Tree of Life 2015

Small, slow growing, evergreen tree. Bark - grey bark with patches of green.

Leaves - compound, 2.5 to 3 cm in length, and 2 cm wide and have a red dot at the base of the stalk of the leaf.

Flowers - In April to May. 2.5 cm across, with 5 bluish purple petals fading to white.

Fruits - yellow-orange with red flesh and black seeds.

The wood is valued for its density and high resin content. The timber is considered to be one of the densest and heaviest of all timbers and exceptionally durable. Its timber does not rot and is therefore used in the manufacture of boat propellers. Lignum vitae now faces danger of extinction in the world due to its extraction for its precious wood.

"Lignum vitae" is Latin for "tree of life", and derives its name from its medicinal uses.

Lignum vitae resin has been used to treat a variety of medical ailments. The gum when mixed with Hydrogen Peroxide imparts a blue colour of its flowers to blood stains, a fact which helps forensic scientists detect almost invisible traces of blood.

All species of the genus Guaiacum are now listed in Appendix II of CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) as potentially endangered species.
