behavior: while on the nest, it would grab a stick in its bill and make a rapid back-and-forth motion with the head, like a sewing machine's needle. The significance of this behavior is completely unknown: While such movements occur in many other nesting birds where they seem to compact the nest, move the eggs, or dislodge parasites, neither seems to have been the case in this particular Striated Heron.[4]
Young birds will give a display when they feel threatened, by stretching out their necks and pointing the bill skywards. In how far this would deter predators is not known.[4]
Widespread and generally common, the Striated Heron is classified as a Species of Least Concern by the IUCN; this holds true whether the Lava Heron is included in B. striata or not.
This village on a riverbank in Cambodia is very poor. But the people make the best of it and are actually quite happy, painting their houses in the strongest colors. And those colors came out vibrantly in the intense late afternoon sunlight.
