i decided to add queen anne's lace to my wildflower garden. so i took a bucket and shovel to the nearest railroad. (isn't it interesting how this flower grows around all train tracks?). as i put shovel to ground, an older man walked toward me.

him: what are you doing?

me: digging up queen anne's lace for my garden.

him: you can't do that!

me: oh, is there an ordinance against this?

him: no, but that thing is a weed. you don't want it. it'll grow up all over your yard.

me: well, i think it's pretty.

him: fine, do whatever you want.

i think human perceptions are interesting. what's a flower versus a weed? what is beauty? what is kindness? we hold many different views. each day i see or learn something new.

The old Reading train station still stands along the tracks in Palmyra, although it's railroad use has moved from 1:1 to 1:48, selling model trains mostly in O gauge. Passing the station on this warm evening was Norfolk Southern train Z3V, an extra section of the New Jersey trash express heading for an Ohio landfill with containers of the Garden State's finest leftovers.

AFT 1 was attempting to make its way to Navy Pier along with the rest of the train. After a couple derailments it was decided to not take the engine past this point. The engine was re-railed and sent west, possibly to EMD while the train was on display. Photo was taken on 7-28-75 by Lee Hastman.

When taking coal to the power station at Hegang, the SY had a stiff climb to lift it's loaded train over the China Rail main line. Despite three or four visits there, I never really understood the system, and even in the present day with the obliging Mr Google, I struggle to work out where we used to go. Currently on our way to Kaohsiung, in southern Taiwan, where we will spend the next couple of days.

Casablanca.........it was an eventful 24 hours, i will never forget.

in the event of looking for a cafe to get some rest and get some food, i was held under a knife point.

the story goes... i had my backpack (my new camera bag) in front of me, like carry it backward. it was a pretty big bag so it basically came up to my chin. i rested my arms on top of the bag my right hand is holding my little baby Ricoh.

A 6'-0" + tall man came up to me and try to take my Ricoh and point a knife at me. Lucky i did not get hurt, my Ricoh is also safe with me. i might be just lucky, or people around me was nice enough to help me out by telling the guy to leave us alone. in any case even now i can't imagine what he could have done to me with his knife.

the next morning we decided to leave Casablanca because we were little uncomfortable and beside there is really nothing there to see. ... Remember even the famous movie "Casablanca" did not even film here.

We headed to the train station early in the morning, an elderly woman who pretended to help us, while we don't need any help, she tried to take our ticket away by telling us we were in the wrong class.

Was it because it was 2 Asian females traveling, or am i being careless. Or do i have to say i need a "boy" after all.

btw, my first meal in Morocco was in the Hyatt Hotel, the safest place and the closest place we found.

Train trip #23

Jasper National Park

Canada

A large number of passengers got off the train at Jasper, most were from a tour group (about 40 people) who'd been on the train since Toronto. They'd be spending about 4 days in Jasper and Banff before heading by bus to Vancouver then Victoria. The train would seem quiet without this group of Brits, Aussies and Americans.

Jasper is supposed to be a 1.5 hour stop but since we were 24 hours behind schedule they cut the stop down to 45 minutes. It was plenty of time to take some pictures and go across the street to some gift shops and a little sandwich shop for something to tide me over til dinnertime.

These carriages have been around for a long time and the yellow Pullman car contains the Queen, who might also be said to be a bit weathered and worn.
