I've taken, rather enthusiastically, to using a hatchet and sledgehammer when opening up my butternut squash.
A year ago, just after getting back from an extended stay abroad, I was making supper for the family under severe jet lag. I attempted to open up a butternut squash with a serrated knife, and managed to open up my thumb to the bone, instead. It took months to heal, and has left a rather prominent scar. So I keep the knives away from my thumbs and split the squash like firewood, using the wedge-and-mallet technique, instead.

The tool bit shown is 3/16". I picked up a 3/16" end mill to cut the slot for it, but the tool blank being used is about .002" undersized so it has to be shimmed.
Having the slot centered in the body isn't ideal. You can see I had to grind a big relief in the tool to bring its cutting edge back into line with the center of the tool holder body. I decided to center the slot to retain rigidity in the part of the tool holder that takes most of the cutting force, and that resulted in compromises.
We took a trip to Lowes today to buy some drill bits. The colors on this display caught my eye. 2/11/10
