Both Kaibab and Abert squirrels tend to have this same distinctive coloration--dark fur, rusty strip down the back, and whitish tail. It took me until yesterday to learn why Kaibabs are a subspecies of Aberts. Kaibabs have dark bellies, whereas Aberts have white bellies. Obviously, this shot that I posted is meant to show the backside coloration, but if this had been an Abert, I think you could have seen white on the back (underside) of the front leg.
