Sunday morning, member of Santa Barbara County Fire participated in a training drill in the construction zone behind the Santa Catalina Dorms at UCSB. The drill simulated a fully involved, three story, wood framed structure that was under construction. Along with helping firefighters to keep up on techniques, the drill also allowed units to familiarize themselves with the new structures and placement of hydrants.

Ells street, studies a ship's wheel and compass in a class room at the UIS Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Illinois. Roney, a member of Champaign's Naval Reserve facility, is receiving a 2-week's special 'boot training' that presents the highlights of seamanship, gunnery, firefighting and military drill taught to regular Navy men in 11 weeks of 'recruit camp.' At the end of the reserve recruit course, Roney will return to civilian life. Next year he will take part in more advanced training aboard one of the ships in the Great Lakes squadron."

Fort Picket, VA- The 448th EN BN is currently conducting annual training at Fort Picket VA. The Battalion has Command and Control of several units including, 461st Engineer Company from North Dakota, 1018th Quarter Master Company from New York, 108th Quarter Master Company form Fort Lee VA and a Korean Support Company. Their training mission consists of installing 20.5 miles of pipeline across the training facility. So far the mission has run without any mayor injuries; the battalion is scheduled to complete their mission and return to home station by the end of the month. In World War II, the Seabees built the Navy’s bases around the world and paved the roads to victory in the Atlantic, Alaskan and Pacific Theaters with their innumerable construction skills. Their accomplishments during the war are legendary including building over 400 advance bases, 111 major airfields, 441 piers, 2,558 ordnance magazines, hospitals to serve 70,000 patients, and housing for 1.5 million men. Nearly 325,000 men, master artisans and the most proficient of the nation's skilled workers, paved the road to victory for the allies in the Pacific and in Europe. They served on four continents, more than 300 islands, suffered more than 300 combat deaths, and earned more than 2,000 purple hearts.
The skills and experiences of normal fleet personnel were inadequate for land construction and a program for recruiting men skilled in construction work had begun with an attempt to interest older experienced men that might contribute their skills and experience.
Since recruiting produced a body of skilled tradesmen, there was little need for trade school training early on, but the lack of military experience indicated that military and tactical training be emphasized. In addition, training was required for small groups of specialists in each battalion on the operation and maintenance of pontoon gear, stills and purifiers, and mobile generators.
