Quite often around the camps and picnic sites you come across animals that are habituated to humans and spend their time ducking and diving for scraps of food. The bushbuck at Timbavati picnic spot and Letaba, the vervets at Nkhulu(and everywhere), the red winged starlings at Olifants and Letaba and the squirrels like this little guy. It ran around the tables gathering scraps on the stoep and then raced to the top of this pole and sat watching us whilst I struggled to get a shot due to the dim light up in the roof.

Well, technically they are not chipmunk, just common tree squirrel. Pet tree squirrels.
The owner feed them with milk and biscuits. And like kittens, they're always in the mood for playing and fooling around.
When I ask for his permission to take a photo, he said its okay and let them play on the cage. Only after I took several shots he mentions that he usually charge tourist $20 for taking photographs. LOL!

I was able to easily move up under this little squirrel and snap some pretty close shots, and although he knew I was there and occasionally eyeballed me, he truly only cared about getting to what I presume was his prospective mate who was sitting atop our house roof.

Eastern Fox Squirrels are an introduced species in Portland, far outside their natural range. They are better adapted to urban and suburban environments than the local native squirrel, the elegant and much shyer Western Gray which they far out-number in such places.

Last weekend, in the woodlands of the Botanic Gardens, we have seen some tourists sharing their chips with the squirrels. We'd already seen other animals (like seagulls and magpies) eating chips, but squirrels were a surprise. We expected the squirrels to sniff the chips and ignore them, but they actually ate them very quickly.
Eastern Grey Squirrels are not picky eaters; they will eat not only nuts, seeds and acorns, but also tree bark, berries, fungi, insects and bird eggs.
Just a note: basically, British chips are US French fries, while British crisps are US chips.

A tree squirrel , Callioscurus notatus, stop for a moment to check out on me during my trip to an orchard. This type of tree squirrel become a pest during fruit season .... they compete with the fruit tree owners for the valuable fruits. So, many of them end up being shot. I am glad that my kind of gun for shooting is my Canon camera.
