Just in time for Halloween, a freak October snowstorm brought heavy wet snow to our region.. strange to see the trees peaking with autumn color suddenly blanketed in snowfall!
Winterish Allure is ready to trick or treat.
I spent some free time sewing Blythe Halloween dresses in August knowing I would not have any time in October. This is one of them. The pumpkin fabric is from Joanne's. It is a knit.

Shown life-size, at least from my perspective. I hiked the Pump Station Trail on nearby Eno River last Saturday to perhaps catch the last of the local autumn color. Working my way off the trail to the river to look at a possible composition sent me through a tangle of old spider webs. Keeping my eye on the path, I ran headlong into a web spanned across tall milkweeds that was, how shall we say, occupado. I realized it about the time one of these critters came into focus appearing quite this size at the bridge of my nose. I startled it likely more than it did me… it retreated behind a dried leaf as I bounded through its web. I can imagine her watching me approach through eight compound eyes, “Oh, yeah. Ohhh, yeah! Oh, no!” That pretty spider made for a more fitting composition. There were many more hanging around in their webs, just waiting to have their pictures taken. “Smile… and don’t blink.” This is an Araneus marmoreus spider, commonly known as a marbled orbweaver, but it’s also known by some other names… any guesses? If you thought pumpkin spider or Halloween spider, you would be right. One of my contacts pointed out that it has candy corn legs. I'm not ashamed to admit that I love candy corn, though in small quantities. It may be more an issue of good memories of Halloweens past when I was a kid. With that in mind, I'm throwing in candy corn spider, too... it just fits. It's backlit in this image, and the web is refracting the light like strands of rainbow.

It was all treats for railfans from the Canadian Pacific on Halloween this year, but maybe a little bit of a trick for the crew of this Toronto-bound manifest/ballast train. They had made their way down the last part of the Mactier Sub and onto the North Toronto within the first hour of daylight, but were halted at Leaside due to a major train traffic jam getting into Toronto Yard ahead of them. 4 eastbound trains, 2 westbounds, plus 4 continuous RC Yard Jobs always up to something. Eventually at around 11:30am, they were instructed to run around their train and head to Lambton instead. This made quite a few eyes turn as the lone SD40-2 in this consist was facing west and would end up being the one leading into Lambton. And here they are, sitting in the Lambton 5 yard track shortly after the crew hopped on a taxi to take them back to Agincourt. What a day!

History of Halloween in America…..Some American colonists celebrated Guy Fawkes Day, and in the mid-19th century, large numbers of new immigrants, especially those fleeing the Irish Potato Famine in the 1840s, helped popularize Halloween.
In the early 20th century, Irish and Scottish communities revived the Old World traditions of souling and guising in the United States. By the 1920s, however, pranks had become the Halloween activity of choice for rowdy young people.
The Great Depression exacerbated the problem, with Halloween mischief often devolving into vandalism, physical assaults and sporadic acts of violence. One theory suggests that excessive pranks on Halloween led to the widespread adoption of an organized, community-based trick-or-treating tradition in the 1930s. This trend was abruptly curtailed, however, with the outbreak of World War II, when sugar rationing meant there were few treats to hand out. At the height of the postwar baby boom, trick-or-treating reclaimed its place among other Halloween customs. It quickly became standard practice for millions of children in America’s cities and newly built suburbs. No longer constrained by sugar rationing, candy companies capitalized on the lucrative ritual, launching national advertising campaigns specifically aimed at Halloween.
Today, Americans spend an estimated $3.1 billion on candy on Halloween, according to the National Retail Federation, and the day, itself, has become the nation’s second-largest commercial holiday.

This is an un-posed, in situ photo of a western black widow I found yesterday, the day before Halloween, literally living under a decorative Halloween pumpkin on our front porch. If you look closely, you can even see one of her fangs. After taking her picture, I relocated her to the garden, since this pumpkin will only be around for a couple of weeks and isn't a good long-term home for her.
