CPL in use at a training exercise

Every Roman fort along Hadrian’s Wall, as well as elsewhere, had a parade ground where soldiers could train and parade for the inspection of the prefect.

On one side was a raised platform known as a tribunal, from which the prefect could inspect the troops. Alters and shrines to Jupiter, Mars and Victory would flank these platforms. Parade grounds might have had stakes set up on them. These were about the height of a man and against which the soldiers would practice using their weapons.

This scene depicts some of the Auxiliary units who were present on Hadrian’s Wall during the late second century / early third century AD. Auxillia were originally formed from frontier populations to fight in their homelands, using their local knowledge. However, following such events as the Revolt of the Batavi in AD 69, they were relocated to other parts of the Empire.

The infantry dressed in green are the Cohors I Tungorum Millaria, who were originally raised from the Tungri of Gallia Belgica (the area we know call Belgium). It fought under Agricola at the Battle of Mons Graupius in 83 AD and were stationed at Housteads following its reconstruction by Septimius Severus.

Archers were usually eastern in origin. During the second century the Cohors Hamiorum Sagittariorum were also thought to be stationed at Housesteads, The cohort was made up of Hamians, who were a Syrian tribe.

The cavalry are of the Cohors II Tungorum Millaria Equitata, who like the I Tungorum Millaria were ere originally raised from the Tungri. It is though the unit spent most of the second century stationed at Birrens, but by 241 AD had moved to Castlesteads.

Much like the last scene I posted (see here), this MOC probably has more to do showing off my army as it is about building. I have 20 light infantry, 8 cavalry and 7 archers.

I'm teaching him how to take a photo. He loves it but for the 3 year-old kid, I can't let him play alone with the digital camera. hehehe I gave him a Lomo Diana and loaded the film for him and he loves it too. Just can't wait too see the result. Now he knows that if the camera has no film, it can't take a photo. ^_^'

"I joined the Marine Corps in 42' right after Pearl Harbor. I guess I was pretty worked up then about what the Japanese did. Everyone was. Call it whatever you want. Anger,

patriotism, stupidity. All I know is that I'm here now.

The sergeant took us recruits out to the range today. He has seemed to take a particular disliking to me for some reason. While I was doing some close range shooting with a 1911, he just stood there, glaring at me. Luckily I withstood the pressure of his gaze and got all the rounds on target. Our intense training is nearing the end. But that just means we'll be heading off to something far more strenuous. Real combat."

Back at the Air Force Academy now.....the day I took the shots of the plane replicas. There were numerous groups of the cadets going through their training. It was most interesting.

Batumi is an important Georgian sea port and resort city on the eastern shoreline of the Black Sea, known as 'Las Vegas of the Black Sea'. The bridge of the Georgian Training Vessel Cadet (IMO 7634202), operated by the Batumi State Maritime Academy, is seen here at the Batumi Marine Station wharf.

Wrestling is one of the most popular sports in Senegal. People start training from a rather young age. This group was there every evening with the same trainer.

Seen parked (yes, a little further from the kerb than I wanted, but still acceptable) on Cob Drive in Swan Valley after my first hour driving a bus. This Dart is usually a spare training vehicle, but for my first week of training the regular bus for my instructor (22374) was in for MOT prep. Luckily for me this meant that I got to sample driving a Dart, which the depot I was due to be based at didn't have any of. Honestly, it was a really nice bus to drive, and starting in a fairly small bus like this and going to a 12m bus (the MAN) was a good stepping stone. 34627 is one of two Darts in the training fleet at Northampton, the other being 34626 (OPA).

Stagecoach Midlands' KX54 OPB (34627) is seen on Cob Drive, Northampton, while performing driver training duties. This livery only seems to be on the Midlands training vehicles, with other divisions having either standard livery, or unique liveries. KX54OPB was new in November 2004 to Stagecoach Midland Red South's Nuneaton depot, for use on the 48 (Coventry - Nuneaton - Atherstone, or Hinckley & Leicester. The front panel has a filled in section from its days branded for the 48. Normally 34627 is based at Northampton for use as a spare training bus, however, during this week it was on loan to Nuneaton. It is a Dennis Dart SLF/Plaxton Pointer 2.
