My very first successful capture of a tree squirrel Paraxerus cepapi. They are quite common and occur widely in the northern and north-eastern parts of southern Africa. Photographed at Leeupan in the Kruger National Park.
When I was a child we rescued one where it had fallen from its nest from high up in a tree. It was blind and totally helpless but soon thrived on the milk it was fed with an eardropper and grew up regarding our home as its territory. It was free to come and go as it liked through open windows - we had branches propped up at higher windows - and took turns sleeping either in the drawers of my mom's cupboard or in bed at someone's feet. Imagine waking up with a squirrel crawling over your face by way of greeting...! Our dogs were amazing and not once did they try to harm it, despite having to share the house with it.

One day, Tom & I were visiting our favorite bald eagle nest to check on the status of the 2 eaglets which are growing strong. We were sitting there waiting for one of the parents to fly back to the nest with some food, when all of a sudden, I saw something running across the road out of the corner of my eye.
At first, I thought that maybe it was an otter, but it looked like a squirrel, but then I noticed it was quite large. Quickly, I searched my memory banks on what it could be, as I prepped to capture some images of the mystery critter. By the time I was ready to shoot, it was clear across the road and busy digging a hole to hide a prize nut for later consumption. It was keenly aware of my presence and curiosity and when satisfied that it had buried its nut sufficiently, it ran around a bit on the ground, stopping to stand on its hind legs to survey its surroundings - and me.
By the time I realized that it must be some type of really big, dark squirrel, it had run up a nearby pine tree, but managed to "strike a pose" for me.
I then found out that it was in fact a fox squirrel - named for its fox-like tail and strong hind legs. It is the largest species of tree squirrel native to the US of which there are 10 different species. They vary in color, either buff, gray, or black. Fox squirrel are different from its smaller cousin, the gray squirrel, in both its size and # of teeth (having 20 teeth as opposed to 22). They weigh about 3# and measure about 10", with an equally long bushy tail. Nuts, buds, flowers, and young leaves are staples of their diet. Those "hidden gem" nuts are foraged later when needed using their sense of smell. While they spend lots of time on the ground running around, they can also be found in pine, oak, hickory, and/or walnut trees.

I love this image and am now a huge fan of these guys.... for I learned something new that day, as well as today while researching the fox squirrel. I mean, come on, look at that amazing huge bushy tail on this guy!

This crab apple tree is in a vacant lot near my work. I go there frequently to eat my lunch and read a book, however this fall I noticed the squirrels living large on it's abundant production. Now I park my car right next to the tree and wait for the action to begin. I usually don't get more than a few photos at a time, but they're pretty cute.
The photos of these squirrels eating the crabapples all look the same while they're sitting there munching on them. Their mouths are so small that you don't get to see a lot, but every so often I get a good one. This one is great. I love his little tongue sticking out.
I have a lot of these photos, but pretty soon I'm afraid the fun is going to run out. The below zero temps froze the apples hard, and now as it warms up above freezing, I'm afraid the remaining apples will turn to mush, ending the party. Till then I'll keep an eye out to see how it goes.

Sciurus carolinensis, common name eastern gray squirrel or grey squirrel depending on region, is a tree squirrel in the genus Sciurus. It is native to eastern North America, but in Europe it is regarded as an invasive species. This one was photographed as it made a brief stop on its way through the trees at the Whisby Nature Reserve near Lincoln.
The generic name, Sciurus, is derived from two Greek words, skia, meaning shadow, and oura, meaning tail. This name alludes to the squirrel sitting in the shadow of its tail.

From a squirrel's point of view, birds, especially birds around a bird feeder, are generous and rain food from the sky. This Abert Squirrel is no exception and today it found a most wonderful harvest under our bird feeder.
It's the Blue Jays, I think. I am pretty sure they have signed a pact with the squirrels where the Jays scatter all of the food out of the feeder to the ground below, in return for whatever it is that squirrels can do for Jays. In any event, the Jays took care of the "empty the feeder on the ground" bit and this squirrel enjoyed their hard work.
This squirrel saw me, but decided to pay no heed whatsoever. Casually, carefully and selectively it picked through the bountiful seeds on the ground, finding exactly the one that suited it, then it turned around and decided to show me the perfect seed.
But the joke was on the squirrel, you see. For there I was, camera in hand, patiently waiting for him to turn around. "Click" went the camera. "Gone" went the squirrel. And both of us couldn't have been happier.

As I took my dachshund outside to do his business, I clearly heard a squirrel making what I presume were mating calls. Lots of chirps and squeaks going constantly. I immediately started looking around to find where the noises were coming from. There, up in our Japanese Maple tree, sat this very excited squirrel.....fluffing and jerking his tail around in rhythm with his chirps and squeaks.
I tried to take a picture or two with my cellphone, but that wasn't cutting the mustard. So I picked up my pup, went back into the house, grabbed my DSLR, and came back out to find the squirrel in the same place doing the same thing. I was then able to move in and get some pictures of the little guy. He knew I was there, but didn't seem to care at all, cause he was in the tree, and it seemed love was in the air. After some looking around, I finally saw what I assume was his prospective mate, sitting atop our house roof-line, watching on with anticipation.
