This Big Boy was defending his turf against three Hummers who wanted to share breakfast.
Hummingbirds are small, colorful birds with iridescent feathers. Their name comes from the fact that they flap their wings so fast (about 80 times per second) that they make a humming noise.
Hummingbirds can fly right, left, up, down, backwards, and even upside down. They are also able to hover by flapping their wings in a figure-8 pattern.
They have a specialized long and tapered bill that is used to obtain nectar from the center of long, tubular flowers.
The hummingbird’s feet are used for perching only, and are not used for hopping or walking.
Hummingbirds primarily eat flower nectar, tree sap, insects and pollen.
The hummingbird’s fast breathing rate, fast heartbeat and high body temperature require that they eat often. They also require an enormous amount of food each day.
Hummingbirds have a long tongue which they use to lick their food at a rate of up to 13 licks per second.
It is difficult to estimate population numbers since there are many different species spanning a large geographic area.
Hummingbirds are found only in the Western Hemisphere, from southeastern Alaska to southern Chile, although most live in the tropics. There are more than 300 species of hummingbirds, 12 of which summer in North America and winter in tropical areas.
Like other birds, hummingbirds communicate via visual displays. Hummingbirds are very territorial and have been observed chasing each other and even larger birds such as hawks away from their territories.

This was one of the first pictures I started taking of Asha I know the picture quality isn't really there as I was just using a little compact and I knew even less about photography then than I do now...lol. I always thought this picture cute regardless of the quality. It makes me smile anyway Asha with her Top Dog outfit on. This was taken in Ward Park Bangor of the Deck Gun taken from a German Submarine.
Anxious little Red Squirrel taking a brief scavenging break to survey its domain and check for predators. Last week, two hawks visited my garden for a few minutes. They did not score, so moved on. There's a good chance they'll be back.
Common and abundant.
This is a macro shot of a toy car depicting the show Top Gear (for macro mondays). Here's a link to a picture of me holding the car if you don't believe me!
This two-inch tall wooden finger top came with instructions for games to play, with points based on where the top lands when it stops. And when there's money on the line, it can be nerve wracking to watch the thing spin! :-)

Unless you're prepared to put in some serious leg work, theres not many places in the Lake District where you get an unobstructed sunset, Big Mountains get in the way. They do however cast interesting shadows on their neighbours giving them Golden tops in the late afternoon winter sun.
The bright colours were what drew me to this composition, along with the leading line created by the flowing beck, and the billowing clouds against a rare blue sky. A different view of Buttermere...

The "White Big Top" is a temporary structure on Toronto's Port Lands under which Cavalia presents it's production of Odysseo. This is a view of "Cavalia village" from a pier to the south during the "blue hour". Distillery District condominiums (home) rise in the distance behind the gigantic tent. It's definitely an eye-catcher for those driving along the elevated Gardiner Expressway or Lakeshore Blvd. just east of the downtown core.

Just standing outside here for minute freezes you to bits. But our new plans helps warm us up. There has been recent activity in North and South Africa both with the Sharp Sky Associates, and with the North African Resistance, a bit too much activity. Thus, far away up in the Alps we make plans to productively reduce to issues in Africa. However we must always keep our post and lookout to oncoming attacks as of our current knowledge this base is only known to top members of the EU. However on wrong sentence and the word spills like water.

I'm pretty happy with this as it's my first dio. There are some parts that could have been done better, but I though I'd just finish it so i could move on to some other plans
The flat hill in the distance is a marvelous formation that can be recognised from miles away. Just to the south of it is located the historic 77 ranch first owned by Peck and Converse. Mike Shonsey of the Johnson County Range War was employed by the 77 ranch. www.wheeler-roots.org/histories/history-shonsey.php
In his book,The long trail from Texas, Ad Spaugh talks of burying a couple children who live with thier mother in a cabin east of Flat Top that took sick and died. They were buried on a pine knoll nearby Flat Top by a crew of sad cowboys.
My Grandmother who knew Ad and sadly recalled visiting with him about the burial. She told me of it before I had ever read the book many years later. Exciting and hard times...

I was amazed to see a big bird on top of the trimmed trees. I needed a telelens to discover it was a goose! Can you imagine?

Taking in the sea air on the top deck of the Stena Europe superferry. I travelled from Ireland to the UK last week to visit friends & family, my first time back in 10 years. Home now but I'm feeling a little jaded so you'll have to bear with me while I try to catch up on comments in the coming days.
The life jackets are stored in these benches & the lifeboats are hanging over the side. There is actually a walking route around the deck, 4 laps = 1km. Great idea to pass the time HBM!
