West Texas A&M takes the Women's Championship while Saint Augustine's adds their fifth straight.

This is the view from the down platform at Southend Central Station, England, looking east. After the station, the track is on a gentle downward slope, something I had not noticed when on the train (I'm not a train or railway anorak). Taken in 2004.

Here's a little different view of Test Track. Looking straight up at the exit from the gift. A close look will show an upside-down ride vehicle passing by in the upper left.

That train sitting there was just idling.

Single-arm, motorized barndoor tracker. Arm is twice the usual length for 1/4-inch drivescrew. Motor spins at 2 RPM, rather than 1 RPM. Goal is to reduce periodic error by doubling the size.

This barndoor tracker was retired about 2005, but the parts (other than the tripod and Wimberly gimbal mount) were still assembled until 2015. This mount was completely dismantled in July 2015. The long RRS camera bar is now part of a macro copy stand.

These are the tracks at the East Anglian Railway Museum at Chappel & Wakes Colne Station. The track on the left is in use on the Marks Tey to Sudbury Line which is known as The Gainsborough Line.

Track reconstruction at Dundas and Broadview. Toronto streetcar tracks have a unique gauge: four feet 10 7/8 inches, about two inches wider than the usual international standard. It's not clear why, according to the Spacing book 25 Toronto Transit Secrets. That's just how we roll

Running 100 minutes late, this Network Rail track maintenance machine had run from Stafford and was destined for Horsham. It is seen near Betchworth with the chalk cliffs of the North Downs behind.

Territory

I spent a good deal of my youth on and around these tracks. To the left and out of frame is Alex Sanger Elementary. To the right and following the tracks into the distance is a creek. About a mile down the tracks is W.H. Gaston Junior High.

From 1976 to 1981 I knew this strip of ground better than anyone. It was my territory. At school I felt terrorized, but here, I was safe. I owned this place. But like all the territories of adolescence, someone else owns it now.

An urban photo for this week's Sunday Landscape. Like everything else in town, Galveston's transport infrastructure suffered badly during Hurricane Ike in 2008. I've mentioned before that railroad freight traffic is very much alive and well in America. However you wouldn't know it from these seemingly abandonned freight yards. I suspect much more government money went into getting the road network up and running again rather than the railroads.

(Aside : Yesterday's local news headline featured BP being fined $4.5billion dollars for their disastrous 2010 Gulf oil disaster. Call me cycnical but I wonder where lots of that money might end up going????? By the way, BP made a miserly $25.8billion profit in 2011)

The blue track should be light grey for the best effect but I don't own any at the moment so only blue track.

My eldest competed in his school track meet today, running in the 100m dash and in the anchor position of the 4x100 relay. They didn't win, but he was awfully proud of himself. I was, too!

From Uelzen the fist train was too crowded but we got the1030hrs to Hamburg (opposite). This was the first impression and really a bit flattering, particularly around the dock area, everything was very dirty. It was here that we had to change trains to head for Copenhagen at 1335hrs.
