We had a some great weather the other day so I dusted off my camera and drove out to my friends animal sanctuary and nature preserve. As I made my way to the pond at the bottom of the hill, I saw a few little plops into the water. There were loads of toads and they were VERY active this particular morning. They were so busy doing spring toad things that they barely noticed me. I like it when nature cooperates. :)
I think he likes having his picture taken. He has a touch of smile on his lips. (Oh, maybe because he's giving me the finger.)
This is a straight on look at Franz, the spadefoot toad. With Amphibian numbers on the decline worldwide, I was glad to see a whole lotta these creatures hopping around my home and out in the lawn.
This fella stopped the traffic on the Firs Approach Road at Holme Reserve. After he gave me a brief photo opportunity, we moved him onto the grass verge and he doggedly plodded off in a much safer direction.
Check out this Fowler's toad spotted at Port Louisa National Wildlife Refuge in Iowa. These toads can be found in woodlands, prairie and fields. They’ll even burrow to escape the heat!

The common toad is one of the most misunderstood animals of the European fauna. Its stubby appearance, clumsy movements and slimy skin generate an irrational rejection in many people. However, it is one of our most valuable allies in the fight against the annoying nocturnal insects that it hunts and eats anxiously during its long nocturnal runs. This origami model emerged from the search for heads with bulging eyes in the frenzy that follows an AEP Convention. It is simple and at the same time it is a perfect model to fold with a 15x15cm Kami.

Bufo bufo.
The lawn is strewn with hunting toads at night.
A few nights ago Rosie licked one and spent an hour trying to rid her mouth of the disgusting taste, so now she leaves them alone!
These little people are too young to breed yet, and won't reach maturity till they are five or six.

Same toad as posted previously, but different lens/camera combo.

The cane toad (Rhinella marina; formerly Bufo marinus) is an invasive species in Australia. The cane toad is the largest species in the family Bufonidae. Adult cane toads are usually heavy-built and weigh an average of up to 1.8 kg. (4 lbs.). Their size may vary from 10–23 cm.(4–9 in.) and their skin is warty. The coloration on their back and sides may vary from olive-brown or reddish-brown, gray, and yellow while their bellies are semi-yellow or semi-white with darker mottling. Their body is round and flat, has prominent corneal crests, and light middorsal stripes. Their front feet are unwebbed, but their back feet have tough, leathery webbing. Cane toads have short legs and a ridged bony head that extends forward from their eyes to their nose. Behind their ears lies the parotoid gland, which usually causes their head to appear swollen. This gland is used for defense against predators. The parotoid gland produces milky toxic secretion or poison that is dangerous to many species. This poison primarily affects the functioning of the heart. Intoxication is painful, but is usually not fatal for humans. However, it does have some effects, such as burning of the eyes and hands, and skin irritation.

This was one of many Toads I encountered today. He's actually crawling up out of a deep boot print in the mud. It looked like hard work for him! I was drawn by his amazing eyes.

Feeling grumpy in the morning? Cane Toad (Rhinella marina). A South American species, great at controlling beetles that threatened sugar and fruit plantations. Introduced to Australia in 1935 and now hopping across the continent eating anything that they can fit in their mouths. To many Aussie animals a plump toad is a tempting meal, but toxins exuded from special glands on the toad's head often leads to a quick death.
