We are lucky to live in Carbondale, where the 2017 and 2024 eclipse path formed the "X". We are at the point where the two paths crosses.

In under 7 years, I didn't have to travel to see totality, whereas the solar eclipse came knocking at my door. The least I could do is get some nice gear to photograph its beauty! Please enjoy the experience with me!

At the start of totality. Solar filter was off.

During post processing, the use of cloud white balance setting gives warm look to the glow, but we decided to leave it to daylight.

I also took the time looking up at the Sun. It was majestic. Almost like a religious experience.

Viewing the Solar Eclipse in Salem, NH with my co-workers. My company made special t-shirts for the event. Music and snacks and free solar glasses made it a memorable event!

I brought a few homemade viewers to use since I didn't have the right solar filter for my camera. My cereal box viewer was great. But my favorite photo was of the shadows of the crescent as it was filtered through the tree branches onto a white plastic picnic table!

Total solar eclipse from Maple Falls, Texas. We had lots of clouds and could not see the start of totality, but did get about one minute of totality in patches, when the clouds thinned, over the approximately 4.5 minutes duration. The clouds added some "atmosphere".

Beyond its astronomical wonder and humanity biggest achievement of predicting solar eclipses. Do you know how complicated mathematically to figure all that out to the seconds? You literally have to know the diameters, distance, angles of the shadows, and the orbital mechanics of Earth, moon, and sun system all into one complicated equation.

The total solar eclipse holds a spiritual significance to understand your own connection with the universe. Connect with ancient wisdom like our ancestors did.

My setup. 60D is used because it is the only DSLR that I have with an articulated screen. An articulated screen is a must.

The Sigma 150-600mm C is a great lens. It is not too heavy and sharp enough. Both the zoom ring and focus ring are tight but smooth enough. It is difficult to accidentally change the setting.

The solar filter is a threaded one from Thousand Oaks Optical.

A diamond ring flanked by some rubies!

The prominence eruptions at the south and east position is still going strong!

[As you go through the next few photos, do keep an eye out on the prominences at both the 6- and 3-o'clock positions (south and east, respectively).

Within the 4-min of totality, you can observe their eruptions. The one at 6 o'clock is so bright that it can be seen with the naked eyes! The prominence eruption at 3 o'clock is of a lesser intensity.]

The Exclipse 04/08/2024

Today is the big day of the Solar Eclipse that will be visible across a wide path of North America. At the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor), there were numerous events. The beautiful weather and the fact that the next one will be in this area some twenty years from now brought many people about. The eclipse in Ann Arbor was almost a total one, around 98% coverage of the sun. For totality, you had to go to Ohio. It was nice to participate in an activity that we all experienced at the same time. When the eclipse was at its greatest coverage of the sun, there were cheers in the Law Quad. Pictures on Monday April 8th, 2024.

Taken in my backyard. Actual focal length was 340mm - a Sigma 70-200/f2.8 with 1.7x teleconverter.

New London Reservoir, Ohio 3:14 PM

I knew that clouds will make focusing difficult, both manual live view and auto focus. So I started my setup around 10 am to get the focus right using auto focus. All focus points were active. After camera gave me the successful focus signal via live view, I switched the lens to manual focus. Since accidentally turning the Sigma 150-600 mm C focus ring is difficult, this action basically locked my focus setting. I only need to worry about the tripod head azimuth and elevation angle from this point on.

Even though camera is on a tripod, I had image stabilizer turned on. This is due to the fact that tripod is standing on concrete slab. And there were other people observing the eclipse. They can be a source of vibrations.

All these were learned during 2023 from many practice sessions. The 2033 annular eclipse was a dress rehearsal. The only thing I would add is to clean the sensor.

I took a peek inside of a family member’s Triscuit box pinhole camera and saw the tiny crescent!

The closest I got to catching the diamond ring of Eclipse 2024. While I was cursing the clouds at the time, they do add a lot of drama and colour. This might in fact be one of my favourite captures of the event.
