Richard Wong (C.I.BOYS)

Festive greeting cards and New Year pictures perpetuate popular stereotypes of engraving. In addition to magazines and newspapers, serigraphy is applied to our daily life on a more extensive basis. For example, the patterns printed on clothes, advertising signboards, posters, and even printed circuit boards all benefit substantially from the development of serigraphy.
In the field of contemporary art in Taiwan, traditional engraving is declining and seldom seen in exhibitions due to the increasing diversity of media adopted by contemporary artists and the emergence of digital engraving in recent years. As a sunset medium in the field of contemporary art though, engraving remains a significant landmark medium in contemporary art history. It is therefore necessary to bring engraving back to this field, after which contemporary artists can redefine its uniqueness in today’s art world. The consequence becomes apparent in the exhibition In Print We Trust ─ Artist Silk Screen Print Exhibition organized collaboratively by VT Artsalon, Yo Gallery and Tsubaki Print Studio, through which we attempt to redefine the role of engraving in the world of contemporary art.
This exhibition invites thirteen Taiwanese contemporary artists who are simultaneously the participants of “Taiwan Contemporary Engraving Project.” Utilizing the distinctive qualities of engraving, these artists not only offer refreshing interpretations on this medium, but also create their artworks in novel styles. The drafting, color separation and color correction of these original silk screen prints are done by these artists personally with the assistance from Tsubaki Print Studio. The participating artists include Tzeng Yong-Ning, Richard Wong (C.I.BOYS), Liao Zen-Ping, Kao Ya-Ting, Wang Liang-Yin, Hsu Wei-Ying, Su Meng-Hung, Chen Shiau-Peng, Yao Jui-Chung, Candy Bird, Fan Yang-Tsung, Huang Chun-Yuan and Yang Mao-Lin.
These participating artists are iconic figures in the field of contemporary art in Taiwan. Not only the creative media they specialize in are completely different from engraving, but also the styles of their artworks diverge and bear their respective characteristic signatures. We cannot refrain from speculating as to what kind of artworks these artists are ready to present in this exhibition when they break away from their familiar creative media.
This is Rum and Ting (also called Wray and Ting or Ting with a Sting) is common cocktail found throughout Jamaica. It's two ingredient highball consisting of white overproof jamaican rum and Ting, a popular soda made from Caribbean grapefruit. The "invention" of this cocktail is hard to pinpoint a time, person and place, but Ting was introduced in 1976 and advertising for "Wray & Ting" exists in the early 2000's.
Understanding Rum and Ting as a cocktail is to understand how Jamaicans enjoy jamaican rum. In Jamaican, there are many tiny colorful rum shops where rum is not served mixed up into a drink, but by the bottle (often a 200 milliliter flask) with a cup of ice, fresh lime and Ting (or other fizzy mixers of their choice) leaving the patrons to combine it to their liking. There's an estimated 20,000 of these rum shops, most no bigger than a shipping container. It's a laid-back atmosphere, no pomp or circumstance.
As for the how the drink tastes, overproof jamaican rums have an intense "hogo" or funk from the particular fermentation methods that jamaican rum is known for. This is not a subtle spirit, when combined "quieter" ingredients, these rums shout over everything. It's for this reason that Ting manages to stand up properly to offset this intensity. Much like the carefree way Rum and Ting is consumed, so is the recipe for making it. Measuring can seem overly formal, but for your first time, I would recommend it since these rums are typically 126 proof.
1.5 oz overproof white jamaican rum (see note)
4 oz (approx.) Ting (other grapefruit sodas can substitute, see note)
Add a splash of soda into the bottom of your cup. Add ice gently, then the rum. Top with Ting. Gently stir to combine. Garnish with a lime wedge or wheel.
Note about rum: The three most popular white jamaican rum are Wray & Nephew, Rum-Bar, and Rum Fire which are all recommended.
Note about soda: Ting can be hard to find in the states, so substitutes need to be a bit more tart and bitter and not too sweet to be able to match up effectively. A splash of lime juice can help with this substitution.
