purple-toothed polypore: (Trichaptum biforme) AKA: purple tooth or violet-toothed polypore
Coal Center (Washington County), Pennsylvania
Not sure what the white fungus is, but I believe the purple is T. biforme, which is said to be one of the most common species of fungi in our area. The colony shown here were growing, I believe, on a dead wild cherry tree (Prunus serotina).
The log was horizontal, but this section of the log was about three feet (1 m) above the ground. I shot the lower images laying on my back beneath the log to reveal the fruiting bodies growing on the underside of the log. The part of the colony on the underside of the log was fairly large, perhaps 12x18 inches (30-46 cm). While I see T. biforme fairly often, this is the only time I saw it quite like this. Reminds me of the carpet anemone I sometimes see displayed in marine aquaria.
The original owner of this tooth was quite fierce, but hasn't bitten in a very long time. Found at Calvert Cliffs, MD.

A rare tooth crown from the Pliosaur Polyptychodon. Middle or upper cenomanian. This is the imprint of the tooth on the matrix. It is a very clear imprint and shows the tooth had missing enamel when preserved. It probably rolled around on the sea floor for some time prior to preservation.

a re-paint in progress. it originally came in red 10 years ago. I then painted it with gold accents a few years later. It looked horrible. Now I'm trying to make a sensible coat of paint over it.

I chose to make this gnome for my kids' tooth fairy pillow, because it has a secret pocket in his beard. Perfect size. Purchased pattern here: www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/jumbo-gnome
Today, Sept 21, 2010, Claire lost her first tooth. It was practically falling out of her mouth when I picked her up from day care. At the car I used a small piece of paper towel and squeezed the tooth; it practically came off in my hand. Her eyes got really big and then she started to bleed just a little. She's been very excited all evening and made many phone calls to family to tell everyone.
