More information about Kunming lake and the Summer Palace in Beijing can be found at my website: www.abookaboutchina.com/location/Summer-Palace
Kunming Lake (昆明湖) forms the centre of the Summer Palace gardens in Beijing, China. In fact, the lake takes up most of the parks area, covering 2.2 square kilometres or three quarters of the garden grounds. The lake is relativly shallow, with a depth of just 1.5 mtres. The lake is largely man made though a small pond existed on the site before development. The lake was created by Guo Shoujing, originally as a reservoir for the nearby capital, during the Yuan dynasty (1291). The area was converted into the imperial garden between 1750 and 1764, during the reign of Emperor Qianlong. Work was undertaken to expand the existing lake at that time. The spoil from excavating the lake was used to form the nearby Longevity Hill. The lake develops a thick lair of ice during the winter, during which time it can be used for skating. In the summer, a large number of small boats cover the lake.

While climate change has been causing some extremely high temperatures across much of the Northern Hemisphere, it seems to be causing an extra foggy (and slightly cooler) summer for us here in San Francisco. This last week I was trying to capture the fog in a few places around San Francisco and the Bay Area. Saturday I went up to Mount Tamalpais, across the Golden Gate, to catch it sinking into the heavily wooded valleys from a vantage point above it. I tried to make a bunch of long exposures, but something funky happed with my neutral density filter, so most of them are unusable. I salvaged a couple and have some photos that I captured at normal (fast) speed. Enjoy!

A piece of one of the most established oldest routes of Himachal Pradesh, The Sach Pass is tucked away in the Pir-Panjal ranges of the Himalayas in the Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh. The pass connects Pangi and Lahaul valleys with the Chamba valley. Sach Pass at a rise of 4,500 meters goes about as a scaffold between Pangi Valley and Chamba. Apparently Pangi valley is considered as one of the remotest locales in Himachal Pradesh.

The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Paris, commonly known as Sacré-Cœur Basilica and often simply Sacré-Cœur is a Roman Catholic church and minor basilica, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, in Paris, France. A popular landmark, the basilica is located at the summit of the butte Montmartre, the highest point in the city. Sacré-Cœur is a double monument, political and cultural, both a national penance for the excesses of the Second Empire and socialist Paris Commune of 1871 crowning its most rebellious neighborhood, and an embodiment of conservative moral order, publicly dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which was an increasingly popular vision of a loving and sympathetic Christ.

Here are some more shots from the SF Fleet Week airshow. Shooting from on top of Fort Point meant that I had a pretty good view of the San Francisco skyline. All of these photos feature the Blue Angels and the SF skyline (and one of Alcatraz). As you can see they really do fly directly over the city. During the Thursday "practice" and Friday show, the roaring from the engines as they fly by was very distracting while trying to work.
