My best Toyota find so far, the 4Runner. For me, the 4Runner looks like a smaller Land Cruiser J80, but it's a Hilux with a hatch. It has a 2.4L turbodiesel engine, capable of doing 90 HP and 210 Nm torque. This example has on the roof some camping stuff, which means the family went to camping in the Brătioara Trout Hotel in Cândești.
This is a 5th generation model, it's still sold without major changes. These were very common in early 2010s. Despite the name not all models came with a 4x4 system.
Brand new 2023 Matchbox 2018 Toyota 4Runner which apart from its expected small size, Mattel Metal Diet, is a decent offering as far as the low price point will allow.

I've been looking for dark-sky places closer to home in the Greater Los Angeles area, so I tried the Kennedy Meadow campground in the southern Eastern Sierra. It wasn't cloudy when I settled in but that changed as I started my exercise. And I did some dumb things - out of practice I guess - forgot my tape that I use on the lens to hold manual focus position, sleeping bag, and my tent that I use for a prop. Couldn't find my cable release/intervalometer. But I did have some neon glow sticks in the car, so ... BTW, the light pollution continues to amaze me. I really couldn't see the light at the horizon till I took my first image. Wow. I believe this is facing due south so this should be from Mojave, Antelope Valley, Los Angeles.
Brand new for 2023 is the Matchbox 2018 Toyota 4Runner, a rather ugly looking SUV though is I believe rather popular in the States and probably explains why they have included one in their range. A decent stock looking affair with front and rear detailing.

I am of the opinion that there are few better subjects for photos than the proliffic example of machinery that is ... the 4Runner.
I really wanted to get a picture of one on a beach at night, and being in Colorado, I happened to lack a beach. So I drove down to South Padre Island, TX. Just a quick jaunt. Though I figured while I was snappin a pic or two, I might as well spend the week kitesurfing!
This was taken on the main strip of sand north of the city of South Padre. We spent a few days sleeping on the sand behind the truck. With near 100% humidity, blowing sand all night, and no tent, it wasn't exactly ideal. But still pretty fun!
This night, there were miles of partying caravans (lights in the distance) driving back and forth by our spot all night. Later we found out that there is a lot of Cartel activity down there, and that our camp spots weren't exactly safe either. Maybe we shoulda researched this a little bit!

As we pulled up to the school drop-off lane in the Audi R8 and the 5th grade greeters fought over who would open the door to let my 6 year-old son out, my son said, “These kids must think my life is awesome because I come to school in three cool cars.” I explained to my little kindergartner that even if we didn’t have those 3 vehicles, his life is still awesome. He said, “Yeah.”
Another 50p Matchbox 2018 Toyota 4Runner found recently at Poundland before this mistake was discovered and corrected.

Seemingly Poundland have realised their mistake at pricing their stocks of Matchbox at the ridiculously low price of 50p but not before I managed to grab a whole basket full! They are now back to 1.50 which is still very good value with batches 2021 E, and 2023 B and D being spotted.
50p gets me this very likeable 2018 Toyota 4Runner which is brand new for this year and already has a new recolour appearing imminently.

Brand new Matchbox 2018 Toyota 4Runner which has been clearly put on a metal diet/designed to fit in standard packaging. The real vehicle is quite large but you certainly don't get that impression here!

The highways and byways of the Pacific Northwest both offer some incredible views, but there is something to be said about hitting the backroads and exploring some new (to me at least) territory.

I camped at this same exact spot last time I went skiing at Red Lodge. This time nobody else was here at this free campground.

The Toyota 4Runner is a compact, later a mid-size sport utility vehicle built 1983-09, over five generation, also known as the Toyota Hi-Lux or Hi-Lux Srf
The third generarion was developed under chief designer Masaaki Ishiko nder the project code 185T, with an all new body shell and chassis, sharing many of its parts, including engine and transmission, with the new Tacoma pick up truck. Despite moving upmarket with the rest of the mid-size SUV market, the new 4Runner differentiated itself by retaining the rugged off-road characteristics. Significant changes from the second generation models include a larger body on a longer wheelbase, increased interior space, increased cargo space, dual airbags, ABS, lift-up tailgate, coil-spring suspension all around, rack and pinion steering, and aerodynamic contour designed glass headlights.
In 1996, the 4Runner was dropped from sale in the UK, to be replaced by the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, which was badged as the Toyota Land Cruiser Colorado., but contued in Japan until 2002, with many coming to the UK as personal or grey imports.
The 1997 model year received a few minor updates, including the addition of a colour keyed cargo cover.

The UK now has more official Matchbox retailers than it has for several years yet strangely they are all stuck in this strange loop of early 2023 batches! Nobody has gone past Case D and nobody has bothered to offer anything but basic singles and multi-packs. Add to the fact that many are now charging over 2.00 for them and its easy to see why sales appear to be stalling!
At least Poundland have the decency of only charging 1.50 for their stocks of Case B and D which is why I couldn't help grabbing another Toyota 4Runner, definitely still one of the more desirable castings from this mix.
