True Diversity Dinner, Snow Goose Restaurant, Anchorage, Alaska, September 25, 2009. The True Diversity Dinner was sponsored by several Alaska bloggers and information lists who had been active in the summer 2009 fight for the Anchorage equal rights ordinance A) 2009-64. After the ordinance passed but was then vetoed by Mayor Dan Sullivan, we decided to hold the dinner as an alternative to the Mayor's Unity Dinner (renamed from what used to by the Mayor's Diversity Dinner), because, we decided, "we all deserve a seat at the table." True color photo images of Lake Erie harmful algal blooms on August 14, 2017

Pilots from Aerodata have been flying over Lake Erie this summer to map out the general scope of Harmful Algal Blooms (HAB) throughout the western basin. In addition to these amazing photos, during the flyovers, additional images are taken by a hyperspectral imager (mounted on the back of the aircraft) to improve our understanding of how to map and detect HABs. The lead PI for this project is Dr. Andrea VanderWoude.

A beautiful bunch of edelweiss display for us, the colour of the leaves is most unusual and reminds me of my parents rockery that had this flower and others with this pale whitish green leaf.The best-known species, Sinningia speciosa, was originally introduced to cultivation as Gloxinia speciosa and is still commonly known to gardeners and in the horticultural trade as "gloxinia". The true genus Gloxinia is distinguished by having scaly rhizomes rather than tubers.

Vidalia has a simply fabulous feline personality. She is very laid back and loves absolutely everybody. And she welcomes affection from everyone. Granted, Vidalia doesn't exactly care to be picked up, even by me, but once she is in my arms she settles down for loving. She does melt into my lap in the midst of other felines on a very regular basis. . . essentially whenever I sit on the couch. Given we trapped Vidalia as a pregnant adolescent, it is amazing how well she has adapted to indoor life. I still have to snicker at what a laidback momma she was to her six kittens. Remember, she was a youngster, so I strongly suspect she was a first-time momma. And she seemed a wee bit clueless. Vidalia wasn't fastidious about cleanliness, leaving Bogart the job of cleaning her crew, a role he cherished. I didn't realize how extremely casual her parenting approach was until we trapped a pregnant Moonshine (who is doing fabulous in her two-feline household, how wonderful to get updates). Moonshine maintained a tight ship, requiring bathing before meals. Honestly? I think Moonshine was the better momma, but who knows how many litters she had before I took her in for her surgery. Regardless, Vidalia takes a laidback approach to life no matter what comes her way. Even giant furbags. What a beauty she is, both inside and out.

SERGIO FRONTEDDU E VINCENZO PATTUSI SARANNO I PRIMI DUE ARTISTI A ESPORRE PER IL PROGETTO FACE OFF CON LA MOSTRA DAL TITOLO TRUE LIES DOVE SI CONFRONTERANNO CON UN TEMA LEGATO AD UN IMPORTANTE AVVENIMENTO QUALE IL CARNEVALE. NELLO SPECIFICO ANALIZZERANNO, ATTRAVERSO LE LORO OPERE, IL CONCETTO DI MASCHERA E DISSIMULAZIONE.
Il Comune di Samugheo e il Museo MURATS, in linea con il programma di promozione delle attività museali e del territorio, presentano la mostra TRUE LIES che apre il progetto FACE OFF, rassegna che proseguirà per tutto il 2014. L’intento del progetto è quello di porre due artisti a confronto tra loro, ma anche con un determinato argomento, a volte legato ai più importanti eventi della comunità di Samugheo e a volte su tematiche più generali. Con la mostra TRUE LIES saranno esposte le opere di due artisti nuoresi, Sergio Fronteddu e Vincenzo Pattusi, i quali hanno creato una serie di lavori realizzando anche opere congiunte.
La mostra verrà inaugurata sabato 18 gennaio alle ore 17:00, presso il Museo MURATS, e occuperà la prima sala del Museo. Mentre nella altre due sale rimarranno visitabili la mostra fotografica Chiara Samugheo. La mia Sardegna e, al primo piano, la collezione tessile del Museo con l’esposizione di pregiati manufatti sardi del tessile.
La mostra TRUE LIES (ossimoro inglese che significa “autentiche bugie”) vuole essere un “omaggio” al carnevale inteso come momento dell’anno in cui, attraverso l’utilizzo delle maschere, si assumono identità differenti con l’intento di rappresentare qualcun altro o qualcos’altro. Con la mostra si vuole indagare il rapporto tra le persone e l’azione del mascherare, azione che permette il cambio di identità rendendo tutto più sfuggente e soggettivamente interpretabile. Le maschere, infatti, comunicano un messaggio attraverso ciò che appaiono ma allo steso tempo servono per occultare cose e significati che possono risultare più o meno evidenti. Questo gesto può essere volutamente riconoscibile creando allora, tra il soggetto mascherato e chi guarda, un gioco delle parti dove non tutto è ciò che appare, o per lo meno diventa qualcosa di incerto e sfuggente.
Le opere di Sergio Fronteddu, realizzate con materiali quali sapone e colla, riproducono oggetti che tutti siamo abituati a vedere nella quotidianità ma in realtà sono qualcosa di differente, con la colla che ha la funzione di creare e opacizzare le immagini. I lavori di Vincenzo Pattusi giocano sull’ambiguità di volti a cui mancano caratteri fisiognomici o possiedono elementi estranei al volto umano rendendoli indecifrabili, enigmatici, dubbiosi ma nel contempo penetranti.
Per il Direttore del MURATS Baingio Cuccu e il Sindaco di Samugheo Antonello Demelas questa mostra, che apre un progetto della durata di un anno, è un ulteriore passo verso un’apertura al vitalissimo ambiente culturale della Sardegna attraverso quelle contaminazioni positive tra arti, unioni tra abilità del passato e della tradizione con la vitalità e le visioni dell’arte contemporanea.
Sergio Fronteddu nasce a Nuoro, città dove tutt'ora risiede e lavora dopo gli anni sassaresi in cui ha frequentato l'Accademia di Belle Arti. Il suo percorso artistico si stabilizza sin dall'inizio su due paletti fondamentali: da un lato irriverenti interventi pubblici; dall'altro la passione della scultura, consolidata dagli studi accademici, che si esprime con l'attenzione verso materiali insoliti come il sapone, a cui dedica una lunga produzione tematicamente riferita all'alimentazione, e la colla nelle opere più recenti. Ha partecipato a numerose mostre e iniziative culturali.
Vincenzo Pattusi, in arte LUDO 1948, è nato a Nuoro nel 1978, dopo la laurea in Storia dell’Arte e un master in conservazione e restauro, entra in contatto con l'ambiente artistico nuorese muovendo i primi passi nella street art e portando avanti un discorso pittorico che dai muri fa ritorno alla tele in studio in un gioco continuo di rimandi e citazioni. Ha eseguito diverse commissioni pubbliche e partecipato a numerose mostre in Italia e all’estero. Attualmente vive e lavora e Nuoro dove dal 2008 condivide con altri artisti il Seuna Lab, contenitore creativo per le sperimentazioni artistiche contemporanee.

The Malaysian Trapdoor Spider is an extremely rare and unique spider. Among the most primitive spiders on earth, Malaysian Trapdoor Spiders still retain segmented abdomens! These colorful little beasts may be slow with evolving, but they are fast with everything else. This species, like other trapdoor spiders, creates a cover for its' burrow entrance, known as the "trapdoor". To help catch prey, the spider will spin triplines that radiate from the trapdoor. Then, when an insect or other food item falls to the trapdoor, the Malaysian Trapdoor Spider shoots out of the ground "like lightning", and returns into its' underground lair with a freshly-killed meal. In their natural habitat, they are found in hills, or on a slope, which may help direct prey to the trapdoor. The Malaysian Trapdoor Spider is not actually a true spider, but a liphistid. Rare in the wild and almost non-existent in captivity, the Malaysian Trapdoor is a real collectors' item. Hopefully, a few of this species might become real breeders' items in the future. My wife and I both love Megan - she is an amazing young lady. We've shot with her so many times but it never gets old - actually it keeps getting better. Megan joined us recently for our Romance shoot and she looked gorgeous. Since we had a bunch of shooters I decided to try different lighting and editing techniques. I like the results but it is still a learning process. Thanks to Heather for posing Megan, and thanks to Megan for being herself.

Yesterday was the
dark anniversary of our
5th year of waging an illegal
war in Iraq. Thousands of
true patriots around America
took to the streets to protest
this horrific war. In North
Hollywood, California,
home of me and mine,
protesters took to the
Northeast corner of
Laurel Canyon Boulevard
and Ventura
with a flag-draped
coffin and placards
urging us to remember
peace.
Across the street
were pro-war
picketeers, who,
although they had more
flags, seemed less tranquil
and much angrier. When I
approached for a photo
and commented on their
"Surrender Is No
Option" sign, suggesting
that the most meaningful
option would be to pull our
soldiers out of there before
anymore are killed, as have
been nearly 4000 now before
them.
They took great umbrage to
this idea, yelling at me
and trying, in vain, to
show me how wrong I was.
Which was okay. But when a
woman saw the Beatles
button I was wearing and
said with a strong tone of
nasty,
"John Lennon was an idiot,"
I think she crossed a certain
unfortunate line. I mean -
attacking John?! Now?!
But back across the street
in the lane of peace
there was an almost zen
calm as these true
American heroes held
gentle cups of
candlelights against the
encroaching dark
knowing that our long
national nightmare is
truly coming at long last
to an end.
