At one point while exploring Chloride City, we split up to look a better way to access an area we wanted to get to. Chris ended up here. He mentioned having a hard time getting turned around due to the slope.
I believe Andrew, Chris' friend, took this photo.

This is kinda how I feel on Monday mornings.
The Umpqua National Forest is impressive for a lot of reasons. There a numerous waterfalls, great hikes, and 138 follows the namesake river up to Diamond Lake and Mt. Thielsen with Crater Lake not too far past that. There is a web of back roads that wind through the forest, leading to all sorts of cool spots. Some however end like this. While this was the end of the road for this route, we turned around and found some other really beautiful viewpoints. Regardless, maybe I should do my part to help the forest service and start packing a chainsaw.

I posted a number of my photos from this last trip on a 4Runner forum that I go on, and one of the people who replied was retired from the film industry, and had done some work with automotive commercials. He gave me some tips, and told me of all the photos I'd posted of my 4Runer, this one was his favorite, and he gave me a couple reasons why.
I've always been drawn to the photos and stories of the British, "Long Range Desert Group", and the "Special Air Service" that operated in North Africa in WWII. They had stowage and Jerry cans strapped all over their trucks and jeeps, and they were a big part of the inspiration for my 4Runner "build". I think this photo helps capture a little of that feel. On a funny note, I had to crop it in quite a bit to get rid of patches of snow on the ground. I think most people who have spent some time in the deserts of the world understand that deserts can and do get snow, but it just takes away from the overall look. Haha
Another fun glamor shot of my 4Runner. This time in the desert near where the Colorado River becomes Lake Powell.
I believe this is a 1955 Porsche 356. This car was designed for racing and street. It has a very austere, spartan interior. Because of the Arizona Historic Vehicle license plate and Barrett-Jackson frame, I believe that it is a original and not a replica. Replicas are very popular. This Porsche was parked next to my 4Runner in the office garage. Any correction will be appreciated.

The Porsche 356 is a sports car that was first produced by Austrian company Porsche Konstruktionen GesmbH (1948–1949), and then by German company Dr. Ing. h. c. F. Porsche GmbH (1950–1965). It was Porsche's first production automobile.
The 356 is a lightweight and nimble-handling, rear-engine, rear-wheel drive, two-door available both in hardtop coupé and open configurations. Engineering innovations continued during the years of manufacture, contributing to its motorsports success and popularity. Production started in 1948 at Gmünd, Austria, where Porsche built approximately 50 cars. In 1950 the factory relocated to Zuffenhausen, Germany, and general production of the 356 continued until April 1965, well after the replacement model 911 made its September 1964 debut. Of the 76,000 originally produced, approximately half survive.[2]
The 356 was created by Ferdinand "Ferry" Porsche (son of Ferdinand Porsche, founder of the German company), who founded the Austrian company with his sister, Louise. Like its cousin, the Volkswagen Beetle (which Ferdinand Porsche Sr. had designed), the 356 is a four-cylinder, air-cooled, rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive car with unitized pan and body construction. The chassis was a completely new design, as was the 356's body, designed by Porsche employee Erwin Komenda. At the same time, certain mechanical components, including the engine case and some suspension components, were based on and initially sourced from Volkswagen. Ferry Porsche described the thinking behind the development of the 356 in an interview with the editor of "Panorama", the PCA magazine, in September 1972. "...I had always driven very speedy cars. I had an Alfa Romeo, also a BMW, and others. ….By the end of the war, I had a Volkswagen Cabriolet with a supercharged engine, and that was the basic idea. I saw that if you had enough power in a small car, it is nicer to drive than if you have a big car which is also overpowered. And it is more fun. On this basic idea, we started the first Porsche prototype. To make the car lighter, to have an engine with more horsepower…that was the first two-seater that we built in Carinthia (Gmünd)".
By the early 1950s the 356 had gained some renown among enthusiasts on both sides of the Atlantic for its aerodynamics, handling, and excellent build quality. The class win at Le Mans in 1951 was a factor.[9] It was common for owners to race the car as well as drive them on the streets. They introduced the four-cam racing "Carrera" engine, a totally new design and unique to Porsche sports cars, in late 1954. Increasing success with its racing and road cars brought Porsche orders for over 10,000 units in 1964, and by the time 356 production ended in 1965 approximately 76,000 had been produced.[2]

After getting over and around Chicken Rock, you have to get past one more rocky section. As in most photos, the severity of the problem does not translate. Chris did well in his Toyota. He took his time, followed spotting direstions, and only beat the crap outs his rig in a coupld of shots! Never take a Toyota on a Jeep road! :-)
Actually, he did just fine and only scrapped a couple of places.
