Well last night was a bit of a disaster:-
Heavy rain and high winds resulted in a "power cut" as I was cooking the evening meal for my 95 year old mother in law.
So out with the torches and the camping stove.
NOW you should NOT put a gas camping stove too close to an electric toaster!
Working by torch light means that only one spot is illuminated at a time, so while retrieving some ingredients (pepper) from the cupboard I noticed an odd yellow flicker out of the corner of my eye. I should have turned round more quickly - but no I got the pepper out of the cupboard before turning round.
Burning plastic is harder to extinguish than I expected.
Oh well it could have been a lot worse.
(I would have expected the plastic on a toaster to be fire resistant).
Stay safe.
One of my fave lunches is a simple avocado toast.

Why does dropped toast always land butter and jam side down? For those interested in how this was made, it is NOT a composite of two images. In fact I've ruined the shot because I created the blurred movement of the toast by rotating the camera up (in the wrong direction) half way through the exposure. The blur effect should move above, not below the toast as it is here. Oh well. The toast itself was propped up on cocktail sticks which were then cloned out.
We had a couple of days away to East Sussex last week (to make up for Greece-gate! 😂) ..the town of Rye is so pretty, all cobbled streets, ancient haunted pubs and cute little tea rooms.
The tea rooms reminded me of all the comforting things about Autumn...toasted tea cakes, crumpets, soup, big pots of tea....yes I know, it's all about food and drink for me!
Photo taken and edited on my phone....I do quite a lot of phone photography and especially like playing around with textures and vintage-style edits without having to get the laptop out, but never think to post any of them here...but as I'm having a lazy rainy day today, here it is!
Wishing everyone a great week ahead :)
Macro Mondays - Bread
Is this the perfect toast?
After my wife left everything seems to have started breaking down: server computer, cordless drill, bike gears and now my toaster.
So I bought a new toaster and happened to find one designed n association with Heston Blumenthal.
It's amazing what difference a toaster can make. This slice is golden from corner to corner, crispy outside, fluffy inside. Perfect!
I promised someone a picture of breakgast, and here it is :). This is for 120 pictures in 2020 #109 "Toast and.....". The toast is 12 grain (mostly whole wheat), the eggs are scrambled with a mix of red and yellow bell peppers, poblano chiles, and onion. It goes without saying that they are seasoned with a bit of crushed red pepper for a daily dose of capsaicen. The sausage is unfortunately store-bought, as I haven't had time since our move to make a batch of homemade. I like to have a bit of fruit as well, in this case a few red grapes.
I guess I should finish up this amazing South Florida
Everglades sunset from last month that was one of the
best sunsets of the year IMHO, with incredibly changing
light and colors from minute to minute. I really enjoyed it
and I do love sharing it with you. Thank you for looking.

Food doesnt really get much better than this.

i've decided to use the countertop oven flic.kr/p/2m3gaso more often. the old microwave packed up a few days ago and has been discarded. that has left valuable space in a small kitchen. i'm not replacing the microwave but i'm giving serious thought to buying a pasta making machine. i'll look around ...

This was actually a mistake, but I liked the effect it made sillouetting the couple toasting by candlelight.

I do not like toast that has had the butter applied when hot because I dislike the texture when it melts, so I have 'hotel' toast, where the toast is cold before the butter is put on.

French toast or English toast?
French toast is a dish made of sliced bread soaked in beaten eggs and typically milk or cream, then pan fried. Alternative names and variants include "eggy bread", "Bombay toast", "gypsy toast" and "poor knights" (of Windsor).
its old and not French:
The earliest known reference to French toast is in the Apicius, a collection of Roman recipes in Latin dating to the 1st century CE, where it is described as simply aliter dulcia 'another sweet dish'. The recipe says to "Break fine white bread, crust removed, into rather large pieces which soak in milk [and beaten eggs] fry in oil, cover with honey and serve".
A 14th-century German recipe uses the name Arme Ritter 'poor knights', a name also used in English and the Nordic languages. Also in the 14th-century, Taillevent presented a recipe for "tostées dorées". Italian 15th-century culinary expert Martino da Como offers a recipe.
