I would guess about 50% of people know this, and I should not take it for granted that everyone does. But Yellowstone sits on top of a giant caldera, and it's due to go off any time (at least, geologically due!) If you look at a map of Yellowstone from above, you can see the clear outline of the caldera. When the mega-volcano strikes, it'll be a doozy!
The rest of this entry is here. There's also a review of the new Nikon 200-400mm lens and an interview at Trip Atlas! Full day!
Looking out from the jagged coastline of #FortWilliamsPark across the bay to Cushing Island, you can see the #PortlandFireDepartment trying to rescue someone. Mammoth Hot Springs is a large complex of hot springs on a hill of travertine in Yellowstone National Park adjacent to Fort Yellowstone and the Mammoth Hot Springs Historic District. It was created over thousands of years as hot water from the spring cooled and deposited calcium carbonate (over two tons flow into Mammoth each day in a solution). Because of the huge amount of geothermal vents, travertine flourishes. Although these springs lie outside the caldera boundary, their energy has been attributed to the same magmatic system that fuels other Yellowstone geothermal areas. The hot water that feeds Mammoth comes from Norris Geyser Basin after traveling underground via a fault line that runs through limestone and roughly parallel to the Norris-to-Mammoth road. The limestone from rock formations along the fault is the source of the calcium carbonate. Shallow circulation along this corridor allows Norris' superheated water to slightly cool before surfacing at Mammoth, generally at about 170 °F (80 °C). Algae living in the warm pools have tinted the travertine shades of brown, orange, red, and green. Thermal activity here is extensive both over time and distance. The thermal flows show much variability with some variations taking place over periods ranging from decades to days. Terrace Mountain at Mammoth Hot Springs is the largest known carbonate-depositing spring in the world. The most famous feature at the springs is the Minerva Terrace, a series of travertine terraces. The terraces have been deposited by the spring over many years but, due to recent minor earthquake activity, the spring vent has shifted, rendering the terraces dry. The Mammoth Terraces extend all the way from the hillside, across the Parade Ground, and down to Boiling River. The Mammoth Hotel, as well as all of Fort Yellowstone, is built upon an old terrace formation known as Hotel Terrace. There was some concern when construction began in 1891 on the fort site that the hollow ground would not support the weight of the buildings. Several large sink holes (fenced off) can be seen out on the Parade Ground. This area has been thermally active for several thousand years. The Mammoth area exhibits much evidence of glacial activity from the Pinedale Glaciation. The summit of Terrace Mountain is covered with glacial till, thereby dating the travertine formation there to earlier than the end of the Pinedale Glaciation. Several thermal kames, including Capitol Hill and Dude Hill, are major features of the Mammoth Village area. Ice-marginal stream beds are in evidence in the small, narrow valleys where Floating Island Lake and Phantom Lake are found. In Gardner Canyon one can see the old, sorted gravel bed of the Gardner River covered by unsorted glacial till. [Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mammoth_Hot_Springs]
Yellowstone National Park is a national park located in the U.S. states of Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho. It was established by the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Ulysses S. Grant on March 1, 1872. Yellowstone was the first National Park in the U.S. and is also widely held to be the first national park in the world. The park is known for its wildlife and its many geothermal features, especially Old Faithful Geyser, one of its most popular features. It has many types of ecosystems, but the subalpine forest is the most abundant. It is part of the South Central Rockies forests ecoregion. [Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellowstone_National_Park]

This is probably the most popular thing in Glenorchy to get a photo of. That was a sloppy sentence; sorry, you deserve better. Anyhoo, it's usually covered with people, especially if a Chinese tour bus drops off. This time it wasn't so bad, so I waited around for people to leave… enjoying the scene, watching those puffy clouds dance across the top of the barn.

I love Australia, but I also feel like there are a lot of things there that can kill you. I don’t like that part about Australia.
Here's a place I've always wanted to visit! I only was able to spend one afternoon here, but I'm keen to go back and get more photos. I actually got quite a few photos with the Quadcopter but haven't had time to go out and get them processed yet. Here's a fun fact… out there in the ocean is a “shark net” to make sure the sharks don't come eat humans. So, my word of advice is to stay on the beach-side of the shark net. Also, you should hope that sharks don't know how to jump nets.

Trisul is a group of three Himalayan mountain peaks of western Kumaun, with the highest reaching 7120m. The three peaks resemble a trident - in Hindi/Sanskrit, Trishula, trident, is the weapon of Shiva.

It was an amazing turnout! After the Google talk (which is being edited now), we all went over to Stanford for a mega-photowalk. Towards the end of the PhotoWalk, we ended up in this amazing area... here is my photo that I took... I think it was one of my last of the evening. Thanks again to everyone that came along :)

Here's a photo I've only recently processed even though the last flight of the space shuttle was quite a long time ago. I felt very lucky to go out to the launch pad on the final night… I felt like I was in a science fiction movie. Unfortunately, tripods were not allowed (why?), so I had to keep my unsteady hands as steady as possible!

I assume there are a few Game of Thrones fans in the audience? I visited this place in Morocco several years before they started making the show. I was actually reading the books at the time and thinking, wow, this would make an awesome set for Daenerys to recruit her army. So you can imagine my surprise when I saw it appear in the actual series. Also, some of you may remember this place from the Gladiator movie too. I think it's where Russell Crowe was taken away to in the beginning of the movie.

Taken on 25.08.2020, Moon provides the best linkage to Earth’s early history. It offers an undisturbed historical record of the inner Solar system environment. Though there are a few mature models, the origin of Moon still needs further explanations. Extensive mapping of lunar surface to study variations in lunar surface composition is essential to trace back the origin and evolution of the Moon. Evidence for water molecules discovered by Chandrayaan-1, requires further studies on the extent of water molecule distribution on the surface, below the surface and in the tenuous lunar exosphere to address the origin of water on Moon.
The lunar South Pole is especially interesting because of the lunar surface area here that remains in shadow is much larger than that at the North Pole. There is a possibility of the presence of water in permanently shadowed areas around it. In addition, South Pole region has craters that are cold traps and contain a fossil record of the early Solar System.

Probably less than 2 miles short of the Premier Mines viewpoint where you can see right up to the icefield that forms the head of the Salmon Glacier, I turned around.
There was supposed to be pavement on this road, but the last pavement I saw was when I crossed back over from Alaska to Canada, and most of Hyder was dirt roads to begin with. The loose gravel, cold temperatures, and overcast were just becoming too much.
It was time to make like the geese and head south.
A beautiful view of the Albaicín with the Church of San Nicolás in the distance. No visit to the south of Spain is complete until you have visited one of Andalusia’s most unique neighborhoods, the charming Arabic quarter filled with Muslim influence. The Albaicín, is located in the city of Granada, across the Darro River from the Alhambra fortress and palace. This Moorish “barrio” is just one of the many treasures of traveling through Andalusia and southern Spain.

After the overly expensive and entirely unsatisfying breakfast, I nestled myself at the bottom of the ski runs for some action shots. I couldn't figure out which one was best, so I made a collage.
This is where my Russian friend first produced a bottle of cognac from his inside breast pocket. And it was not a small bottle.
Even more baffling, during at least ten other major photography moments, he would pull a brand new cognac bottle from a different pocket. He was like a clown with endless streams of hidden tardis-like pockets. On one of the final nights of the hike, in fact, we were running low on food and there was nothing to drink. Upon hearing this, he simply raised his eyebrows and pulled out three full bottles of cognac and set them upon a log.
This is the Perito Moreno Glacier, and this thing is over two miles wide. Unfortunately, everything is so huge in the photo that you can't get a sense of the scale. When you see huge chunks cleave off, it all happens in slow motion, just like the movies. And the sound is like an icy thunder.
