The large and dramatic transformation mask created by Kwakwaka'wakw artist Stan Wamiss depicts Raven, cultural hero and trickster, as its outer being, visible when the mask is in its closed position, and the fearsome-looking Bak'was as its inner being, revealed when the mask is open. Transformation masks, whose inner and outer faces vary widely according to the story being enacted, are worn by ceremonial dancers. They convey, in a dynamic and theatrical way, the act of transforming from one being or condition of existence into another.

Hydrant Challenge: In the "you just can't make this stuff up" category ... I hopped in the golf cart a little while ago to scope out some other interesting hydrants. I took a photo of one in purple and another in lime green. A car followed me around a block, honked and pulled up next to me; apparently one of the people in the 'hood who's doing some painting (I thought some of them looked kind of freshly done). We talked for a bit, and he went on. A few blocks later, what do I see but someone actually transforming one of the hydrants. (The guy's wife, I think. He never said she was out painting, so who knows.) I told her about my photo challenge and asked to take some shots. She obliged. Anyway, thank you, hydrant people!

I have so many horse pics that I took down in FL that I love SOOC, this was absolutely not one of them (see original below). But there was something about the shot that drew me in - I think it's how you can see the muscle mass this horse has or that beautiful mane in the wind - so I wanted to play with it and give it a painterly look and now I love it! (full screen on black is best way to view!)

sometimes i fear actually allowing myself to feel things as deeply as i do... i have always been strong and stoic and energetic and...happy. i keep things going for everyone around me, chin up, stay positive, keep moving.
but sometimes? sometimes i am terribly angry, sorrowful, unreasonably fearful, weak, stuck. aka: human.
i figure every day out as it comes. we all do, no matter how much we plan ahead. allowing myself grace to truly feel the range of my emotion, my heart...it gives me more compassion for everyone around me, right where they are in their journey, too.
we are emotional, spiritual, silly creatures. and we are Loved for it.
and i so love that we are all on this journey together.

I had to put this together from two 'hatchings' several weeks apart because once it's time for the ladybird to emerge it all happens in minutes.
I followed the first larva and pupa for days and missed stage three. This time I was watching three pupae so I had a little warning..........and still missed it.
It takes a few hours for their spots to develop.
