An oak sapling stands in front of James Monroe High School in Fredericksburg City, Va., on June 13, 2023. Husband and wife, Carl and Anne Little began the nonprofit, Tree Fredericksburg, after receiving a grant to plant trees around a playground near their home. Since then, the nonprofit has had over 500 volunteers helping to increase tree canopy in Fredericksburg. The Chesapeake Bay Program released an Urban Tree Canopy Strategy in 2015 that aimed for a net gain of 2,400 acres of tree canopy in urban areas of the Bay by 2025.
