Joshua Tree National Park is an American national park in southeastern California, east of Los Angeles and San Bernardino, near Palm Springs. The park is named for the Joshua trees (Yucca brevifolia) native to the Mojave Desert. Originally declared a national monument in 1936, Joshua Tree was redesignated as a national park in 1994 when the U.S. Congress passed the California Desert Protection Act. Encompassing a total of 790,636 acres (1,235.4 sq mi; 3,199.6 km2)—an area slightly larger than the state of Rhode Island—the park includes 429,690 acres (671.4 sq mi; 1,738.9 km2) of designated wilderness. Straddling the border between San Bernardino County and Riverside County, the park includes parts of two deserts, each an ecosystem whose characteristics are determined primarily by elevation: the higher Mojave Desert and the lower Colorado Desert. The Little San Bernardino Mountains traverse the southwest edge of the park.

Here, I silhouetted the main Joshua tree and positioned it about one-third in from the left border. The lower more distant trees are minor compositional elements and break up the dark foreground rocks. I captured this images just as the sun set and the last rays lit up the clouds just above where the sun set. This bright spot of clouds adds another compositional element to the image.

When you see a sunset sky like this, you want to move quickly and get as many shots as possible, with as many foreground changes as you can. Don't just stand there in one place and snap away, move around! For this sunset, I positioned myself in an area that had a lot of terrain variation, both in the trees and the close and distant rocks. To get a better than average sunset or sunrise photograph, you need to be in the right place. You don't have any control over the clouds or the colors but you do have control over where you are and what is in your foreground.

I see many sunset images on Flickr that have truly spectacular skies and color. However, most often the photographer did not take the time to get a good foreground to go with that sky. A sunset or sunrise shot needs more than just the sky to get noticed.

A moment I am looking forward to year after year: the cherry tree by the side of our building blossoming full on. It is a sight to behold and today I passed under it and a strong breeze blew and when I got home I had plenty of petals in my hair ... a Spring moment :))

The majestic baobab tree is an icon of the African continent and lies at the heart of many traditional African remedies and folklore.

The baobab is a prehistoric species which predates both mankind and the splitting of the continents over 200 million years ago. Native to the African savannah where the climate is extremely dry and arid, it is a symbol of life and positivity in a landscape where little else can thrive. Over time, the Baobab has adapted to its environment. It is a succulent, which means that during the rainy season it absorbs and stores water in its vast trunk, enabling it to produce a nutrient-dense fruit in the dry season when all around is dry and arid. This is how it became known as "The Tree of Life".

I've noticed Mistletoe growing increasingly in UK trees, so I read up about it and learnt that it's due in part to an influx of continental blackcaps from Germany that have started overwintering in Britain, with many thousands now spending their winters here.

'Blackcaps are migratory warblers that are becoming regular winter visitors to our bird tables. Berries, including those of mistletoe, are an essential part of their diet. On eating the white flesh of the mistletoe berry, the birds wipe their bills on twigs and branches, leaving behind the seed. If the seed is deposited on a host tree and manages to take hold, a mistletoe plant might germinate on the branch. It seems that blackcaps are more efficient at spreading mistletoe seeds than other birds, such as the mistle thrush, which also feed on the berries.' - www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/blog/2018/12/where-does-mistleto....

'According to the Anglo-Saxons, kissing under the mistletoe was connected to the legend of Freya, Norse Goddess of love, beauty and fertility. According to legend, a man had to kiss any young girl who, without realizing it, found herself accidentally under a sprig of mistletoe hanging from the ceiling.' www.thewhitegoddess.co.uk/articles/mythology_folklore/mis....

Mike Oldfield ~ Incantations Part Four

my favorite season of the year, the smell of rotten leafs, the hard wind & rain, the days getting shorter and the nights getting colder, the complaining and the idea winter is on his way...

I just love it ;-)))))

I love trees. This special beauty was found on a hike near Lincoln City, Oregon

NOTE: It saddens me to not be on here much these days. I miss my Flickr friends =)

For those who might not yet know: my husband and I are caring for our 91-yr-old mom, so I am mostly using Flickr for a creative outlet and won't be able to do much commenting for a while.

From Easter day at Skylands Botanical Garden, New Jersey. It was a very large and stately tree, I think they are cherry blossoms.

This older man was slowly walking up the hill admiring the tree in his path. When he reached the tree he put his hands on the trunk and rested there for a while. This was taken in Lars Anderson park in Brookline, Massachusetts.
