In spite of saving this toads life at least a couple of dozen times over the course of a summer season he does not look impressed with my efforts. Apparently my porch was the place to be that summer if you were a toad however I had several dogs that made it their quest to catch and not release this dude. He turned the porch into his own personal vacation villa. I found him on several mornings swimming and relaxing in the dogs water bowl. There were a few occasions when I opened my kitchen door to look for him before I put the dogs out and he was sitting staring at my door only about 2 inches away. I swear I could hear him knock sometimes......ha ha. It had a good ending as the dogs were not successful in having toad legs for dinner that entire summer.

Welcome to Toad Hall, the Wind and the Willows is one of the many wonderful garden themes at the Ralph Court Gardens, Bromyard, UK.
I met this lovely lady at Benholm Mill in March last year, and I look forward to seeing the toads out again soon this year.

Ah, the American Toad (Anaxyrus americanus), a symbol of beauty the world over. Known for its gorgeous eyes and killer curves (mostly found on the warts covering its lumpy, dry skin), the toad is one of North America's most plentiful amphibians. And those curves really can be deadly, depending on who you are. The parotoid glands on the back of a toad's head (and other warts, in general) can secrete a milky poison when the little one feels threatened. This secretion has differing effects. If you're an actual predator, it could kill you. If you're a human, it will mostly likely not affect you at all, unless you rub your eyes after holding one ... they might itch or become irritated. One thing is for certain: you won't get warts.

Tricyrtis is a genus of the botanical family Liliaceae (lily family), known in English as Toad Lilies, supposedly because many varieties have purple spotted, orchidlike flowers.
There are 16 different species and about 55 cultivars. Its native range is from the eastern Himalayas to eastern Asia, including China, Japan, Taiwan, and the Philippine Islands.
Toad lilies mainly grows in woods but can also be found in mountainous areas and on cliff sides.
Tricyrtis in general are late summer to late autumn flowering plants whose very exotic starry or bell-shaped flowers (7 to 12 cm) are borne on attractive arching stems, very similar to an orchid and passion flower. These occur in a wide range of forms usually spotted with a contrasting color.

After the many green and brown tones of the last pictures, today there is a bit of blue in the stream to make a change for the eyes. The photo of the common toad after spawning is older, this year I missed the spawning week completely because it took place much earlier due to the warmer weather. The fact that these times shift so much is a (new) difficulty when photographing animals/birds and makes planning shots more difficult when you are away from the location.
This is probably the most beautiful toad I have ever seen. An absolutely gorgeous mix of colour and markings.

Liliaceae
Toad-lilies belong to the genus Tricyrtus and are members of the Liliaceae family. In spite of their tropical appearance, the toad lily is a fully hardy plant and thrives in USDA growing zones 4 to 8.
The flowers of toad lilies have six petals, typically held in an upright position. However, there are some unusual species with pendulous flowers that resemble campanulas in form. The petals and stigmas of toad lilies usually have showy speckles, ranging from red to purple. The flowers are only about the size of a quarter but are numerous. Some say the blooms resemble orchids. In spite of their petite size, toad lily blossoms are an important source of nectar for wildlife. They attract butterflies, and hummingbirds appreciate this late summer source of energy as they prepare to migrate south.
