The first Classic Trial in Canterbury for the 2022 year was a non points scoring event so many chose to get some practice on their modern bikes and try some of the harder lines. An overcast start turned to showers as we held the riders briefing then cleared for the first round, rained for the second, then stayed fine but still overcast until we finished. The excellent sections included some tight turns with short approaches onto trees and banks for the upper grades. Good to see Bodie out on the newly purchased Oset, and Kendall and Hamish providing some entertainment taking the sidechair through the sections.
The annual Cust Classic Trial was held last weekend in North Canterbury close to Christchurch and Rangiora. Great sections and great weather, plus the prospect of winning some trophies, saw 43 riders entered on machines from Pre 65, the twin shock era, and air cooled monoshock bikes. Thanks to the many people involved including section setters, BBQ cook, organisers of the trophies and tee shirts, and collating the scores on the day. Great rides by the top riders in each grade that got through the days 32 sections for only a few points. Thanks everyone for a great day out.

The annual Greybeards Trial was held in wet weather for the second year running. Persistent drizzle didn't dampen the enthusiasm of riders assembled at Travis's farm in North Loburn. The Greybeards competition is for riders over 40 only, with bonus points awarded the older the rider is. Our oldest rider, Dick, at 78 years easily won the Bob Harris Memorial for B grade riders, while a more youthful Brent won the Harley Cup for A grade. Although not competing, it was good to be joined by a number of younger riders also trying their hand at the sections. Thanks to Peter who set up the BBQ under a tarpaulin, and Dave, Peter, and Christine who set the excellent sections. After the last two Canterbury trials having damp weather, we are hoping for fine conditions next weekend for our last trial of the year. Enjoy the photos
Spotted this on Albion Street. Not quite sure what a trial hole is - perhaps LCC will replace it with a proper hole if the trial is successful! Or maybe have a series of holes around the centre of Leeds...
First Trial for the 2022 year was the Twilight Trial run by Pioneer Motorcycle Club on the Port Hills above Christchurch. Run mid-week after work 18 senior and 5 mini riders entered the event. Great to see some new riders amongst those present. An overcast start did turn to reasonable rain for most on the last lap, or last two laps if you were at the back like me. Really good sections, thanks to Derek. Most photos are on section 1, and apologies as didn't quite get all riders. Looking forward to another great year riding trials. Enjoy the photos, and hopefully see you all on a bike this year.

Another great day of Classic Trials in Canterbury, NZ, as over 40 riders tackled 4 rounds of 10 sections at Kerry's Mt Thomas property. The sections had tight turns, roots, and slippery banks that helped push my score up. The top grade also faced some challenges, but some great rides were witnessed with some riders managing low scores for the day. It was good to see some new/returning riders and more riding the harder line. Thanks to Peter who managed the BBQ, and Kerry for the use of his property. Special mention to Alistair who drove to North Canterbury from Dunedin to take part, having a good ride now on a Fantic. Enjoy the photos.

This years Classic Christmas Trial and Prize Giving was combined with a 2 day Charity Trial raising funds and awareness for Cystic Fibrosis. The 2 day trial was proposed and run by Brent and Shirley who put in a lot of work. The sections were excellent on the Saturday and then we moved to Robs place at Leithfield for a camp out Saturday night. Activities included a ride down the river to the local hotel before tea. Sunday our numbers swelled as more riders joined us for the last Classic trial of the year. Some tight sections on the Sunday gathered a few points, then we sat down to an excellent lunch cooked by Peter with some help from family. Prize giving followed bringing to the end another year of classic trials. Thanks to Brent and Shirley who set the sections both days, Peter for the lunch, and Trevor for leading the rabble all year. The weekend raised just under $780 for Cystic Fibrosis which was a great effort given the number of riders. Maybe other trials groups in NZ could consider running one event for charity next year. Looking forward to riding trials again next year.
Great weather and a turnout of 47 riders for the Cust Re-Union Classic Trial held in April each year in Canterbury, New Zealand, near the old Cust racing circuit. Thanks Brian and Dave for the excellent sections (4 laps of 8 sections), Peter for the perfectly cooked sausages, and Trevor and Christine for sorting out scores and this years trophy winners. There were plenty of trophies and certificates with Pre-65, twin shock, and air cooled mono
each offering 3 lines. Thanks for another great day of classic trials in Canterbury.
The TALMAG trial takes place each January on a corner of the Army’s training area just outside Aldershot. Every motorcycle taking part has to have been built before 1965 and they are generally ridden by people of the same period. Riding bikes that I would think twice about riding to the shops on the elderly riders scream their way through, over, up and down some alarming obstacles. A nice lack of crash barriers means that you can get nice and close to the action to get some good shots.
Just for fun I started the day trying to use nothing but a 70-200mm lens and shooting at nothing but F2.8, but I got bored and started messing about with flash instead...

Trial planting at a coal mine comparing the benefits of the application of a variety of recycled organic materials including biosolids, waste, compost, mulch and fertiliser. The seedlings are two years old.
The dragline of the open cut coal mine is visible in the background.
I re-discovered sheep dog trials as a subject to photograph last year, and my first attempt was at Chinchilla.
Twelve months later and I'm back out there, watching the action once again. Compared to last year, the grounds were remarkably green. 23 to 25 September 2022.
Another great autumn day in Canterbury, New Zealand, saw 33 riders on a range of Classic Trials machines head to Loburn to ride four rounds of nine great sections. The sections included climbs, logs, creeks and banks which claimed a few points off most of us, though some excellent rides saw a couple of rider finish the 36 sections with 35 cleans. Thanks to Peter for the BBQ, Travis for use of his property, and also to those who put in the sections. The Classic group has a couple of regular competitors who travel some distance to ride with us. They are now joined by Alistair who traveled from Dunedin to ride, and from the results had a good day. Enjoy the photos.
